Cal Poly will have a test on Saturday.
Overall Poly played pretty solid, expect UCLA will put up a better block in the middle than Denver did, being a big difference.
Other than TVW unable to get her serve in on the first 6 attempts - well, the one that netted over was an ace - TVW was on.
Brouker looked good, Poly will need a big match out of her again on Saturday, - should be a great match.

& Hawaii's first round turns out to be a microcosm of their season
started slow, then improves and fights back to give hope, but alas one more 5 set loss in the end
good transition season, those 5 set matches were the achilles this year for Hawaii

final thoughts for the Big West NCAAs Hawaii almost outlasted Ilinois, who then took down Wash Cal Poly - 27-0 vs mid-majors this year Cal Poly - 0-3 vs BCS/Pac-12 this year Congrats to both teams for making it to the tournament. Anytime the Big West can have a two bid showing at the NCAA's is a positive for the BW. Both teams had a good showing and were not out classed (as some of the other bids) in the tournament. Both lost to good opponents. CalPoly had a good season and overall their team had the most talent as a team. One weakness, perhaps, is they were not a strong blocking team. UCLA scouted them well and executed their game plan well. Hawaii played with a lot of heart and was peaking at the right time (just two points shy of Poly in the last outing). Overall, their inconsistency plagued them. They relied heavily on two players. Unfortunately, the players had to show up in every game (from the start) in order to be competitive especially as the competition increased. One player can't carry the load against BIG teams. Too much up and down performances as a team and from some individuals hurt Hawaii.

Does Crosson use the best season Cal Poly has had in 2 decades to try and upgrade schools or does he stay at Cal Poly long term for the job security?
Crosson has to notice that his former assistant Chris Tamas is now head coach at a higher profile school than Cal Poly in Illinois. Crosson sees Tamas coaching in the Sweet 16 and must wonder if he could be doing the same if he were at a Power 5 conference school. With their setter and Big West POY graduating, the chances of Cal Poly having a better season next year is small. And once the Van Winden sisters leave will it be another 20 years until the Taylor Nelson+Van Winden daughters are playing for Cal Poly before they replicate this season? Having won the Big West COY Crosson's stock is at an all time high. While Torrey Van Winden is still playing for Cal Poly may be Crosson's best opportunity to parlay this year's success into a Power 5 coaching job. If Crosson leaves for a better job and fails wouldn't Cal Poly just hire him back.

Crosson was an assistant @ Cal. Not sure if they have filled that head coaching position, that is one 'upgrade' that I could see - but also the Pac-12 is brutal competition and then where a coach wants to live.
I think it's a little silly though to point at Tamas as some sort of reference point, there is always a certain amount of serendipity involved in the career paths of coaches, probably some mediocre coaches catch a break and then grow as a coach.
I don't see him going anywhere. I think the more interesting aspect will be to see if (and how long) Cal Poly gives Crosson a 'knee-jerk' extension to Crosson. Obviously it's always hard to argue with 27-3.
Given the Cal Poly football coach got an extension last year after a disastrous play-off loss and just had the worst season in history, maybe Crosson deserves a 10 year extension in comparison or then maybe the AD might be a bit more circumspect about these things. I doubt that AD at Cal Poly has any clue about volleyball. I think Crosson could grow as a coach.
as good as 27-3 was, I thought this team had the players to be better. Crosson got out-coached out-prepared big-time yesterday IMO, but then Sealy is the real deal. Let's see what he can do with this new setter.

Unless you have a love of the urban life, you can't beat San Luis Obispo. Scenic, peaceful, proximity to the coast (e.g., Avila Beach, Pismo Beach), great weather, low crime rate. The only negatives are: too far from the nearest affordable airport, not much rain (if you have a garden, you'll understand), and cost of living (hey, it's California).

Sealy just layed out the plan to beat Torrey Van Winden to all the Big west schools, will they follow it?!since none could beat her this year.

They served her short which forced her to come up to the net and not get a full approach to swing.

Could you elaborate on this plan for those of us who had to follow via live stats play by play cuz the video streaming wasn't working. My understanding was to serve short to TVW to make her play the first contact, force her to make a good pass. Also, by TVW taking the first pass gave her less opportunity to set up for a big swing on the outside (also to force her to expend a lot of energy as well).

Decent results for the Big West in the NCAA tournament. Great that 2 schools made it in and both teams did as expected. Both teams were in the running to maybe make a push further, but for this season, not a bad set of results to lose to Illinois in 5 and UCLA in 4.
The problem that I see with the Big West is that it is not preparing the schools for the NCAA tournament. From what I have observed in the past six years with Hawaii in conference is that all the programs (except for maybe Hawaii and Long Beach) go with this smaller, back row, defensive minded kind of teams. Aside from the two programs mentioned, I don't recall any big, shut-down blockers in the front court. I think it hurt Hawaii as it took them some time to adjust to the big block of Illinois. They didn't see any team in the Big West with that kind of size. And likewise, I think Cal Poly didn't have the big blocker to slow down Buechler.
That said, I think next year could be a great year for the Big West. There are only 5 seniors on the Big West all conference team, and they are from Hawaii and Cal Poly. Even the Big West HM team only has 3 seniors out of 10 players selected. A lot of heavy arms on the outside are coming back next year, which means the Big West should have some great terminators that can get out of conference wins.

Who will get All-region tomorrow from the Big West (and be considered eligible for an All-American)? Aside from the more obvious:
Taylor Nelson Emily Maglio Torrey Van Winden Lindsey Ruddins
