And I also recall Balboa beating Coast 2-0. First set won by 2 and second set won by 4 if im not mistaken. Umm...since you have to win by two, wining by two indicates a close game. For the record Balboa Bay won the first 29-27 and the second 25-22. Coast played Balboa Bay closer than anyone else on the last last day in gold.

I saw that call. I feel either way Balboa wouldve still have won that game. They would have still have been up even if Vanguard had gotten that point. That point was mostly for the momentum im assuming? It was 11-10 Balboa Bay. It would have tied the game. False, it was 12-10...would have made the score 12-11, which is definitely better than 13-10, but not the same as a tie game. It was definitely a bad call, but I think most people including myself were upset most because the up ref made the call solely on his own even though the side line ref had the best angle and refuse to consult with either side judge. If you know this ref, he is very well known for bad judgement including over ruling correct calls and refusing to listen to any sort of reason.

Final bids for 17s were Balboa Bay, 949, AZ Fear, MB Surf, SASVBC, Seaside, Legacy, Coast, Pac6 (huge surprise) and Long Island Academy. The 949 semifinal match against Mountain View was an insane game. I hope it gets uploaded to YouTube soon. That semi was a high level match. I am surprised MVVC 17 lost two matches in the tournament Aspire and SASVBC. Does Aspire have a bid? It looks like there is no dominate favorite team for 17s. MVVC 17 lost to Aspire and SASVBC 17 SASVBC 17 went undefeated until they lost to HBC 17 in the quarterfinals HBC 17 was undefeated until they lost to Balboa 17 in the semis 949 17 was undefeated until they lost to MVVC 17 in the semis LIVBC went undefeated until they lost to MVVC 17 Balboa 17 was undefeated until they lost to MVVC 17 in the finals. AZ Fear 17 only loses were to SASVBC and HBC 17 Seaside 17 only lost to SASVBC 17 and 949 17 and they took 949 17 to three sets. A lot can happen from now until nationals. Last year Balboa 18 finished 9th at the SCVA Invitational and won nationals. Actually, 949 17s is still going to dominate everyone...their only loss was a lineup faux pas by the coach in second set that led to the loss. They crushed MVVC in first set and switched things up in game two and lost close games. Kevin Kobrine, one of, if not the best oppo in the class hasn't been playing much due to being a star basketball player. Plus, they just added perhaps the top middle in the class to an already dominating line up. Sorry everyone else, but if the 949 17s boys want to win it all they will and no one can stop them.

The third set of the 17s semifinals is up on youtube. A lot of very good players. MVVC 17 is big and put up a big block and has an excellent libero. MVVC 17 serving was off the first set. In the third set they didn't miss a serve. 949 17 had three service errors and one ace.

Did the middle play? Because they had a smaller (pretty athletic) player in every game I watched. It appeared that 949's setter got exposed a little at the net by MVVC's big pins. Their 6-5" OH didn't play very high above the net at all. He's more of an in system hitter...not going to hit out of many highball double or tripple block situations. I thought MVVC handled him. Also their libero is good but not lights out. But as long as the setter doesn't get too cute and hits his locations, they will be really good but certainly beatable. Tight, low sets get blocked by big boys blocks. If they add to their size with the new kids that will certainly help. Not that big of a surprise to see MVVC be successful with their size.

i would think that Balboa would've still won though. No matter the outcome of the point. Balboa dominated all the teams they faced even in the finals. Vanguard lost first round in the silver bracket of playoffs. Balboa was also seeded 1st so they were even favored to win. Its the head refs job to follow his opinion, there is a reason his call dominates over everyone. Its not the line judges call to say whether or not the player got the block. If the ref believes that the ball hit the block then its his job to make the call he believes in. Plus he has a better angle to see whether or not the ball hit the block over the player who was the line judge. If both the down ref and head ref saw it touch the block then what is there to argue? It had nothing to do with the block. The ball hit the antenna and the ref refused to even let the line judge come over and tell him what he saw. I agree it's the refs game and he has the ultimate call but when every other person saw the same thing the line judge called including the Balboa parents, maybe he should have at least let him speak before over-ruling him. Vanguard lost to Coast in 3 the next game, which, if you recall, is the only other team that gave Balboa any challenge at all. There was no touch! However balboa bay is always a top 2 program top to bottom in the country! With that said let's not argue the 3rd set! As vanguard you had set 1! In control after 20 by like 3-4 points in set 2! The third set shouldn't of happened. Get it done in Indy boys! See everyone this weekend and the BANE

Off on a tangent but the results of this tournament makes me think the Battle of the Bay between Newport Harbor vs Corona del Mar is going to a great match.
I am sure I will miss some players.
Balboa Bay 18 - Gold Newport Harbor - Cole Pender (OH), Lawrence Spencer (M), Landon Monroe, Carlos Rivera-Vega (Setter but may not be eligible) Corona del Mar - Grant Shaw (L), Jake Meyer (M), Mitchell Haly (M), Clay Dickinson (OPP/OH)
949 18 - Silver Corona del Mar - Tyler Flood (M)
949 17 earned Bronze Newport Harbor - Ethan Talley (M) Corona del Mar - Kevin Kobrine (OPP), Patrick Paragas (Setter), Diego Perez (L), Brandon Browning (OH)
Balboa 17 earned gold Newport Harbor - Dayne Chalmers, Corona del Mar - Nick Alacano, Patrick Wynn (L) Balboa 16 - Gold Corona del Mar - Max Dunk, Matt Olson, Adam Flood

Landon Monroe will most likely be the setter. And i completely agree with you that Battle of the Bay will be a great game to watch unlike last year where it was just CDM, with all the seniors, just were dominating the young team, Newport Harbor.

Aslo, I believe that Balboa 17s got silver to MVVC's gold

They counted the first preseason games he played while at Marina and his season at the Puerto Rican high school.

However, despite the 2 losses, MVVC 17s was the best team in the tournament from a statistical standpoint. The two losses were in non-elimination games, and they won all the games when it mattered. The top 5 have to be in this order: MVVC, 949, Balboa bay, HBC, and Spike and serve. Although SASVBC beat MVVC early on day 2, MVVC won when it mattered and SASVBC choked in the quarters.

In 18s, top 6 teams were So Calif teams. That was without Coast and Team Rockstar only losing 1 match each not making the top 6. Could see so cal getting all the teams in the gold bracket at nationals. I think it will be Rise and Balboa bay again for the championship. But 949 Team Rockstar, MB Surf and Coast are oh,so close.

Lietuva,
So the best teams from the East and Mid West were not there and you think it will be an all California Gold? When was the last time that happened ?
