Somewhere in the labyrinthine FIVB headquarters there is a wizened old man who puts together formats. His sole governing principle is to make sure wins and losses have no meaning at all It may not seem like much, but having to win only 3 matches vs. 4 in the elimination rounds probably almost doubles your chances of winning gold. In a tourney where the teams are fairly evenly matched, they should fight for every edge they can get. true. Nevertheless I think a double elimination bracket would be the better choice for a tour final. But there are probably some parctical reasons for the pool system (e.g. number of matches, stretching the tournament over several days etc.)

Casey and Theo beat Evandro/Loiola. Good example for how the lack of defense hurts Brazil if they don't score a bunch of aces.

No they beat this team. I knew the Brazil men wouldn't hold their seeds (of course, the pools could all end up tied w everyone beating everyone)

Casey/Theo lose, 18-21, 21-17, 15-10. Theo's passing fell apart in game 3 for an easy Russian win.

The Russians took advantage of Theo down the stretch. likely this will be a three way tie coming out of pool play.
