Not to whine even more about WCs, but isn't this the kind of situation they are made for? The world's no. 1 player (arguably) wants to play despite having the World Tour Finals a few days later (a situation many players have used as an excuse to skip AVPs in the past). Rather than help her, and the other qualifiers out with a WC, the AVP forces Sarah to play an extra and largely useless day. I don't think it will exhaust Sarah or anything but is a pain in the butt, and seems unnecessary

Could be few reasons - Pavan may have decided late to enter MBO, for instance. I don't really know, though. Skylar is a pretty good player, although I'm not sure how serious she is about pro beach. The one name that really sticks out is Kelly Reeves - she's not playing with Fopma, and Pavan is a vastly better option than Briana Hinga. Reeves/Pavan would be pretty dangerous. But again, there's any number of reasons why that it isn't happening. Yeah, Reeves has a ton of points. Other than a few players, Pavan would be in the Q anyway. Skylar has more points than Pavan. Still, why is it that Caputo and Pavan or say some of the other top Q spots didn't get a wild card? Especially Caputo and Pavan who had a semi-final finish over a pair like Friederich and Jacobson? Wondering how wild cards are determined. There are Q teams with a lot more points than most of the wild cards.

Most of the MBO wild cards are determined by AVP Next points - the spots going to the points leaders from each region. So Pavan wasn't eligible. I think the only non-AVP Next wild card went to Hughes/Claes, and they're going to get picked for a WC every time over a Pavan and (insert name here) pair.

Kewrri walsh going to be there? Silly question??? Any reason why she would be? Kind of puts to rest the rumors that Kerri & April couldn't play in FIVB together and April play on AVP with a different partner when Nicole is doing the same thing. And will be doing the same thing in 2018.

Thanks for the responses, everyone!
So clearly, Branagh signed the AVP contract - that, in itself, seems kind of interesting, no?
And I didn't mean to put Caputo down - she is a very good player and fun to watch, but at the time I wrote that post, I was thinking that it would be easy for Pavan to pull a higher level defender. However, now that I have read your posts and thought about it, why would any of the very top defenders blow off their partner for a one (or two, if you include Chicago) off tourney, other than through a desire to perhaps make some pretty good money over these next two AVP tourneys.
By the way, Guest2 must be just itching for another exciting discussion by stating that Pavan ("arguably") is the best player in the world. Take away Humana-Paredes and she is right back to playing with a Salgado-type player and getting beat by the Lindquist sisters in the quali. Guess we'll see if the best player in the world can carry Caputo to the winner's circle, eh? And yes, I just said "eh" for the Canadian crowd!!!
PS - I am soooo glad that the young Miss Whitmarsh is taking a shot. How horrific that just have been as a young kid, and I still think that Whitty was one of the most tragic volleyball stories ever, especially when he was one of the best and coolest dudes around. I guess you never know what demons folks are fighting, and have to thank your lucky stars every day you wake up healthy and "relatively" happy.

Beavis...From the way it has been portrayed is that Nicole signed on to AVP before Walsh came calling. In NB own words, she didn't feel like there was even a remote possibility that she could get to play with Kerri again, so she signed the contract to play AVP. This senario alone makes what Kerri & Nicole are trying to do (qualify for 2020) very interesting & very difficult unless KW returns to the AVP in 2018 with NB. Which I guess is a possibility if the NVL & AL don't come through on their word. Some are saying Kerris injury is not as bad as first thought ( still out rest of season though). This scenario also seems to indicate the rift between April & Kerri is or was bigger than Just KWs decision not to sign with the AVP. I still feel Kerri & April were still our best shot together internationally even w/o playing AVP together. 2nd paragraph...All I will say on that is I completely agree...Without Melissa, Sarah is in qualifiers. Not even remotely close to best player in the world? Excited fo Jaden Whitmarsh....She would be the ONLY reason Kerri shows up in Manhatten Beach this weekend. They are extremely close, but not sure if even the Whitmarsh girl could bring KW the the MB event.

Donnyw and Iowasurfer - thanks for the kind responses!
I agree - they probably were still our best chance, perhaps with Claes/Hughes becoming a pretty close second in a year or two. I know you think I am a Kerri hater, but I am not - I really wish her the best with her injury recovery, even if I hope that Leonard bites it big time next year. However, I think that you reach a point, especially in your late 30's, where your shoulder simply has so many swings on it that there is very little left to keep it together, even with the best docs and surgeons in the world. I think that many players through the years have had to face that inevitability - Sinjin with his knee, Karch with his shoulder, etc. Very sad, but simply the reality. That is why I don't really see her as ever having the endurance to make a couple years of an injury-free run toward Tokyo, and why I would love to see Summer pick up a Kelly Reeves or a player ready to perhaps breakout like one of the Witt sisters and eventually become one of the top American teams.
Iowasurfer - are you heading to Chicago over Labor Day? Not a bad drive for you from Iowa, and another guy I come to tourneys with will be driving from just outside of Des Moines!

I guess you never know what demons folks are fighting, and have to thank your lucky stars every day you wake up healthy and "relatively" happy. The disrespect for Sarah is ridiculous. She is the best FIVB player on defense (meaning when her team is on defense) and one of the top 5 sideout players. She has made the semis in every non-snow FIVB event she played this year with a partner that has never finished higher than 9th in a big FIVB before. (I think Melissa is great but only a particularly delusional person could assert that Melissa is the driving force in that partnership) Aren't you the same people who said how underrated Heather was and how Sarah would regret dumping her? I am not sure why her natural talent (height) is treated differently than Laura's (jump) or April's (swing) but she is always downgraded because of it. She isn't Ryan Doherty, she has great skills to go with her height

Spot on guest2, can't wrap my head around the lack of defenders picking her up. So she doesn't bring many points to the table, but she is someone you can win with.. Or go with the same partners, get another 5th, maybe a 3rd, etc.

Not even a choice really. Would be absolutely terrible player marketing to choose anyone over USA promising youth.
