I am not totally surprised the U$C wants a change in their program. This is one of their premier teams and they expect to compete for national titles every years. Given their location and recruiting base that expectation isn't totally nuts. They probably felt rightly that they couldn't commit to Haley for another 5 years. The manner of the firing was probably driven by the lawyers. I am sure that U$C wanted a friendly parting of the ways and would have been willing to let Haley resign. But once Haley starts to threaten litigation then the lawyers take over. Haley has every right to sue. I have no idea if he was a case. But you can't both sue and expect a fond farewell. I think this make some sense. Maybe USC wanted Haley to leave, asked him to resign, and he refused. Can any of you think of a different way for that situation to play out? This may or may not be true. He may have been asked to resign but felt he could do the job for another year or so and maybe wanted to leave on his terms. They may have had to force him to leave while giving him the opportunity to resign first. I agree that Swan would have consulted lawyers regarding the termination. There are some situations, I'm sure, where an immediate release of a coach is warranted. In this case, however, the fact that the AD could not wait one day until firing, seems particularly suspect and could support Haley's case that this was "personal" and ageist.

bigfan, Did you call this? I thought he would be there until Lanier left. Firing him on the day Of National Championship with all his coaching peers around at he coaching convention is a BRUTAL WAY to do it. There was clearly a lack of decorum. There might be other details we are not fully aware of that forced the announcement. Are you going to apply for the job?

Mick mentioned problems, but he naturally didn't mention the problems he caused. You think other coaches don't cause problems? Rose has never caused a problem of any kind at PSU? Cook at Nebraska? You still don't take a giant dump on a coach with a bush-league press release hours before the national title game while the coach isn't even in town. This isn't the move of a leader. It's a small-minded move of someone who stumbled into a position of power based on a certain level of sports celebrity from the 1970's. I don't if and how JC and Russ "cause problems." Of course, they both run better programs than Mick, so maybe they get a little more leeway. At any rate, I was just amused at Mick's rather blasé mention of friction with Donna (SWA), without mentioning why the antagonism existed in the first place. Not that I would really expect him to do in a public interview, of course. And I'll freely admit that I'm having a hard time coming up with a whole lot of sympathy for Mick.

Terrible timing on USC's part, probably trying to bury it under NCAA Final coverage.

SC might find itself settling on Option D , E or F for a coach if they aren't smart.

Mick is going to do himself a disservice making this public. He may get the old guard VB community support, but claiming agism just smells like a white guy entitlement.. Congratulations on interjecting race into the topic for no sensible reason.

Wow. Shocking. I don't like the tone of that press release. I hope this was totally Haley's decision. The guy came just one or two lucky bounces from taking his team to the Finals. If it was his decision, the press release reads differently, unfortunately. I’m just baffled at what’s been happening the last couple years. AD’s and players have no knowledge of what it takes, yet are calling all the shots. Terrible for the game and the profession. There are a lot of good coaches either out of the college game or looking to get out ASAP. Something needs to change.
