Just saw Summer/Carico demolish a Chinese team in the first round. One of the players playing for China is Xinyi Xia, who just a year ago was considered the "next big thing" in Chinese volleyball. Her federation paired her up with Xue, who was arguably the best player in the world at the time. They were pretty solid, and actually won a couple of Opens, but Xia clearly seemed over her head. Fast forward a year, and she's toiling in the qualifier as the 25th seed...and frankly, she looked terrible. Zero confidence. And she's still only 18. Maybe she learns and improves, but I wonder if it was just too much too soon.
Next up for Carico/Ross are an old nemesis of Summer's from junior world championship days, Bonnerova/Hermannova.

Since many of those U.S. teams have zero FIVB points, how did they decide which ones got in and where to seed them in the quali? All the men's teams entered in the Q have at least minimal FIVB points. Women's Q still didn't completely fill (one spot left) so it was a non-issue, but only one team had 0 FIVB points anyway.

Okay thanks. The teams must have been added so late that the FIVB didn't record their points on their website, since it shows no points for a bunch of the U.S. teams.

Does anyone know if this is being streamed? Doesn't look like laola1.tv is covering this one either... Quarters onward will be streamed. I'll have the link up on my site when the time comes. Cam is there a reason more Canadian teams didnt try to get in? Wouldnt this be an easy trip for you guys? We don't really have many more teams that could compete at this level. I think it overlaps with some beach national events up here for our younger players... but they probably wouldn't be the type of teams to come down to this anyways.

Those FIVB pages have a link to Live Scoring. Helps a little!
EDIT: Updates like the seven year itch.......not so helpful after all.

Great spacing of teams in pool play, not a single double up of USA teams, men or women.

Great spacing of teams in pool play, not a single double up of USA teams, men or women. As pointed out in the St. Pete thread, this is by design. Home country seeds are adjusted to avoid duplicates in pool play. Specifically Hyden/Bourne were pushed down a few seeds and Doherty/Mayer were also bumped down a seed to avoid two US teams in certain pools.

Anybody understand why the Salgado sisters who lost in the quali are in the main draw? Assume that a main draw team dropped out.

I was wondering the same thing about the Salgado sisters. Maybe lucky losers?

Is there any live feed for pool play? Even Periscope would suffice
