Big 10 is too up and down within conference to predict every teams standing....I'm gonna with the top half, and tourney teams 1- PSU 2- Wisconsin 3- Nebraska 4- Purdue 5- Michigan 6- Minnesota 7- MSU I could also see Illinois, Maryland, and OSU in serious tourney talks this year. I don't know a whole lot about Big 10 volleyball, but are Purdue and Michigan really that good to finish 4th/5th? I would think Minnesota and Michigan State are better. Just best guesses, I mean, a few matches here and there last year and the big standings look pretty different.

I still don't know if Purdue can pass well enough for this. MSU at #7 would be a huge underachievement. They are set up for a very, very good year. Gah, I got Michigan and MSU confused. I do think MSU will be better, swap them.

You think Minny drops that far with the loss of the Tapps (but keeping SSS), and Wisconsin doesn't drop hardly at all even with the loss of LC? They also lost the AVCA Player of the Year. Dude, right, how the heck did I forget Wilhite? Guess I've got Tapps on the brain from having watched Paige in the Pam Am Cup the past few days.

I am concerned about minnesotas offense, they lost a lot. Frankly I think Minnesota can easily finish higher but it's not necessarily because I think they would be the better team, but because of the big 10 schedule, who they skip, and their home matches. In fact, I may take a closer look at the big schedules and update my prediction, a couple matches here or there could make the difference between finishing 3rd and finishing 7th, really.

I think Minnesota stays in the top 5, but losing both Tapps and Wilhite is a big, big loss - not to mention a DS that allowed Minnesota to run a blocking sub for SSS when she was exposed by tall OH's in the front row. Great recruiting class + Pittman coming off a redshirt year should help though.

I do think MSU will be better, swap them. It can be hard to separate them - they can't even separate themselves. They've split their season series for 7 straight years - that's highly improbably even for two evenly matched teams (esp. cuz 2 years there were road victors).

Here are my thoughts - which are likely completely wrong.
Tier 1: Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Penn State, Purdue, Wisconsin. Penn State will be everyone's preseason #1 - but are they likely to be better than last year? Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin are either an elite program or are on the verge of being an elite program and potentially will reload very quickly. Michigan State and Purdue return a lot and are/were very talented.
Tier 2: Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State. Each of these teams either lost enough or are coming from a lower tier that they cannot start in Tier 1 this year. They also have enough talent and recruit well enough that they can be pretty darn good/dangerous.
Tier 3: Indiana, Northwestern. These are hardly bad teams - but this conference is probably deeper this year than every before.
Tier 4 Rutgers. The only one that I would predict with much confidence.

Now that 2017 conference schedules are known, any refined predictions? I will offer (# = 2016 BIG finish): Penn State-4 Minnesota-2 Nebraska-1 Michigan State-5 Wisconsin-3 Purdue-10 Ohio State-7 Illinois-8 (10-10 2016 conference record, no less in 2017) Michigan-6 Iowa-9 (very tough conference schedule, but sets up a good run 2nd half) Indiana-11 Maryland-12 (brutal conference schedule) Northwestern-13 Rutgers-14 Actually, Wisconsin and Minnesota tied for 2nd in the Big Ten last year, both finishing at 17-3. Your ranking is understandable, but not quite correct.

1- PSU vs. Chemistry issues continue, could plague them 2- Nebraska vs. replacing RS and OH2. OH2 will cost them a few matches 3- Minnesota vs. reloading, strong new additions could bump them to #2 4- Wisconsin vs. with loss of Haggerty likely, too much to replace, youth and Gillis too inconsistent 5- Purdue vs. consistency 6- Michigan vs. weak back court, loss of strong RS 7- MSU vs. consistency

And I doubt Maryland is going to finish as low as 12th. I'd like to see Iowa & Maryland finish higher in the conference and qualify for the NCAA, but their schedules are almost punishing. Both teams need to win at home and pull 1-2 upsets on the road (same for any team outside the top 5). I really like Maryland's roster and the Terrapins are fun to watch. They'll need to pull off some truly shock upsets, but it happens, and one or two for both could suffice to get them in.

Doesn't PSU take the #1 recruiting class in their Sr. Year? This should be their year! Neb will be rebuilding for half or more of the season; So my picks are= 1 PSU 2 Michigan 3 Minn 4 Wisc 5 Neb GBR I hope you make a liar out of my predictions in a positive way!!! 6 OSU 7 MSU 8, &; 9 Iowa; Purdue 10 Ill; these gals probably should be higher 11 Maryland 12 Ind 13 Rutgers 14 Northwestern Could be the toughest bottom pick ever!! Just guessing; cuz I really don't have a clue! GO HUSKERS

The teams with the most returning talent are Michigan State and Penn State. I really think MSU has a chance to win the BIG next season. They have a great set of seniors. Autumn Bailey is a AA talent 6 rotation OH. Alyssa Garvelink is an beast in the middle. Minarick is a top 3 setter in the BIG, Kranda and Toliver are effective hitters and 2 of the top servers. If they get good libero play their chances are as good as anyone's.
