It may not matter, but that's the reasoning. I personally believe the truth lies somewhere in the middle, as usual. The reasoning is not about it taking more energy for a short player to jump high. The reasoning is that short middles and leftsides , including those that jump high, take too long to get over the net when blocking. This matters on the left and for middles because of the faster sets to the positions those players block. I'm not supporting or criticizing the idea here. Just reporting the idea that is commonly encountered especially from those who coach at higher levels of play.

and that's why Jen Mosser has won two National Championships and is having a fantastic year at Select playing against those blue chip taller players.

There are plenty of tall players who are slow to elevate. This is still too black and white for me (absolutely no pun intended).

There are plenty of tall players who are slow to elevate. This is still too black and white for me (absolutely no pun intended). It's not about how fast people elevate. It's about how fast they penetrate the net on the block. Players with long reaches can do this quickly even if they are slow to elevate, or so the story goes. Best of all would be a tall player with long arms who is also quick off the ground. No one claims that all tall players are great at this and that all short players are bad at this. The claim is imply that height (actually reach of course, which is correlated imperfectly with height) is a plus factor once this issue becomes important as it arguably does at higher levels of play.

OK. I get it. I know you aren't pushing this theory, but I'm still not sure I buy it. There are so many other factors involved and reach is only one. I think we're in agreement that players need to be evaluated on many factors, not just height. I still think fatigue would be a bigger factor, but I have no data, obviously, to back this up.

I doubt you'd call these coaches "morons" if you knew who they are. Maybe you don't realize that junior club volleyball isn't a high level of play?

Players come from the club level to play at the college level and from the college level to the professional level. Is that supposed to show something? Thanks for your helpful insights into this discussion.

"High" is a relative term. JO is a higher level than high school. And there are higher and lower levels within JO. College is a higher level still, with higher and lower levels there. All generally speaking.
Why is this even an issue? All other skills being equal, then, yes, you'd prefer the extra 2-3". Thing is, all other skills aren't equal, even at the HIGHEST levels of play.
