If Cal Poly cannot bring in a Hillard type then they should see if Micky Haley would be interested for a short term solution. I hear USC has cut some of their players so Haley could possibly bring a few in. Will be a very interesting and important hire for Poly. who got cut? I heard that there was a cut and have have several names but I do not want to put names on a message board until it becomes public. It is expected that players would be cut when a new coach has evaluated the roster and wants to bring in their players.

Why would the players transfer? They just finished a great season, and only had heartbreak at the end due to a concussion to their top hitter. They only lose two players and still have a great team with their star hitter, who is the key to the rest of their offense. Sometimes its not about the success of the programs. Some players go to the school based on the coaches they wanted to play for. Look at North Carolina, many of them transferred out after the assistants left and the latest transfer Ava Bell followed Eve to Tennessee. It happens even before they arrive at schools, Hailey Dirrigl was committed to Arizona State when Jason Watson was there and then he got the head coach position at Arkansas and she then followed him there. Also Oregon had four transfers just after this season, which was one of their best seasons since 2012. That is about playing time and if you look at Cal Poly, pretty much the same group of players got playing time. And not everyone gets to play beach and indoors, so the reserves can't bank on playing time in beach if they don't get any in indoor. Plus when coaches leave, their chance to transfer is easier since they are released from their scholarship (not sure if it is any more easier with the new transfer rules).

actually, there might be a long-shot way to get Tamas hire his wife she's a volunteer assistant at Illinois. Poly could pay Tamas head coaching salary, and then pay his wife as the associate coach, they could get to $200 k that way of course I don't think that is even likely to happen, he probably makes a bit more than that at Illinois, and just got to the final 4, pretty easy to recruit with that and Poly's football and basketball programs are in the tank, which probably doesn't give the AD much wiggle room to entice on salary plus, possible there is a buyout still, if I'm the AD at Poly, I have to call Tamas to ask the question about a possible package deal they interviewed Hilliard at San Diego last go around, not sure that Poly would be able to meet his demands, but never know at some point Hilliard may want that head gig, and when you look at next year's line-up, it's a great situation for any incoming coach
Interesting you mentioned the "buyout".
When you read CAL POLY's post announcing Sam Crosson's departure, they say he resigned before accepting the new coaching job.
Question,..."does that waive paying a "buyout" by the offering school or does it depend on terms in the original contract?"

I doubt he even had a buyout
The only buyout would have been his contract guarantees
The resignation is just a formality, he has to resign before he accepts the cal job formally. He can't formally be the coach of two schools

Busy day for coaching announcements. This one makes good sense. The players who are there should continue without a huge upheaval of their system.

That certainly didn't take long,...congrat's to Ms. Walters.
We will soon find out who was the real brains of this program.
Nothing has changed,...CAL POLY still needs to recruit bigger, stronger & more talented players. (Hopefully, head coach Walters will make that a priority before start of practice in 2019).

Cal Poly is a public school. Isn't there a process they have to go through to hire the next head coach? Like post the opening publicly for a period of time to give all interested candidates a chance to apply?
Great for Cal Poly for cutting thru the red tape. I'm just wondering how they did it?

Not sure,...maybe saying "interim" HC for 30 days would be appropriate. Of course, she was already the 'associate head coach', if that matters.

There is no "law" that requires a job at a California public university to be formally advertised prior to being filled. There are formal campus policies and commitments to diversity in employment that promote and may require vacancy announcements and open recruitments, but they also allow for exceptions. Generally, head coaches may be hired as exceptions to the normal recruiting process because of the urgency of making a hire, and then any assistant positions will be hired using a formal recruitment process. In the case Walters and Cal Poly, as a current employee, she could theoretically or conceivably simply be "reassigned" to the head coach job with a change in salary and classification (although she is likely in a faculty position and the new job is a management position).

Let the recruiting begin,...from the beginnings! Who will first year head coach Caroline Walters select as her first scholie?
Certainly, send a message to all watching this new era,...how CAL POLY in 2019 will start. IMO, coach Walters could have as many as two new scholarship players.
