I believe the culture that Robyn is determined to bring back to Wahine volleyball is that of tough, and long, practices. The kind of practices Dave Shoji held by in the 80', 90's, and early 2000. From reading Cindy's blogs, the last few years, Shoji practice may not have been that tough, and definitely not long at all. From what I can recall, Robyn made a comment when she was an assistant here, how surprised she was on how Dave ran his practices now, stating it was not as tough, or long, as when she played for him. It is that practice, and playing, philosophy that Dave instilled in the Wahine squads back then, is what she is determined to bring back to the Wahine squads from here on out. I understand RAMS's point but Dave Shoji had very successful years from 2000-2016 despite having a different "culture" from what RAMS has in mind. Dave mentioned in a discussion on "Game On" that he had to adjust his coaching style and culture...I can't remember who he said told him he should...he said that "kids are different nowadays...heavy course loads etc. I am not sure there is a correlation to how tough his practices were in later years or not.

I do recall Robyn saying, when she was Dave's assistant, that Wahine practices were not as intense, and/or long, as when she played for him. Something that kind of surprised her.

I was thinking, since the Libero is like the 2nd setter on the floor, what do you people think about having Ma'afala playing that position? Also, I still feel we have not seen the real Casey Castillo, yet. I recall she was one of the best Outside Hitters on the West Coast, until she injured her knee in high school. Playing multiple position for the Wahine did not help her progression, but being able to play one position this year, I am expecting her to make great improvement next year. The great improvement Burns made this year, just proves what kind of coach Angelica is. Expecting Burns to continue her improvement, and will surprise a lot of people next year. She could actually become the Maglio on next year's squad, if she stays healthy, that is. I love Burns, but I am not sure she will ever reach Maglio's level in her time at Hawaii. If she stays for two more seasons she will hopefully stay injury free and continue to improve. I have always believed she had more potential than people thought and will hopefully continue to improve and surprise. Maglio's work ethic to improve (and be a great student) is hard to match. It's a big reason she was able to go from just picking up volleyball in high school and becoming an AA in Beach and indoor in a short period. I think some good quality transfers are needed, but I wouldn't be opposed to a "project" or two like Maglio. She came in very green and her growth has been tremendous from where she started. It would be nice if Sky (who has a similar to Maglio's story) follows suit.

you keep thinking im a troll. no clue why. someone made negative comments about the team the other day yet it was ok for that person. you are too funny. kaleo is from kauai, enough said. yeah he was ivc, uci, not saying he's a bad coach, just saying they aren't as good as other programs, but they all can get there i understand kendra being a hitter, but she didn't hit for the last 3 years. the thing i find interesting is some of you keep praising robyn but keep trying to coach by saying who should play, who shouldnt. coaching is a big part of elite programs. although they are not there YET, there's no reason they can't get there I could kick your ass just for making that comment!!! I'll help You!

Question, when is the next signing date? Also, are transfers allowed to sign at any time, or do they have to adhere to the signing date?

I remember when his coaching style had to change.....it was the year(s) after Kelli Cordray left. If I am remembering correctly, a bunch of Wahine transferred or left completely. He then realized that he couldn't be the hard ass he always was and had to adjust his style. As someone from Ah-Mow Santos' era, it is somewhat nice and refreshing to see young adults (god, I'm having issues saying I'm old,, but I am) get the tough love.

Based on Dave Shoji's twitter feeds, he has been traveling in Europe watching his sons play volleyball. I know what he's going through. He's in Phase I of Retirement: feeling lost and looking for something to do. Initial reaction is to stay close to the kids, develop a deeper relationship with them, play with the grandkids. I went through the same phase.
Phase II: Realization that you're a nuisance to the kids. You're hanging around them too much. They're trying to build a life of their own with their own family and don't need meddling anymore. Transition period between Phase I and Phase III. Here, you just stay at home and watch soaps or all the TV shows you missed on DVD/Netflix or movies from 2007-17 that you missed or perhaps go on several cruises. In my case, playing video games non-stop. In this phase, you don't want to see your kids anymore. In fact, I don't even want to spend the holidays with them because they'd be interfering with my video gaming.
Phase III: Finally! Discovery of my life's purpose -- or, at the very least, the purpose for the twilight period of my life. This is where you don't want to see your kids anymore because you're too busy trying to accomplish your purpose before things go downhill. Dave is not there yet. I think he should do what Chris MacLachlin does. I've noticed that MacLachlin's mental processes have been slowing down. Not as sharp as he once was. Having seen Shoji a few times on TV in the halftime and postgame segments, I think he would make an excellent color commentator. He's certainly eloquent and knowledgeable enough.

Question, when is the next signing date? Also, are transfers allowed to sign at any time, or do they have to adhere to the signing date? The regular signing period usually opens in April. That’s for incoming freshmen. IDK if transfers technically “sign,” but they can be announced by the school once they’re admitted.

I know Emily won’t be in the 2018 season but just wanted to share this new video from YouTube the senior spotlight for Emily Maglio. She says she wants to play indoor internationally and then beach, as well as go back to school after. Can’t wait to see her career professionally !

I always liked the way she changes the pitch in her voice in mid-sentence. She goes from one octave at the start of a sentence and, before you know it, she's three or four octaves higher. So funny.

I like the idea proposed by Wolfgang and a few of Cindy’s posters – if the Wahine can’t get a decent transfer, then look to the talent on the beach team. Switch the scholarship to indoor and make an agreement with Jeff to let them play both. Several posters are mentioning Lea Monkhouse.

Ah Mow and Hall have both stated they want to field teams that don't have crossover UNLESS it's a unique situation. I don't see "beefing up the indoor team" as a situation to warrant any movement. Ah Mow has three scholarships to give - there's got to be players out there that want to sign with UH and her and her staff need to find them.

I would be really surprised if Ah Mow is unable to find a quality transfer or foreign recruit and had to resort to players on the beach team....

How about these three: Abaji, MH from Texas - currently benching, and #2 MH recruit Oneal coming in next year, with Redshirt Butler who was #2 recruit last year also waiting in the wings Ford, OH from USC - doesn't start anymore, or at least not full-time, and #12 OH recruit Schirmer coming in next year, who passes very well...something USC needs Akiu, L from Texas Tech - heard her scholarship was for three years, and she's coming in on her fourth. Local girl doing amazing things at TT.

The best Xmas present Robyn can receive is to have Lexi Sun decide to transfer over to the Wahine.
