Totally agreed Can't believe after all these years, the best setter Is still Van Orden in the Sealy's era I re-watched some of the UCLA/Minnesota NCAA tournament match yesterday. TVW looks visibly annoyed at the bad sets. Did she transfer because of it? I always thought her transfer was weird she probably could have been the future of UCLA or another top program really. The Minnesota match she just looked very annoyed it also didn't help when she got that kill off a touch and they didn't call it.

Well, if she is a true Oppo, lined up as an OH, playing middle back, hitting on the left more than she wants, I can see why she would be annoyed. RS and LS timing are different and throw in 6-2 and inconsistent individual setters, it sounds like a total disaster to me.

TVW's transfer wasn't about setting or annoyance with playing style or positioning.

TVW's transfer wasn't about setting or annoyance with playing style or positioning. Well spill the tea, inquiring minds would like to know or are you not at liberty to say.

Agree with that as well. Their youth probably wouldn't be as noticeable if they had a top notch setter. Miller was supposed to be that but hasn't shown it. I think Muno could have been that but Sealy wasted an entire year of development last year for her by not letting her set. Muno could be an elite libero or setter, and if she was on year 3 in her development at anything, she might have gotten there. Unfortunately, when Sealy stopped playing her at right side last year, he didn't think to himself, "Wow I may need this kid to set next year, I should probably work on that every day instead of having her be a backup." I never got how Muno was recruited as a setter but then continued to be a hitter in high school and club. How many competitive matches had Muno set before coming to UCLA? A couple of chances to run a 6-2 when Mizuno wanted to let Iosia hit? And then she's supposed to START in the PAC-12 right away? And with Miller coming in the year after it (and now 2 more in 2018) it just never seemed like a coherent plan to me. Perhaps Sealy is using her exactly how he intended. She came out of high school as a player who could adapt and basically do any skill in the game as a high level. Each year is unique and the team has a weakness and she can help fill into whatever void the team needs her to in that given year. Does this help maximize her for becoming an AA setter or AA libero? No, but it helps to team be better overall. Tough for her individually, but beneficial for the team.

Is Sealy hurting for DS's/liberos?

Based on the footage from their scrimmage today Sponcil was setting along with who I presume to be Miller (could be wrong). Mosser was playing oppo, Rogers was playing middle, and Muno was libero, those were the significant things I saw

From the video clips, I'd want the duo of Sponcil setting and Muno at libero. They seem to have a really good connection and Muno's passing is back to form. Kyra Rogers looks to have improved too.
Regardless, the girls are looking good. Some definite kinks to work out if they're going to be an offensive threat.

- I like Simo's passing more than Muno's. I see those two battling for the libero position for a few games at the beginning of the season. - It looks like Rogers is the only middle who can hit in front of the setter. This will probably help her get the 2nd middle position over Ryan and Light. - Sponcil's setting >>>> Miller's. - Excited to see May and Mosser's progression over the season.

Is UCLA looking at a 6-2 still or going 5-1 with Sponcil?

Is UCLA looking at a 6-2 still or going 5-1 with Sponcil? considering who the head coach is, the answer is a box of chocolates. I prefer 5-1 and think they should have stuck with it last year with Chandler. the last team to win with a 6-2 offense is in freaking 2003
