I'd like to see Granato at Libero, she needs to be on the court!!! I actually like this idea and had been thinking about this one a lot in the off season. Either this or try Gianna in there and lets roll! Dave if you read this forum please please listen to me... Granato will be the difference maker, without her Hawaii is a solid team, with her as Libero Hawaii is a great team...

Maybe Shoji should have said that the other defensive specialists are close to nabbing the libero spot instead of saying that Kahakai is the libero without question and that the other three are competing for the serving sub role. That might have pushed Kahakai a bit more. She was just letting balls drop around her. That was disappointing. Guinasso and Ponce didn't even play.

i liked what I saw last night...mostly. Higgins looks great, better than last year. Magill and Taylor are lock ins. Maglio and Greeley compliment that. I'm impressed with Greeley. She's prob been in the weight room, hit some heavy balls. I was excited to see mitchem in action. can't wait to see granato hit. Koelch is always a nice spark. I saw a glimpse of hope for 2015. I'll keep it positive because I know how it is to be ragged on for bringing your B game to an "A" group of players. All of these players I mentioned I feel really brought it last night.

Both Maglio and Kahakai underperformed tonight. Kahakai just wasn't getting to the ball and Maglio was hitting the ball when she was already under or even in front of it. They both are capable of playing so much better. On the plus side the connection between Higgins and Maglio looks better than it was last year. As far as putting Huff into play tonight, I'm very excited to see how much she's improved but she's playing behind Taylor who was the only real bright spot offensively tonight for the Wahine. Why would you pull Taylor just to see how Huff would play when there was very real danger of the Wahine losing both the second and third sets? I'm very disappointed with the way the Wahine played tonight. Once again they're serve receive hobbled them. This team has players at every hitting position that can do some major damage offensively but it's all going to depend on how well they can pass and set the ball. spot on but did you mean magil instead of maglio in terms of connection?

I would really like to hear Jeff Hall's opinion on things. On the other hand, I suppose he'll just give the party line because it'll be stupid to question your head coach in public. That would be suicide. Okay, I guess I just convinced myself that I don't want to hear what Jeff Hall has to say.

yes, taylor on the left, huff on the right. higgins as the starter while kendra cleans up and bails us out doesn't make sense to me. unlike other posters i see no great changes at passing/setting since last year. middles still not getting enough sets. shows that height and size and taylor can bail us out with teams like idaho but bigger competition awaits. we've been gassed on too much pre-season hype... (just an opinion, don't shoot me).

just watched the recording of the match.
taylor. wow. what a way to start the season. and the serve is a nice addition to the arsenal.
magill is getting the higher sets now. let's hope higgins can keep feeding them to her. during the tighter moments of the match, higgins sometimes reverted to the lower sets to the middle, but overall so far, the setting looks improved. but let's see more!
kahakai looked nervous out there. surprising since she got a lot of playing time last year. but i guess starting is a whole different animal. let's hope she finds a way to calm her nerves, b/c it's not a good thing for opposing teams to be targeting your libero.
greeley had a quiet night, but she passed well, and hit at a great .350+ clip.
olevao also a quiet night. she hit about .260 (which is great for her!). but you can see the offense is going to run through the right side and middle this year ... which is how it should be, b/c that's where the strength of the offense lies.
the other middle position will work itself out, between maglio and mitchem. neither really showed enough to claim the spot completely. and i wouldn't have expected that after just one match into the season.
idaho -- give them credit. they're a scrappy team. they pass surprisingly well for their youth, have some good servers, and threw a lot of backyard ball at the wahine, a lot of dinks and offspeed. hawaii needs to tighten the defense on those. here's hoping idaho goes on to make some noise in the big sky, to help hawaii's RPI.

This wasn't the first time Kahakai played libero. She started ahead of Sarah Mendoza in some sets and, if I recall correctly, in some matches later in the season. The result was that Kahakai wasn't an improvement.
I would like to know how the three DS's are even, per Shoji. Do they have an objective scoring system or are the coaches basically judging them through the "eye ball" test? Having said that, I thought Clare Anderson did a nice job -- at least serving. I don't quite remember how she did passing or digging.

I've watched the replay and I was watching all of last years matches prior to the season starting. The one thing I get disappointed at is Higgins reaction to a mistake she makes...she makes these expressions like she's"pissed off".
Grant it part is due to the passing but as the setter, I feel she should turn around to her teammates and be like"my bad" or "it's okay, we got this"....but watching her reaction the message I get is ""f*k, can't we just do it right".
I watched a few 2004-2006 matches and Kamana'o would turn, smile and knod her head to her teammates as if to say "no worries...we got this"...I don't get that from Higgins.
I know I'm probably wrong, but if I made a bad pass and seen her reaction, I'd respond with " bitch you ain't better"....
Okay...just my rant on Higgins

Nikki Taylor had 8 digs while the libero Kahakai had only 6 the whole match. In contrast, Granato had 3 digs in very limited playing time. I'm still puzzled by Huff's absence. i do agree with others that kahakai had a shaky night. hopefully it was just nerves that she can overcome with more playing time. as far as digs, i think you also gotta figure that idaho was not a left side dominated hitting team. kahakai plays left back, lined up against the OH cross court shot of the opposing team. but idaho really spread their offense around pin to pin, and even runs an unorthodox play, like the left back defender hitting out of the back row from that position, which tended to be a line shot.

Okay...just my rant on Higgins I thought I was the only one noticing the bad body language and facial expressions... Really not conducive to a leadership position on the team. Maybe theres a lot of pressure on her with kendra in the wings.. but this is something IMO needs to change for the sake of team synergy.

Its just the first match of the season. Kahakai is very slow to react to the ball. I'm still not sold on Tai Manu Olevao. It looks like Taylor and Magill will carry this team on their shoulders this season.
