The secular only is certainly a good rule. Universities are for advancement in education and research, not praying.
I always though the "issue" with BYU wasn't simply that it was religious, but because that particular religion forbade playing on Sunday, which creates quite the scheduling hassle for many sports. If it was simply an LDS school with no playing prohibitions, I don't think the religious nature of the school would matter.
I surely don't intend to get into a policy debate about the role of religious institutions of higher education. I will wholeheartedly agree that there are plenty of great institutions that have religious affiliation. And yes non religious people go to them. But, IMO, the fact that they are religious has very little to do with why they are a great institution of higher learning. The religion thing is just a distraction. IMO, Let people be religious, I see little reason why institutions of higher learning need to be. Just creates extra rules and observations for completely irrational reasons, which is antithetical to higher learning.
