Final bids for 17s were Balboa Bay, 949, AZ Fear, MB Surf, SASVBC, Seaside, Legacy, Coast, Pac6 (huge surprise) and Long Island Academy.
The 949 semifinal match against Mountain View was an insane game. I hope it gets uploaded to YouTube soon.

I feel either way Balboa wouldve still have won that game. They would have still have been up even if Vanguard had gotten that point. That point was mostly for the momentum im assuming?

When the Balboa Bay parents say "Vanguard really got hosed" maybe the ref should reconsider why he chose to not allow the line judge to even speak. If the line judge isn't there to make calls seems like the ref can just call the game alone. Doesn't matter in the end, but losing doesn't feel as bad when the other team hasn't been given an advantage they don't need and didn't ask for.

No matter the outcome of the point. Balboa dominated all the teams they faced even in the finals. Vanguard lost first round in the silver bracket of playoffs. Balboa was also seeded 1st so they were even favored to win. Its the head refs job to follow his opinion, there is a reason his call dominates over everyone. Its not the line judges call to say whether or not the player got the block. If the ref believes that the ball hit the block then its his job to make the call he believes in. Plus he has a better angle to see whether or not the ball hit the block over the player who was the line judge. If both the down ref and head ref saw it touch the block then what is there to argue?

It had nothing to do with the block. The ball hit the antenna and the ref refused to even let the line judge come over and tell him what he saw. I agree it's the refs game and he has the ultimate call but when every other person saw the same thing the line judge called including the Balboa parents, maybe he should have at least let him speak before over-ruling him. Vanguard lost to Coast in 3 the next game, which, if you recall, is the only other team that gave Balboa any challenge at all.

What if it was the other way around and the ref saw it hit the antenna and the line judge said it didnt and he changed the call. The crowd would be very mad at the fact that he's changing the call that the line judge made over his own. And I also recall Balboa beating Coast 2-0. First set won by 2 and second set won by 4 if im not mistaken.

The 949 semifinal match against Mountain View was an insane game. I hope it gets uploaded to YouTube soon. That semi was a high level match. I am surprised MVVC 17 lost two matches in the tournament Aspire and SASVBC. Does Aspire have a bid? It looks like there is no dominate favorite team for 17s. MVVC 17 lost to Aspire and SASVBC 17 SASVBC 17 went undefeated until they lost to HBC 17 in the quarterfinals HBC 17 was undefeated until they lost to Balboa 17 in the semis 949 17 was undefeated until they lost to MVVC 17 in the semis LIVBC went undefeated until they lost to MVVC 17 Balboa 17 was undefeated until they lost to MVVC 17 in the finals. AZ Fear 17 only loses were to SASVBC and HBC 17 Seaside 17 only lost to SASVBC 17 and 949 17 and they took 949 17 to three sets. A lot can happen from now until nationals. Last year Balboa 18 finished 9th at the SCVA Invitational and won nationals.

Great Tournament with the best teams in the country still coming from Cali!
Balboa Bay - Always in control, even in final match 949 - Talented top to bottom & thought they would win it... Rise 18 Adam - Most arrogant team I have ever seen & glad they got 3rd. Hey no signing of any documentary waivers this year? Cool! HBC - Another bunch of arrogant entitled bunch that imploded in Chicago.... LBVC - Great upset here ! MB Smurf - Great talent top to bottom - well coached squad Yorktowne - Alot of close games - knows how to close matches & a bunch of good kids as well Coast - Didnt watch but there in top 10 every year Rockstar - Not sure what happened here as I think they should have finished in top 4.
Also: Whats the deal with most Cali teams (except Bay2Bay - Class Team who shagged) not shagging balls for the other team in warm ups? Yes I know its not mandatory by rule but common courtesy to the other team & the spectators as well as the other teams playing matches....

Balboa Bay 18s- Very calm and collective majority of the game, even when in trouble. Knows how to close out a match. Runs everything very fast and smoothly. Fun team to watch. With way to many solid back up players. 949 18s- Has a lot of potential. Would not have considered them from beginning of tournament to be a finals contender. Has a lot of experienced talent that played 18s last year. Rise 18s- Always manages to somehow pull out the W (except this weekend). Very minimal dominant players. Could gain a few players, which i heard that they're getting Gabi Garcia from Borinquen Coqui. HBC 18s- Only way of winning is off of momentum. Very easily shut down. But hard to stop once they gain that momentum. Like running weird trick plays (very rarely works). LBVC 18s- Surprised contender for the gold bracket with the upset. Don't think they will get very far in JO's. MB Surf 18s- Very dominant team but somehow don't make it as far as I would think they would get. Dont make a lot of mistakes. And talk a mean game on court. Another team with solid back up players on the bench. Yorktowne 18s- Could be a very good team. But always ends up falling short to Cali teams. Coast 18s- Very good team that put a lot of teams in trouble. Kind of a team that came out of no where. A lot of room for improvement that they'll probably make before JO's. Rockstar 18s- Surprised where they finished. Seems to be very reliant on their middle. But an unstoppable force once they play their game. Just had a bad weekend i presume.

Going back to the 17's pre tourney predictions made by livbcguy3 on Jan. 16- Mostly nailed it with respect to the top 10, a little out of order but darn close. Under appreciated the strength of Balboa Bay 17Blue picked at 11th but finished 2nd. A couple of other under appreciated seedings- 16. LEGACY BOYS 17 ELITE finished 10th and 20.COAST 17-Blue finished 11th. Other shockers or perhaps over appreciated were 8.Aspire 17-Rox finished 19th, 12.Team Rockstar 17-1 finished 17th, 13. NCVC Asics 17-1 finished 21st and- what happened to 9. Bones 17 Black finishing 25th? Maybe these teams were up against a tough pool due to inaccurate seeds or had one bad match at the wrong time?
