Why wouldn't they use Avila Beach? It faces South and I would think would be warmer and somewhat shielded from the wind. I haven't been there in years. Are there any VB poles? Avila Beach would be my choice, too. Think there are VB poles and since the oil spill clean-up project,...$millions have been spent to make Avila a beautiful environment.

As I remember it Avila was popular with families and the whale watching tourist.
Pismo was early on an AVP stop.

There are an array of fine restaurants and new hotel facilities even a beautiful golf course/hotel complex,...all within walking distance of the beach. Having the Big West Championship Tournament here would be perfect.

Cal Poly alum here. I hosted tournaments at Pismo and helped install a couple additional courts 5 years ago. There are at least 10 permanent nets year round at the end of Wadsworth Avenue. Only downsides are that Pismo sand is the finest sand I've played in, so it gets a little dusty in wind and cakes on your skin a bit and b) courts are a solid 10 minute walk from the pier, where the action/tourists/restaurants/parking lots are located. The street parking is fine around Wadsworth Avenue.
Avila has some issues, including hard pack sand, fist-sized rocks, limited parking, and one terrible court. There isn't much beach for an event. The oil cleanup funding has transformed the scene and it is great to hang out or dine. With a tractor and some temporary courts, it could be an awesome venue. I doubt they'll ever want to spend the money to make it happen.

I've enjoyed several visits to Avila...never to play sand volleyball. Probably take some $$$/sand to make an acceptable venue out of Avila. Perhaps the Avila merchants/Avila Beach Golf Resort would contribute,...since they would benefit over the years. Wonder,...how many courts you need to have a quality college venue?

Wonder,...how many courts you need to have a quality college venue? 2 minimum for college competition. Imo: 3 would be ideal. 5 would be minimum for hosting a conference tournament or anything more than a dual meet.

Yeah...got to watch Cal Poly play at Manhattan Beach and they were solid. Definitely a LARGE improvement from last year...Todd has them playing well. It's great for the league to have 3 good teams now, and as a Long Beach St fan, I'm looking forward to the matchup.
