SCU beats Pacific in 4. Looks like Pacific will be missing out on the tournament yet again. So sad to see Pacific not making the tournament again after last year.

Fantastic match from Pepperdine. I really enjoyed watching them play tonight. I was so impressed by their excellent defensive positioning. They were so good at making adjustments, and their setter is very good. I was very impressed by them. I think they could be very good next year. I hope they are.
BYU won the match, but it was a dogfight. I don't think they have the consistency at the 2nd outside, opposite, and setting positions to be a force in the tournament, but I hope I'm wrong. I'd love to see all the WCC teams do well this year.

SCU beats Pacific in 4. Looks like Pacific will be missing out on the tournament yet again. So sad to see Pacific not making the tournament again after last year. Pacific was really competitive for 2 sets, and then looked like they totally ran out of steam. Last two set scores were -15 and -10 with a negative hitting percentage for the last set. Santa Clara wound up hitting .337 for the match to Pacific's .157. I would not have anticipated from last season that Pacific would finish the conference 8-10. Hopefully they will rebound next year with some new hitters and Andie Shelton's setting. Kimmy Whitson did a very nice job setting for the team this year, and her lefty offense was very effective. They will return Elman, LaBass and Wilk, which is a nice core group of hitters to have. For Pepperdine, I'm really happy that they were very competitive for 3 out of 4 sets against BYU in their final match. But I am sorry that Becca Strehlow's college career did not pan out the way anyone would have expected. She is an exceptional setter, as well as a standout beach player. I hope she goes on to a professional career. I didn't see the USD - LMU match, but it looked like LMU's middles carried the day. That team has a lot of fight in them. I hope with their 20-something R.P.I., they will get a decent first round matchup and do well in the tournament. In the fourth WCC match, San Francisco beat Saint Mary's 3-1, so SMC ends up with only one conference win for the season (at Pepperdine, early in the season).

As an aside, Alexa Gray recorded 29 kills in 4 sets tonight, putting her season total at 5.16 kills/set, which is now second in the NCAA behind Carnae Dillard, a 5'8 OH from North Texas (??!), and just ahead of Samantha Bricio. She is hitting .300 for the season with 521 kills. She also has 2.41 digs/set. She seems to be one of the hottest hitters in the NCAA right now, and is peaking at the right time. I am really happy for her success and hope that BYU has a very successful run in the tournament, even though opponents will obviously be keying on her. Hopefully some of the other hitters can step up and take some of the pressure off of her. She also seems like a natural 1st or 2nd team AA.

I didn't realize Becca Strehlow was a senior, so I won't get to see her next year. When I was matching up numbers last night I mistakenly thought she was listed as a sophomore. I'm disappointed that will probably be my one and only chance of watching her play. Too bad I didn't start watching women's volleyball again sooner. She is such a joy to watch. She makes it look so easy. I'd still like to see Pepperdine at the top of the league next year.
It's strange how many kills Alexa Gray gets. Watching in person I often will look up and see her numbers and wonder when that happened even though I know she is getting a lot of swings. I thought she struggled somewhat last night, and I think it was mostly due to Pepperdine's excellent defense in the later sets. She did seem a little off though from the very beginning. She is a huge part of their success this year, but I wanted to mention that Ciara Parker was amazing last night as well. She was a huge part of why they won last night. Although I think her passing hasn't been as good as I'd like to see recently, she just seems to get better and better in digging. They are going to really miss both of these players, and BYU would not be where they are right now without both.

Well USD playing NAU in the first round and LMU playing Colorado State in the first round. CSU vs LMU should be interesting....

BYU should do OK until they hit Nebraska who is really looking solid this year. Santa Clara draws Michigan in the first round at UCLA.

Interesting that LMU is being sent north to Stanford (rather than a few miles to UCLA) and Santa Clara is being sent to UCLA instead of 20 miles to Stanford.
