So there are a few posts here that mention Rettke as a RS. Didn't she play middle this spring with Duello/Whalen on the right? Where is Loberg gonna go? Penn State is going to be good, not perfect, but good. I think they'll get picked off 2-3 times and maybe one of the next 5 catches all the breaks and wins the conference but Penn State has to be the smart money. Rutgers' plan is apparently to wait until the Big 10 money is in to remove the coach and make any effort at volleyball. That said, I think they accidentally hired a pretty good assistant from Florida State. Maryland is 1 year away from being a top 5 team in the conference. Rutgers' Coach Werneke made a very smart move in prying Anna Khrystenko away from Florida State. Look for Rutgers to bring in a bevy of foreign recruits as long as Khrystenko is on staff. If you continually come up short in recruiting American recruits, change direction and go after quality foreign players. Khrystenko did that at FSU, and she will be successful in doing that at Rutgers. Also look for Rutgers' middles and blocking, in general, to improve under K's coaching. It may take a couple of years, but there is nowhere for Rutgers to go but up!

Sheffield said he would explore using Rettke at any of the front row positions. She played Middle this spring since Bucky was down to 2 middles due to injury.
A lot depends on Haggerty & Williams health with respect to who plays where. I would like to see Loberg on Left to give more size in contrast to Gillis. Rettke's club and HS teams moved her around in a 3 middle offense so opponents couldn't cheat blockers over to her.

Foreign players are going to play for Rutgers because they want to play in the U.S. and Rutgers will offer an opportunity. They shouldn't have an illusions they are going to improve Rutgers in any meaningful way. You tend to see quite a few HBCU teams with international players as well. None of those schools are going to be competitive in anything other than in their conferences. If I'm a foreign player, I'm picking those over Rutgers if you want to have a winning season and can be competitive in the conference, although unless you are going to Howard, you are going to get a better education at Rutgers, thanks to chronic underfunding of HBCU by state governments (for the state schools, anyway). You'll probably get better facilities at the HBCU schools compared to Rutgers, but the bar is pretty low (rain delay, anyone?). I loved watching Howard when they came to the fieldhouse. What a scrappy team.

Hard to imagine Rutgers getting competitive in the B1G. Facilities at Rutgers need an upgrade. If you take them as a sign of the commitment of the university to volleyball, it's not a great advert for visiting players.
That said, LIU Brooklyn managed to have a good team of foreign players for a while, and their digs are pretty minimal. But they are in Brooklyn. New Brunswick is not a particularly inviting town.

I believe the quality of facilities issue may be a reason that some foreign players might choose Rutgers. I am making an assumption that some of the facilities overseas may be more like Rutgers' old, ugly gym than say Penn State's. These players may be much more concerned with playing in the U.S. in the top U.S. collegiate volleyball conference than how nice and shiny the facilities are. There are U.S. collegiate sports whose good programs are loaded with foreign students: golf and tennis come to mind.

Winning is more fun than getting destroyed and losing 20 straight matches and 60 straight sets.
And ...New Brunswick. Sure, they have Joyce Kilmer Blvd, but really it isn't full of inviting trees.

With Purdue returning almost everyone, including Cuttino, I'm surprised that there aren't some people picking them to be in the top third of the conference.

Big 10 is too up and down within conference to predict every teams standing....I'm gonna with the top half, and tourney teams
1- PSU 2- Wisconsin 3- Nebraska 4- Purdue 5- MSU 6- Minnesota 7- MIchigan
I could also see Illinois, Maryland, and OSU in serious tourney talks this year.

You think Minny drops that far with the loss of the Tapps (but keeping SSS), and Wisconsin doesn't drop hardly at all even with the loss of LC?

I don't know a whole lot about Big 10 volleyball, but are Purdue and Michigan really that good to finish 4th/5th? I would think Minnesota and Michigan State are better.

I still don't know if Purdue can pass well enough for this. MSU at #7 would be a huge underachievement. They are set up for a very, very good year.
