Carly Kan is doing a lot better than I thought she would. Seriously, when it was announced that she would join the beach team, my first thought was, Will she quit the team and concentrate on her Master's program if she doesn't get in one of the flights? I thought for sure the other beach veterans would do a lot better than Kan, who hadn't played beach in a looooong time. But I guess athleticism will get you places.

I missed the stream last night. (I was playing Battlefield: Bad Company 2, LOL!) I hope UHVolleyballFanToo uploads the matches on youtube. I watched. Hopefully, it will be uploaded to YouTube. I personally don't think it was the most impressive matches to watch. Nebraska has some great athletes but overall the quality of beach play wasn't as good as some of the other matches this past weekend (too bad they didn't stream USC). It can be tough sometimes for a seasoned beach player to play against a little more unorthodox playing style. I don't think Nebraska's #1 team was as good as they have been all week, so it made for a not so impressive match. I know there have been comments on how impressive Tucker/Martin are after this one match. They looked good last night, but they have been inconsistent in some of their matches too. Taylor/Schucht didn't play very well last night (they've played better). Just a thought, but I still wish Hall wasn't so set in his pairings or flights so early in the season (he went with a lot of the partnerships from the Fall before any of the indoor players arrived - Taylor, Maglio, Mitchem, Kan etc.). I think it might take trying some different combinations in order to win a National Championships. The team is doing well, but will they win a Championship? We'll see how they do against Pepperdine (or UCLA etc.). It would be nice to see a little more shake up happen early in the season and see if they can find a winning combination arise and perhaps stronger at all flights (sometimes this chemistry comes in a game situation rather than a practice). I actually like how FSU used their depth and mixed up various players at the Outrigger event (so long as it is done legally). It was hard to predict what lineup would show up on any given day, but they also got practice working with different partners. I like how they used their depth and will have some experience together in the event of injury. Even USC had to mix things up the weekend before last when Wheeler (flight 2) was out with injury. They practiced with different pairing during the week and did well that weekend in the East vs West meet. Taylor/Tucker (Tucker plays well with a big and Nikki plays best with someone with great beach IQ) Maglio/Schucht (this would be a really athletic pairing) Tucker/Maglio (Tucker has some Spieler like qualities, but is a little bigger and stronger) Martin/Homayun Martin/Weaver Mitchem/Weaver (at 5?) Ozee/Zalopany is going well (as an option to Huddleston) There are lots of good players that could play on any given day if they were able to use different combos. SaveSaveSaveSave

Couple of interesting points made by the commentators last night:
1. Will Robyn allow the indoor players to continue to play beach?
2. Nebraska has 12 players on their roster, all are indoor players. They use beach as off season training. They only play 13 matches.

Even that may be changing as USC just committed a 2020 to play both.....

According to Twitter Hawaii won 5-0 over Irvine Valley College, won 4-1 over TCU (I believe the loss came at flight 2) and 5-0 win over Stanford at meet at IVC.
Team spent time Saturday at Pesto's house.
Pepperdine will be next big test on Wednesday.

Georgia State does not have any crossover players. The following schools only do it very rarely, like for a senior after she is done with indoor, or a special case: FSU, FAU, Stetson, FIU, South Carolina. Probably a few more I am forgetting.

I think that RAMS making Iosia quit Beach is unfair. I know many will disagree with me, but there is something to be said for sticking out a commitment. I appreciate RAMS being dedicated to doing well indoors. However, it is not fair to the teammates and Beach staff.
The team (both staff and players) invested time in Iosia and could have been developing a different pairing instead of her (had they known this would happen). And what about her partner? Will Zalopany not see much time now? Sure she played a match with Ozee but then next match she is ousted for Ozee's regular partner. I would also be ticked if she made Mags quit too!
Strictly from a Beach perspective, I think RAMS should have let her finish the season out in fairness to everyone else. Indoor and Beach are two separate teams. Beach does not exist to support the indoor team (though it can be beneficial).
The girls on the Beach team dedicate every much of themselves to the sport and are there to pursue their own National Championship. Whether or not, you are an indoor fan more or not, it is still not fair.
Luckily UH still has some depth but not playing at the higher level of competition (sorry even exhibition is a step below ) could hurt them. It's a tough time of year with only one weekend left in their regular season to do this. Hopefully Ozee can step up with whomever she is paired with.
