I had the same thought. If Stanford beats USC, I could see NPOY going to Bugg depending on the other 3 teams in the Final Four. I can't see Bugg getting it over Carlini or Santana. Or even Amy Neal or Nikki Taylor. Amy Neal?! Come on now...

I had the same thought. If Stanford beats USC, I could see NPOY going to Bugg depending on the other 3 teams in the Final Four. For Bugg to be in any serious consideration for NPOY, Stanford would have to make it to the championship match, and Bugg would have to play really well all tournament. Bricio, Santana and Carlini would all also have to get knocked out early. Bugg has a better shot at tournament most outstanding player if Stanford makes it deep and she plays well. I think Bricio is enough of a front runner to where if USC makes it at least to the regional final and Bricio plays well she has a good shot. If, however, Carlini or Santana carry their team to a Final Four or beyond one of them could possibly take it from Bricio. That's fair, but don't the votes get placed before the semi-final? The Bricio point is fair as I think she is the front runner, but I also think how great Klineman was in 2010 and how Lloyd came out of no where, made the Final 4, and she was named NPOY. All I'm saying is, let's say Stanford, Texas, Nebraska, and Penn State make the final four (not my prediction, but for argument sake). Bugg is the front runner in those four teams. No doubt about it. Nebraska is very balanced with no real stand out, no way Neal gets it over her, and I love Courtney, but she's been up and down this year.

I believe you are right about the voting being typically before the semi-final. My mistake. If those four teams made it to the final four, I think, assuming USC was knocked out in a regional final, Bricio may very well still get it. As you said there's no real stand-out NPOY on Texas, Nebraska, and Penn State. And I don't see Bugg getting it just because Stanford made it one round further than USC in the tournament. I stand by my belief that if Bricio makes it to a regional final she gets it, unless - and only unless - Carlini, or Santana, or possibly Sybeldon make it to the final four.

Creighton's facility holds more than Kansas and they draw more than other teams that are hosting. Somebody goofed. Kansas plays NCAA tournament matches in 16,000 seat Allen Fieldhouse, not their 1,300 seat gym. Creighton's volleyball-specific arena seats 2,500 comfortably although they can cram a few more in and stay within code. But I don't think size had anything to do with it. This city has 5 arenas of 3,000+ and the school would have surely rented one if size was the issue. Heck, they already hosted Nebraska in one of them this season and drew 10,000+. I think the athletic department simply dropped the ball thinking there was no way the RPI would go so high. I spoke with coach Bechard last week and he planned to host in the smaller gym.

You could substitute a couple of other names in Carlini/Santana's place, like Sybeldon, for example.

The #1 seed should have the easiest path to the Final Four, and I think they do. I could see Kansas beating Stanford. Kansas is a very aggressive serving team; they go for it. Yes, they make a lot of serving errors, but they don't get passive with their serving. If Stanford can receive serve and set Merete, then they can neutralize KU somewhat. KU sets RS Kelsey Payne all across the net; when opponents focus on Payne, that opens up things for their other hitters. Still, KU getting to the regional would be a first for them, I believe. So, the experience (in every way) is with the Cardinal. I'd say Stanford is pretty solid on serve receive. Burgess and McKenna are definitely above average passers. Howard is perhaps the worst of the big 3 passers, but she's still above average IMO. Stanford will use Hodson if one of their 3 "go-to" passers is having trouble or facing a tough jump server (in which case they deploy 4 passers). Any team bringing heat on a top spin serve will most likely be disappointed because Stanford has a very good track record passing those type of serves. It would be tough floaters, like the one Hodson deploys that would give Stanford the most problems. Stanford, as mentioned above, with the addition of Hodson, has a pretty good serve game as well. Bugg, who was Stanford's best server last year, is now using a deep floater that is very effective. Burgess is the weak link as she tends to serve lollipops. I have been a HUGE critic of Burgess's serve this season. I thought it was big mistake to even have her serving. Yes, lollipops all year. However, these past two matches, she has been serving much better. Her float serves have movement, and not so much arc. I don't know what happened to Benjamin--it seems Dunning lost confidence in her. Stanford's serve is doing well. The only problem, is they don't serve as well on the road.

Looking at tickets in San Diego...I could only find general admission. Is it one size fits all? Early bird gets the worm? Anyone know?

USC's road to the Elite 8 is like a walk in the park. Not to take anything away from UNC or Creighton, but I don't see those team beating USC at San Diego.
Stanford's road, meanwhile, will be tough. NMSU is good but I think Stanford will be able to handle them. However, either of Colorado State or LMU can upset Stanford. Just I am thinking Stanford is tough at Maples so I have enough confidence on them.
Looking forward to a Stanford-Kansas match. How good is Kansas? Havili just won the Big12 SOY. And Payton vs Howard in the Opp.
Let the games begin!

Bugg isn't even the best player on her own team...come on now I have, and she's definitely the most complete player on the top team in the Big12. Put her in the Pac12 or Big10 and she isn't even all conference. Could you say the same about Bugg? Comparing them based on "who's the best player on their respective teams" isn't really a fair argument when you have the wealth of talent that Stanford does.
