We could start a coaches-who-married-their players thread, but that could get really ugly.

I love Volleyball, really do. To me it is the absolute best showcase for female athleticism in team sports. So when I say this, I am not trying to hurt the sport.
Youth Sports all too often is the bastion for predators and profiteers, who disguise themselves as caring about kids. Much like the Catholic Church was pervaded by sexual predators. It is a big ugly problem, and quite frankly is sometimes easier to ignore. We need to stay involved, and not look away.
I applaud these girls and their courage. I feel for their mother's and father's, it would be tough to know your daughter went through that.

In the AAU lawsuit filed by Powers she lied, but some of you who don't want to hear all the sides and only believe what you read then read this...
Ms. Powers-Barnhard states AAU Championships have stay to play
AAU - no we don't and NEVER have
Ms. Powers-Barnhard - team has qualified to compete at the 43rd AAU....June 2016
AAU - there is no qualification process for AAU.
Ms Powers-Barnhard- I am unable to shepard my team to a national title without having to see/or be in contact with Butler (2016)
AAU - you have brought your teams to AAU'S prior to 2016 and no issues? I believe your daughter was on one of those teams as well. So no worries about how to shepard them those years when Butler was there, just in 2016?
Ms Powers-Barnhard- AAU in 1983 was held in Los Angeles, CA.
AAU - no it was held in Lisle, IL at IBC or currently named BU. Google Daily Journal July 10, 1983.
Ms Powers-Barnhard- as a member of Sports Performance I participated in the AAU in 1983 at UCLA
AAU - it is not possible, we again have never held AAU'S in any other states besides IL and FL.
Ms Powers-Barnhard- as part of that we spent nights in the dorm at UCLA.
AAU - again 1983 AAU was held in Lisle, no stay to play and Sports Performance is a local club and all athletes stayed in their own homes.
Ms. Powers-Barnhard- as the sponsor of the 1983 AAU Championships at UCLA, the AAU was responsible for supervision of a minor.
AAU- it was not there and you were 18 years old.
Here is the big lie....
Ms. Powers-Barnhard- during 1983 Junior Olympics at UCLA, Butler had sex with me.
AAU - Not possible!
Let's throw one more thing in:
Ms Powers-Barnhard left Western Michigan to play for the Chicago Breeze. A women's pro league with teams from all over the country and she picks Chicago Breeze and guess who was the head coach....you got it Butler.

You are the worst in accusing the accuser, dbeyr, and you should be ashamed of yourself. You are a woman, I see.....hope you never have to live through what any of these three (and it's more likely AT LEAST five) women have lived through over these years or at the time they were abused. And, yes, "abused" is a euphemism.

This is a forum for reasonable people, not lawyers who grovel at the bottom of the food chain. Why don't you commit 10% of your fee to female victims of abuse, I am certain that will make you sleep better.

dbeyr does have a couple of very good points in the rebuttal of the lawsuit especially mention of the location in 1983. On page 5, lines 28-33 are all incorrect and a simple search is all it takes to get the location correct. Not a lawyer by any means but this is not starting out well for the case at all if you cannot get locations correct for a major tournament. Many of the other points are picky (qualifying for example) but on the other hand, are they really relevant either in the lawsuit?
And a jury trial? Seems far fetched for what is essentially a request for a restraining order. To be clear, I am not dismissing Powers claims at all but this lawsuit is so full of holes that it is dead on arrival

I am not a lawyer but thanks for the compliment. I do love Law & Order though:)
I am trying to advocate for women who are abused, I am afraid when you look closely into what Ms. Powers-Barnhard is claiming she is exactly what women don't need to represent them.

I do not blame those who now want no part of it.

You are a woman, I see.....hope you never have to live through what any of these three (and it's more likely AT LEAST five) women have lived through over these years or at the time they were abused. And, yes, "abused" is a euphemism. But we are saying now that it is okay for someone to make false statements and make-up times and places to allow their story to be heard? I am not discrediting that none of this has happened...there's 19 pages and counting of people arguing at each other without facts or claims to back them up. But now we are backing someone's false claims and saying that it is okay to do so? We all know what has happened almost 30 years ago, we all know what happened in 1995, we all know what happened in 2000, we all know what happened with the new lawsuit in 2015 and 2016. So where are the new FACTS? Where is there info on what AAU has done since the suit was filed? If we do not have any of this then there is nothing more to argue about. Maybe people should just get their facts straight first before continuing to chase a ghost. There has been nothing in this thread for the last dozen pages that provides anything new...it is just the same three people calling each other dumb for their responses as they hide behind their keyboard making false physical threats against a man they have never even met and will probably never meet at all. Chastise me all you want for this, as it will only confirm that this thread is now dead and is just for making fun of others. There is no longer a civil debate on this topic. We all have our differing opinions that do not need to be recycled on every page. Thank You

Every day when I am in the gym coaching an athlete whether female or male. Educating coaches and parents. Not by posting on a message board, that just fuels anger and helps no one. I was an athlete in the late 70's and early 80's and times were very different in the volleyball community. There were no rules, no Code of Ethics and as much as you and I agree that coach/player relationships no matter what year it was is not right. I had many friends dating coaches. I had coaches ask me out BUT I said no. Those friends who said yes, well some got married to the coach and some did not. I can tell you that those that did not get married are not calling it abuse, rape or saying that person is a predator. So many things are in place to protect athletes now. The biggest awareness needs to be parent education to look for signs. I am reading Brenda Tracey's story and I can't figure out for the life of me why her mom didn't say we are pressing charges. I understand how Brenda was afraid of hurting her friends or their boyfriends but what mom or dad doesn't step in and say "I love you and will protect you and those friends are not friends if they pressure you to not stand up for yourself." She is hurt by college coaches not standing up for her but what about her mom, other family members? ?

I always like to say that the best thing about Volleyball is the Great Coaches who plant things in young athlete's that serve them their entire lives; then their are the Rick Butler's of the world. Hopefully when we are discussing pieces of work like him, the former group understands that it is in no disrespect to them.

If your going to defend Rick Butler on VT, you have to have more than 5 prior postings. Just helps with the old what's real and what's not process.
Here's why I keep posting. I have more than a few daughters, which to those in the same place needs no explaining.
And to you pal, why would you read what was it 19 pages of nothing, if you did not have some skin in the game? Just read the first and last parts of this post, the middle would not mean s--t to you.
