Why is the highschool season in the fall compared to the spring? Not sure the reasoning, but it has been that way since the WIAA started sponsoring the sport again in 2000. There have been votes to switch it to Spring, however, very few schools wanted to see a change. Boys Volleyball started in Wisconsin in 1947. Then it was a spring sport. Stayed that way until 1967. During 1967 they played both a spring and then fall season. It has stayed a fall season since 1967. WIAA sponsored boys volleyball until 1982. Then numbers dropped to 28 schools sponsoring the sport and it became a club sport. From 1983-1999 schools still had volleyball and played. Coaches ran their own state tournament. At one point it was a 16 team tournament and then evolved to an 8 team tournament. In 2000, we were up to 38 teams sponsoring the sport and the WIAA came back in as recognizing the sport. A couple things to note about fall vs. spring: 1) Yes there have been votes to move the season but not everyone participates in the votes and it's no where near a majority that wants a change but there are definitely schools that are interested. 2) WIAA has been talking about moving summer baseball to the spring for everyone long before moving volleyball to spring. You cannot move two sports to the spring at the same time. That will destroy participation numbers in either volleyball or baseball. 3) If boys volleyball does move to spring, that leaves 3 WIAA sports for the fall for boys - Football, Soccer, Cross Country. And it would put up to 6 sports in the spring for boys - Golf, Baseball, Tennis, Track & Field are sponsored and Lacrosse is close to being added to the WIAA. With the recent concerns with concussions, the idea of having only 1 non-contact sport in fall is not going to go over well with many. 4) Timing is something that no one is comfortable tackling right now because if you move to Spring, you have to figure out the scheduling issues - both regular season and post-season with contracts in place for State tournament venue as well as officials. 5) While Milwaukee area might not have any issues with officials by moving the season to spring, many volleyball officials in other parts of the state are also Spring umps, refs or officials for other sports. Now, having said all of that, it is very easy to make a case to move to spring. It may happen some day, but I would say it would take some time and there needs to be an overwhelming majority. Glad to see people are interested in WI volleyball again this off-season. Love to read about players and teams. Only way to promote the sport is to be your own advocate. List players and teams to watch or top 10 lists, but keep it positive. We are all in the same small boat together. No need to throw anyone overboard. Coach White Middleton

Thanks for the background of the sport in the WIAA. Interesting stuff. The mention of having played both a fall and spring season in 1967 gave me a random thought that I am guessing probably would not work, but would be fun and interesting if it did. With almost the entire rest of the country playing their high school season in spring, people who are involved in the club side of the game in Wisconsin know that it leads to a bit of a dead period. Some teams/clubs give their teams a 2 week break around Easter, there are limited local tournaments (Southport does a good job putting on their tournament, I believe Center Court hosts a tournament, but there aren't many other options out there for the club teams).
With that down time, would there be a chance to do something similar to what both the men's and women's college volleyball seasons do, organizing a couple of tournaments during their offseason? NCAA Women's teams play a very shortened season schedule with their freshmen-juniors the spring following the fall season, and NCAA Men's teams play in a tournament or 2 in the spring leading into their fall season. I know Brad puts on a few tournaments at Nicolet between the end of Nationals and high school tryouts. Could there be a few tournaments with a school's freshmen-juniors during the club dead time in maybe April or May?
Just a random thought that could be fun to do.

Just learned that West Allis Central will NOT be sponsoring a team at the varsity level this year. JV only is what I was told.
I do see the Union Grove and Oak Creek are both new to the WIAA tournament series.

Union Grove is coached by Dan Dresen, a Racine native who went to Quincy University and works closely with Wisconsin Juniors. UG participated in the Southeast Conference last year but is now WIAA Tournament eligible this year for the first time. Oak Creek will also play in the Southeast Conference and is going to be coached by Justin Flasch.

Wow, very cool. None of us had seen that article or heard Donald was honored by Volleyball Mag before, thanks for sharing. Big congrats to both of them, both very deserving and both great kids. News to me, he even grew a few inches!

New Berlin at Marquette on 9/2 Fun to kick off this year with a rematch of last year's state title match. New Berlin will be much the same team as a year ago with a number of returning payers (Farrell, Zeske, Campbell, Kraninger), but MUHS will be a very different team with most of last year's starters having been seniors. Marquette will have a lot of talent but will be young and relatively inexperienced at the varsity level. They will improve as the year progresses, but it may be a rocky start to the season for them.

This will be very entertaining. Let's remember though, Brookfield East was the clear front runner last year and didn't make it out of Sectionals. Not saying that will happen to New Berlin, but many things can happen between now and November (injuries, complacency, etc.).

What are the big non conference matchups this year? Any you will check out? KM at Marquette, Septemeber 16. This should be a big early season matchup between a really talented team that could win State, and then there is Marquette too.
