The first day is usually pretty boring with everyone holding their seeds. The two top teams in each pool ought to both be 2-0 going into the last match fighting for the top seed in the pool. Anyone see any matchups worth watching? Hawaii Elite vs. High Line, Seaside vs. Pace, and SCVC vs. Coastal all strike me as games in which the seeds could flip. What about Balboa vs Sports Performance 18-1 or Ultimate vs Diablo? Those are also likely upsets.

Last year in 18s only one top seed lost: Ultimate's second team beat SCVC's first team to take the 8th seed. First 7 courts all held.

Those are also likely upsets. Diablo and Ultimate could flip also, but I would expect Ultimate to win. I haven't seen SPRI Mizuno play, but know they finished well at the Invitational and have done very well at Qualifiers. Balboa has a tough draw all the way through.

Balboa is going to put everything they got into that match. The #3 seed is a nice place to be, across from HBC till the finals. Pac Rim will be a buzz saw as well, but you can't avoid both. 3 is the spot.

Anyone see any matchups worth watching? I would be very surprised if everyone keeps their seed, especially on the first day. Teams flying in the night before and having to play at 8 am the next morning can be rudely awakened by a team that is mentally and physically ready to play. yeah it's a shame all those west coast teams have to wake up at 3am PST to get to the gym.

16's have started and upsets have begun! Three 1's (Vaqueros (6), NCVC (7) and SMBC (8)) and a 2 (Eden (12)) have lost their opening matches.

I like to see that but there's forgiveness on the first day with challenge matches. It's the second day that makes any misstep catastrophic.

Going out on a limb and making some predictions for 15s
Potential upsets in Round 1 in 15s I would see Pali 15 beating Durham 15 and taking the 5 seed. I could see MVC 15 being vulnerable of losing its 6th seed in the first round.
Pool 4 of round 3 in the 15s should be interesting.
It will likely include HBC 15 (4 seed) playing either Vaqueros(3 seed) (if they lose their seed in round 2 to loser of SASVBC and 949 in first round), 949 (if they finish 2nd to SASVBC in first round and 2nd to Vaqueros in second round), or SASVBC (if they finish 2nd in first round and second to Vaqueros in 2nd round). I haven't seen Vaqueros live so this is a guess but I guess it will be HBC and Vaqueros as top 2 seeds (4 and 9) in that pool.
Assuming 949 or SASVBC finishes 1st in the 2nd round of pool 3 i.e. beats Vaqueros, that would mean that MB Surf would likely play either HBC or Vaqueros or other team that earns the 7th seed spot in the quarterfinals of the gold bracket. In other words, MB Surf will imo end up playing the 2nd place team in that pool. I haven't looked at the permutations of the 7th seed spot but think either team would be able to be able to beat any team holding the 7th seed spot at that point since HBC and Vaqueros are seeds 3 and 4.

No results in AES yet? As of 10:15, I'm not seeing scores from any of the 16 or 14 morning pools.

Must have been your computer; we were seeing updates at 8:15 or so as first matches were being completed. Vanguard 16's obviously way under seeded as they go from #28 seed to #9, knocking MVC 16's out of Gold today.

They then went 1-1 (losing to Blast, who went 0-3 today) in their challenge pool and had to win a 1 set match just to sneak back into Gold contention.

I haven't looked at whether it's be logistically possible to avoid that but my guess is if the challenge pool "played to seed" it wouldn't have happened but Vanguard may have "upset" someone in that pool to get back into it.

12 teams left eligible for the gold bracket in 16s
The top 4 seeded teams have kept their seeds
Pool 1 Balboa (1) - started as seed 1 NCVC (7) - started as seed 7 Vanguard (9) - started as seed 28
Pool 2 Boriquen (2) - started as seed 2 Hitman (8) - started as seed 5 MB Surf (10) - started as seed 10
Pool 3 Spectrum (3) - started as seed 3 SMBC (5) - started as seed 8 Torrimar (11) - started as seed 11
Pool 4 Roch Pacbootleggr (4) - started as seed 4 A'o a Koa (5) - started as seed 18 Vaqueros (12) - started as seed 6
All but 2 of the top 12 seeds made it to the final 12.

Half of the top seeds in their 15s pools struggled some in the first matches in the 15s. Probably a case of nerves with the first match.
Torrimar (1) won in 3 HBC (4) won in 3 - third game 27-25 Durham (5) won in 3 MVC (6) lost in 3
