The BIG is the best league in the country. Look at the setters....in any other league, Seliger Swenson is the all league setter easily. If you like Nelson, over Rolfzen, no debate here at all. I think you could choose Washington, Nelson, A Rolfzen, or H Tapp and be totally justified. There is a lot of talent out there. No question ... I wouldn't be surprised to see four B1G teams in the FF (if the committee splits up the top teams to make it a possibility). I think (and this is just my gut) that they will seed Minnesota and Nebraska both into Des Moines. I hope I'm wrong because they're both deserving of Final Four seeds. But with USC, Texas, Washington, and these two, that's 5 teams and 4 spots. Unless Penn State suddenly catches fire or Purdue gets on a run, I think it's two at best in the final four.

Coach- Sheff POY-Carlini SOY-Carlini DPOY-Carlini FOY- SSS No Tionna Williams for FOY?? She's great and will be on the all freshman team, but SSS has basically led a team who was below 500 last year to the B1G championship. It's hard to argue with those credentials.

Since we're at it, for the all freshman team:
Seliger Swenson Poulter Williams Foecke Appold Bastianelli Skojt
You could put Weiskircher on here too, and I wouldn't object.

If you ask me, Taylor Hughes for OSU has had a better influence on her team than either Weiskircher or Poulter. Sounds radical given all the preseason discussions, but I think its true.

That's why this is fun....4 of the top 6 teams started freshmen setters this year. So someone is likely getting left out of the top 7.

It's between Carlini and Santana. I can't see giving the POY to the 3rd place team's setter, no matter how good she is. There's an awfully thin line between 1st and 3rd this year--like that 5th set in Madison going the Badgers' way instead of the Gophers'. If the question is, which player played the best, you can certainly make the case for the setter who paced her team to a PSU (of old) type dominance over the last 12 matches (36-4 in sets). But to the victor belong the spoils, and Santana. as the heart and soul of the big10 champions, will be the POY.

And yet Courtney is probably the 2nd best player in the league, behind Carlini -- and that's apples and oranges. Amazing year for Santana. No reason to give both awards to Carlini, especially since Wisconsin finished 3rd. I have no problem with Santana as POY But i would say SSS is more valueable to gopher team. Gophers win more games with SSS setting, Goehner and Wilhite hitting vs Schau Setting, Santana and Wilhite hitting. Wasn't this same gopher team .500 in big ten last year...and the really only change is SSS setting? Reminds me of the 1996 AL MVP. Alex Rodriguez just barely lost to Juan Gonzalez. Turns out ARod would have won if not for a Seattle voter putting Ken Griffey Jr. #1 (on the argument that while ARod had a better year than Juan Gone, he wasn't actually the most valuable player on his own team). Griffey finished fourth, and the split between the two Mariners ended up leaving Gonzalez as the MVP.

I agree with the following:
POY: Santana / LC - I think Santana gets it and it's maybe possibly a shared award, but no way LC gets it solo because of how Minny finished.
SOY: This one goes to LC, no question. She leads in all the setter stats.
DPOY: J-WO. Also no question.
FOY: SSS. No other freshman has made such an impact on her team. I called it this summer when I said that SSS was in a unique position to elevate her entire team. She delivered.
COY: Hugh
Someone had asked: The player awards are chosen by the coaches. The coach of the year is chosen by the media.
All freshman team usually has, what, eight?

What media? Must be the only volleyball coverage they do all year.
