Does anyone know what happened to PSU this season? It seems about midway through the big10 they fell off. They're defense isn't where it used to be. Setting seemed to be an issue for some of them.... but they just haven't been the team they started off being. They even lacked fire this year. Just wondering what happened to them.......

I haven't seen Penn State play in a couple of weeks. The passing was bad, but I expected that from what I have read here. I was surprised by a couple of things:
How slow their floor defense is. Seemed like they were all surprised every time the ball was hit, and didn't make a move until the ball hit the ground. Pierce was better than most but still slow.
How Hawaii dominated the net play. I'm used to seeing the PSU front line jump higher than everyone else. But Hawaii touched many, many balls PSU hit, making for easy digs, and Hawaii seemed to hit over the PSU block with ease.

And through the block with ease. Penn State couldn't close the block much of the night. Credit good passing and serve receive which kept Hawaii in system much of the night.

On match-by-match level, I would rank hawaii's performances this season as follows:
1. Florida - a lot of players stepped up from Taylor to Higgins to Koelsch to TMO to Kahakai to Greeley to Maglio. And the crowd was amazing!
2. Texas A&M - you could see the confidence of the Wahine players oozing onto the court and conversely, the steadily decreasing confidence of the Texas A&M players as they tried to not get blown out. Kahakai was particularly demoralizing to the Texas A&M offense.
3. Penn State - an almost perfect hitting night for all the hitters. The Wahine touched a lot of balls at the net, dug up heavy balls, and provided the best (almost lucky) coverage I've seen in years. The boring 3rd set - mostly because of the uninspired play by Penn State - drops this to 3rd on the list.
4. Long Beach State I - Come from behind victory. I thought this was going to be a loss.
5. Wichita State
6. American - an otherwise good team had their arses handed to them

Hawaii played outstanding, Magill was awesome.
still, as good as Penn State was, I though Penn State did not play 'fast' and routinely allowed Hawaii time to set up their defense. not gonna beat Hawaii setting moon balls, with Hawaii's block.
now we'll see how they handle a 'quicker' pace.
if Higgins plays like she did against Penn State, Hawaii will do just fine

Higgins played like an All-American last night. This is someone who didn't make all-conference.

Pretty accurate assessment. Had trouble closing out games at end of season. 2nd set last night was a perfect example. 25-24 lead became 27-25 loss. They came out in the second half playing like they already knew they'd been beaten. Russ tinkered with the lineup constantly toward the end of the year, and right up to last night. Never could find the magic. Setting was too predictable, floor defense average, blocking was porous, and team never gelled as a unit. Doesn't look great for next year, either. Let's see how Russ changes things. This reminds me of the end of the John Wooden era at UCLA. Doubt any team will ever have the run Penn State had the last 8 seasons. Parity everywhere, new, dynamic coaches are changing the culture of their schools (like at Wisconsin), too many great high school athletes entering the college ranks, which means the NC will probably have a different winner every year for years to come.

Higgins played like an All-American last night. This is someone who didn't make all-conference. 2 players who got a lot of criticism from fans all season, and the past couple seasons .... higgins and olevao .... came up big last night! Higgins set such a balanced offense ... And i don't think penn st was expecting that kind of a performance from Olevao last night ...

I am thinking, the NCAA Selection Committee will go back to giving PSU patsy opponents until the Regional Final. Cause when PSU does not have walk over opponents they cannot even reach the Regional Final. Enough Said. REALLY?
