I pieced together the dates for the major boys vball tournaments this fall. I saw two dates for Middleton, so not sure if they host two tournaments. Sept 5 - Kettle Moraine, South Milwaukee Sept 12 - Racine Park, New Berlin Sept 19 - Tosa East, Germantown, Waukesha North Sept 26 - Kaukauna, Westosha Central Oct 3 - Middleton, Kenosha Indian Trail, Shorewood Oct 10 - Whitefish Bay Oct 17 - Middleton, Kenosha Tremper Oct 24 - Homestead If I'm not mistaken, this is the first time New Berlin is hosting a tournament ... and it's during the big Racine Invite. Interesting ...

Before the high school season gets started in a few weeks, we'd like to wish good luck to all of the athletes who are participating in the Badger Region High Performance team that will head to the HP Championships July 21-25 in Des Moines, Iowa. This year's team made up of athletes born after Jan. 1, 1997, will compete in the Boys National Division.
The team includes:
* Nick Davies (Lake Country VBC/Kettle Moraine HS) * Nick Watry (Milwaukee Volleyball Club/Brookfield East HS) * Zach Engsberg (Milwaukee Volleyball Club/Catholic Memorial HS) * Zach Schmidt (Wisconsin Volleyball Academy/Kaukauna HS) * Alex Shebesta (Milwaukee Volleyball Club/Germantown HS) * Jacob Christensen (Southport VBC/Kenosha Bradford HS) * Nick Malak (Milwaukee Sting/Kettle Moraine HS) * Will McNabb (Milwaukee Sting/Marquette HS) * Stephen Seaman (Southwest VBC/Muskego HS) * Dieter Ripperger (Comets/Cedarburg HS) * Scott MacGillis — injured (Milwaukee Volleyball Club/Wauwatosa West HS)
The team is coached by Chris Brandt (Lakeland College), Tom Pangborn (Southwest VBC) and Mike Ziegler (Capital Volleyball Academy).
Good luck, fellas!
Brian Sharkey (Badger Region Program Director/Kenosha Indian Trail High School)

Racine: Greendale, Greenfield, Shorewood, Beloit Memorial, Brookfield Central, Cedarburg, Fond du Lac, Homestead, Kenosha Bradford, Kenosha Tremper, Madison East, Madison La Follette, Madison West, Mukwonago, Oak Creek, Racine Case, Racine Horlick, Racine Park Racine Saint Catherine's, Waukesha North, Waukesha South, Waukesha West, West Allis Central, West Allis Nathan Hale, Middleton, Union Grove, Wilmot Union, Fort Atkinson, Pius XI, Indian Trail & Academy, Westosha Central New Berlin: Wauwatosa West, Brookfield East, Catholic Memorial, Franklin, Germantown, Kettle Moraine, Muskego, New Berlin, Nicolet, Wauwatosa East, Kaukauna, Marquette, Arrowhead, Kimberly, Appleton North, Appleton West On the surface, looks like New Berlin was able to pull the majority of the strong teams away from Racine.

VERY interesting. This is one of the biggest shakeups on the boys side in awhile. The Racine Invite has been THE tourney of the season. Now clearly they have not lost almost all the top 15 programs in the state. It appears something happened that got teams to switch out. Any coaches want to give details please?

There were a few factors that came into play, some more important than others. In no particular order. 1. Cooler fees for team to bring in their own food. 2. Quality of game being played (games to 19 only 1 timeout early in the season does not help teach the game to young players - Along with importance of the tournament you might not be able to risk using a player to "learn" in such a short game when every point seemed to matter at this tournament) 3. Length of day vs amount of down time sitting around waiting to play 4. Injury concerns (teams playing in the pit in back, was not a safe floor to play on) 5. Lack of seeding in the tournament, where 3 or 4 teams who everyone knew would be good were placed in same pool etc. 6. Change of pace, New Berlin has been trying to get a tournament going for a couple years now and this year seemed like a good year for them to try it out.
I always schedule my guys as tough as possible to challenge them. When I saw all those teams who I thought would be good this coming season on paper were leaving and I got invited I jumped at the chance to play the best teams possible. I am glad Racine was able to fill the tournament and now almost every team in the state will be playing that day.

When are the preseason rankings released? There are none as far as I know. Coaches start voting in their poll after a couple weeks into the season I believe.

With the Fox Valley teams being a factor all season (the Journal pre season rankings doesn't include Fox Valley) who are people liking to win the Fox Valley? With the heavy hitters from the Fox Valley coming down for the New Berlin tournament it will be interesting to see who gets the early season advantage.

My best guess is Appleton North, Kaukauna, Kimberly in that order. From what I saw in club ball, there was mostly North players so that is why I put them #1. Plus, Kaukauna lost Belling. Truthfully, I don't really know though as I mostly know about SE WI.

Why is the highschool season in the fall compared to the spring? Not sure the reasoning, but it has been that way since the WIAA started sponsoring the sport again in 2000. There have been votes to switch it to Spring, however, very few schools wanted to see a change.
