S Santa Clara Sarah Sponcil So. OH Loyola Marymount Becca Strehlow Sr. S Pepperdine Hannah Tedrow Sr. S Loyola Marymount It is interesting to see who is considered most valuable to their team's success. The first team has 7 outsides, 3 setters, 1 opposite, 1 middle and no liberos. The honorable mention team has 2 liberos, 2 middles, one outside, one setter, one opposite. Overall much smaller teams than the B1G or other conferences have. I know there has been some discussion about the liberos being generally left off of first team selections across all conferences. BYU's Ciara Parker and Santa Clara's Danielle Rottman were considered the league's top liberos. Rottman easily led the conference in digs/set, and Parker was known to make some incredible (impossible) digs. The other thing to note is that the pre-season All-WCC team really nailed the picks, except adding BYU's Young-Howard (who had a bit of a down year and was All WCC HM) and omitting San Diego's middles-turned OH's Kramer and Finley, who totally turned that team around after pre-conference play, and Emily Liger, who was the top scorer for surprise-team, Portland.

I am still surprised when they award the defensive player of the year to a middle blocker. Not that they aren't deserving--I just assumed this award would go to a libero. I should be used to it by now, but I guess I'm not. Sometimes I wonder why they don't get just a little more recognition when the awards roll around.

Blocks and digs. One is immediate points and the other gives you chances. One is easy to recruit on a functional level the other is not. Middles have more point scoring value perhaps?

WCC teams in the tournament are 2-0 so far with LMU the 3-1 upset winner over #13 ranked Colorado State. San Diego swept Northern Arizona University. Congratulations to both teams on well-deserved wins!
Tomorrow Santa Clara faces Michigan at 5:30pm Pacific and then BYU faces Ohio at 6pm Pacific. Go Broncos and Cougars!

Glad to see that the WCC is already doing better this year than last year. I believe BYU was the only WCC team to advance out of the first round last year, and this year we already have two!
USD is facing USC tomorrow, and will probably lose to USC, but hey, you never know what can happen in the tournament. If USD happens to upset USC then they would be playing at home for their next match which is pretty cool, but USC will probably win.
LMU will be facing Stanford, and on paper Stanford is the clear favorite. I think LMU upsetting Stanford is more likely than USD upsetting USC, but it still an extremely difficult task for LMU. LMU is very undersized compared to Stanford, but I think they can utilize their speed to their advantage to have a fighting chance at competing with Stanford.
I think BYU beats Ohio. BYU is great at home, and plus Alexa Gray is peaking at the right time right now.
Michigan vs. Santa Clara will be a good match. SCU could come out with a win.

LMU sweeps Stanford!!!!!!!! They are headed to the sweet 16 and I believe they will be playing Kansas in the regional semi finals in San Diego. Sarah Sponcil had 15 kills and 10 digs for a double double. She made some really smart plays tonight in the from row. Tedrow also ran a very nice offense tonight and Suaava also played really well. Jamie Lea made some errors, but she still played her part and contributed to the win tonight. I thought Stanford for sure had the advantage in the front row, but LMU definitely held their own against the Cardinal.
I think that this was also the highest ranked opponent that LMU has ever beaten in school history, but I'm not exactly sure. Anyways, congratulations to the Lions and can't wait to see them play Kansas next weekend!

Huge props to LMU for the sweep over Stanford! They may be small, but they play a very smart and scrappy style of volleyball. Good luck against Kansas next weekend. BYU won in 4 sets over Ohio tonight to advance to the second round against Western Kentucky tomorrow. Santa Clara lost in 4 to Michigan at UCLA tonight, and San Diego was swept by # 1 USC in the second round. But overall, a great showing by the WCC so far.
