The first season of the Tamas era is over and I think most will agree it's been a successful start. I'm already looking forward to 2018 and even greater success on the court. With all the talent returning, Illinois should compete for the Big 10 title and is poised to make a deep run in the tournament. I don't anticipate any transfers coming in, but I do expect more competition for the OH positions. Am really looking forward to Kuyava-Deberg, Van Dyke and Hallowell developing and competing for OH positions. Here is the roster for 2018:
Setter Jordyn Poulter, 6'2", Sr. Diana Brown, 6'0", Fr. Kylie Bruder, 5'11", R. Fr
Outside Hitters Jacqueline Quade, 6'2", Jr. Beth Prince, 6'3, R. R. Jr. Emily Hollowell, 6'3", R. Fr.? Megan Cooney, 6'4", So. Kylie Kuyava-Deberg, 6'4", So. Marijke Van Dyke, 6'2", So
Middle Hitters Ali Bastianelli, 6'3", Sr. Blayke Hranicka, 6'0", Sr. Tyanna Omazic, 6'2", So.
DS/Libero Annika Gereau, 5'8", Jr. Morgan O'Brien, 5'8", So Carolyn Welsh, 5'8, Jr. Lexie Smith, 5'7", Fr. Emmaline Walters, 5'7", Fr. Taylor Kuper, 5'8", Fr.
Go Illini!

The current state of our recruits. Does anyone know how they are ranked? Holzman is highly regarded, but is probably not going to be used as a middle. I really don't know much about the rest.
2019 Kyla Swanson, 6’3”, MB (Nebraska) Rylee Hinton, 6’2” MB () Ellie Holzman, 6’2” MB (Louisiana)
2020 Maddie Whittington, 6’3” MB (Minnesota)
2021 Brooke Mosher, 5’11” OH (Wisconsin)

Good catch - thanks (Prince, not Price).

Has Diana Brown mentioned anything of taking a redshirt year under Poulter’s wing? If I remember correctly, I feel like I heard really good things about her.

We got through the year with only one able-bodied setter on the roster. Had Jordyn been unable to play for any reason, a great season would have become a disaster. Next year we will have three setters on the roster. It will be interesting to learn how Coach Tamas plans to deal with the situation. Setter is probably the position that substitutes the least on a college roster.

Bruder will be post op 1year this summer, so it's probably closer to 2.5 setters with Brown acclimating and running the scout team with Bruder. 3 whole bodies yes, but both essentially freshman learning their hitters and system.

Does that mean Bruder and Brown are each 3/4 of a setter?

I will really have my eye on Illinois next year. I became a huge Jordyn Poulter and Chris Tamas fan this year. Poulter is the most impressive setter I've seen in a long, long time. And with her blocking I think she has massive potential in the international game.
I know that Donnelly, the excellent libero, was a senior this year, but is Illinois losing any other significant contributors?
Penn State, Michigan State, and Purdue will likely be down next year due to graduation losses, unless they have some major guns hidden on the bench or coming in as freshmen or transfers. This could open up some room for Illinois to break into the top 4 teams in the conference (Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Minnesota will also be very good).

Going into 2017, I thought Kuyava-DeBerg was going to have a big debut year. She's a very similar player to Loberg @ Wisconsin. What was her story this year?

Kuyava-Deberg has a lot of upside and should contend for a starting position next year. Excited to have her as an Illini.

I think Kuvaya-Deberg is going to have to wait her turn. After Prince, Quade, and Cooney she's a solid option at the pin as a backup. She needs to have a good spring and work on being a bit quicker in transition.

I expect they will all have a good and competitive spring. Prince and Quade showed signs of brilliance, but were AWOL in a few matches. If Deberg (or Hallowell or Van Dyke) can provide more consistency as well as a 6-rotation option, they have a short at starting. Don't get me wrong, I love Prince and Quade and both have All-American potential, but neither had the type of season that cemented them as starters next year. With another year of practice in the gym, I believe there will be a health competition for the OH positions next year.
