So there are a few posts here that mention Rettke as a RS. Didn't she play middle this spring with Duello/Whalen on the right? Where is Loberg gonna go? Rettke played OH/RS in HS, and some Badger fans are fantasizing about her putting up a big block on the right. She played MB this spring because she was our only active MB, with Nelson having graduated, Williams being out with a stress fracture, and Hart still being in high school. I personally think she will stay at MB. Her slide is money. Duello played mostly RS. Whalen played mostly L2 when Bates was libero. She played some RS when Sheff was messing around with a 6-2, but I'm thinking Sheff is projecting her to be an L2. He's said as much. I don't really see her starting this fall unless something happens to Gilly or Molly. I think she'll be our first off the bench. RE: Loberg - She's got a ton of potential but is somewhat raw, and Whalen has a semester of collegiate practice and weight training on her. If Gilly & Molly are both healthy, I would not be surprised if she redshirts. There's no reason to burn a season of her eligibility when she will get minimal playing time. If she's game, she seems an ideal redshirt candidate.

So there are a few posts here that mention Rettke as a RS. Didn't she play middle this spring with Duello/Whalen on the right? Where is Loberg gonna go? Penn State is going to be good, not perfect, but good. I think they'll get picked off 2-3 times and maybe one of the next 5 catches all the breaks and wins the conference but Penn State has to be the smart money. Rutgers' plan is apparently to wait until the Big 10 money is in to remove the coach and make any effort at volleyball. That said, I think they accidentally hired a pretty good assistant from Florida State. Maryland is 1 year away from being a top 5 team in the conference. Ok. I'll bite. Let me preface this by saying I am a Maryland fan. Maryland will be as good as the likes of Nebraska, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan State/Purdue and Penn State in 2018? Do I think they could take wins off those teams in 2018? Sure. I'd be curious where'd Maryland would get 13-15 wins in conference in 2018, because that's what you'd need to be top 5. I can see 10-10, even in 2017. After that it gets even tougher.

I would agree they'll be as good as Michigan State, Purdue, Ohio State, and Michigan by 2018 but will still be a step behind the others you listed above. They'll have a chance to knock those teams off when playing at home but not ready to compete on the road yet. Love what Aird and Hughes are doing at Maryland and best of luck to them!

Maryland will be as good as the likes of Nebraska, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan State/Purdue and Penn State in 2018? Do I think they could take wins off those teams in 2018? Sure. Yes. They are green, but they have talent everywhere, except maybe for the setter. Their hitting percentages weren't high enough last year so whether they train one, or recruit one, or find a transfer, they need to improve there but if they can do that, and the players stay healthy and keep training, the should be very good. For 2018 Purdue and Michigan State are each graduating 5 after this year. Penn State graduates an army and they'll reload but they'll be young. Nebrasksa loses Albrecht, Hunter and Holman. Depending on where and when they play those matches, Maryland should be in a position to threaten almost every night. But that is in 2018 and this is a 2017 thread.

What's your prediction for Maryland in 2017? Certainly I think they are in the likes of Iowa.

My call for Maryland in 2017: Bottom half of the middle third.

My call for Maryland in 2017: Bottom half of the middle third. Agree. 7-9 wins. If I see their schedule I would predict with more specificity.

My call for Maryland in 2017: Bottom half of the middle third. That seems a very long winded way to say "8th or 9th place."

My call for Maryland in 2017: Bottom half of the middle third. Would that be roughly equivalent to distress in the lower tract?

Was the low hitting percentage because of the hitters, the setting, or the fact that the majority of offense came from a Freshman that everyone knew was getting the ball that defenses could double and triple down on?? Or how about a combination of all three?? I wouldn't say that they need to train another hitter or recruit a better one. I'd like to see another Freshman put into that situation do what that one did with what she was given. Will be interesting to see what the team does with a well balanced offense and how much the hitting percentages go up because of better setting and more options!!!

I'm betting on a large part of Maryland's issues last year being that they were often running a one-option offense. Good passes were going middle or right; Milana was getting everything else. The kid from Washington who enrolled this January at Maryland looked good at the UA AA match in December. I'm betting that once Aird gets some more guns, Maryland's offense becomes more effective.

Exactly!!! They also have Katie Meyers coming in to add power in the middle. They will also have power from the backcourt via the pike as well. It's going to be so fun to watch!!!!

The big buildup at the beginning of the season is curiosity about how hideous their uniforms will be. I do like that yellow libero jersey. It really pops.

And just for fun, first WNT scrimmage 4/5 setters were B1G products (Hancock/PSU, Carlini/Wisconsin, Dannemiller/Michigan, Nichol/Purdue). Bugg ruined what could've been an all-Big Ten affair.
Looking at the crop of B1G setters for the upcoming season there's a lot of bright prospects who could be in that gym in 2021.
