The injury to Van Winden was a shock to me. I'm just a fan and definitely no expert but didn't realize you could get a serious concussion from being hit by a ball. I was very confused, thinking she had run into a player or hit something while diving for a ball and couldn't believe a coach would practice that hard and take that kind of risk with a star player this close to the tourney. I will have to check out volleymags article I guess. Very tough break for the player and team.

Yes,... hindsight is 20-20,...but, agree something like should never happen. With a two week wait before the start of the postseason,...light workouts (no scrimmages) and watching game film would have been less of a risk, particular for the six main starters. Pretty sure coach Crosson has put that into his memory bank for the future.

Stop making statements about things you have no knowledge of.

Players get concussions when hit by the ball. It occasionally happens in games. It occasionally happens in practice. Maybe someday wearing helmets (like Rostratter did) will be more common in VB.

Thanks Mike,...makes a lot of sense. (soon to be mandatory,...am sure) Maybe just during practice before your team is to play in a postseason match,...hint,...hint. NTL, not be taken lightly,...a head concussion is/can be a very serious matter.

You just can't help yourself, can you? And,...you can? You have twice made the insinuation that how the coach ran practice resulted in the injury to their star player. You clearly have no idea what happened, or how their practice was run. You clearly have no idea how practices are run in general. You should just stop making statements about things you know nothing about. Injuries happen. It sucks, but they happen. Cal Poly couldn't over come it. Since it was a concussion, there was no guarantee she would have even been able to play the next day, or the next week.

Cal Poly couldn't over come it. Since it was a concussion, there was no guarantee she would have even been able to play the next day, or the next week. Well,...first of all something happened during practice that resulted in a concussion to CAL POLY's star player,...Torrey Van Winden. This was reported by the University and is a fact. Someone mentioned it was while playing in a practice game environment,...Torrey was hit in the face or head with the ball. Apparently, hard enough to cause a concussion. OK,...so what is your problem? My point (and others),...this accident could have been avoided,...possibly. 1) By merely having light warm-up drills during practice (prior to start of postseason). 2) Mike mentioned, wearing some form of head gear. There are four players that make up the core of this team,...Torrey being one of those, IMO. Losing anyone of the four during the season to an injury either in practice or a match would've (and obviously did) hurt POLY's chances for win(s). What happened to Torrey is a reminder (unfortunately learned the hard way),...that every time you step on the court you are vulnerable. My comments are being made to, hopefully, prevent this kind of situation from happening in the future. What kind of constructive ideas can you suggest?

Can you tell us what they were working on that led to her concussion and how it happend exactly? Was it during game like reps? Blocked reps? Was she on the court? Off the court?

Or national team member Kayla Banwarth who got hit in the head by a ball from Akinradewo in practice? I never understand when announcers laugh at or joke about facials. I know most of them are inconsequential but some can cause concussions. And you can't tell which those will be based on how hard the ball is hit either.

This is a more dangerous sport than I realized.

People suggesting lighter practices clearly don't coach. I've seen girls get concussions when they aren't even playing on the court. Running to shag a ball after they hit and a girl hits them as they are shagging. A crappy dig that gets shanked into the head of a teammate. TVW jumps well, could just have been trying to block a hitter in a controlled environment and the hitter could get her square in the head since she is up high enough.
Insinuating anything about what the coach was doing at practice is crazy. Playing sports means there is ALWAYS a chance to get injured. Nobody could have foreseen this happening no matter what style of practice Crosson was choosing to do. It's sad that it happened on such a large stage, but it is merely an incredibly unlucky event, which happens in life sometimes.
