No one probably knows, except, the players/coaches that were there.
Bottom line maybe it is time players start wearing some kind of protective head gear,...at least in practice. (Concussions are a very serious thing...can cause permanent brain damage.)
I realize it is not very fashionable,...but you're seeing it more and more,...pitchers in softball,...women lacrosse.

Is there any evidence that the headgear prevents concussions or lessens their impact? I haven't looked in a few years but the last time I checked, there was no evidence that they helped at all.

I believe evidence has shown it can reduce the impact so yes, head gear could help. That said, you can't prevent all injuries from happening. If you don't want to get hurt, don't play sports. If you want to be the first coach to require all athletes to wear head gear, by all means go for it. Jake, you should watch the southpark episode Sarcastaball, feel like you would buy into.

Any links or suggestions on where to find the info? I know back in Dec 2013 the NCAA issued a statement saying that there was no evidence that helmets prevented concussions. From the report: "It is important to note the lack of clinical evidence supporting the value of the soft or padded headgear in the prevention of sports-related concussions. . . . Current design and recommended use of these devices fail to address the proposed mechanism of concussive injury, that being rotational acceleration and deceleration forces acting on the brain." www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/Position%2BStatement.pdfThat's pretty old at this point but when I googled, I didn't find anything that showed that helmets helped at all. Here's something from this August from Volleyball Mag: “(Helmets are) not preventing movement inside the skull, which is really what happens, the movement of the brain causes the shearing or stretching of neurons and that’s what ultimately causes a concussion. Second of all, it can give a player a false sense of security.” volleyballmag.com/concussions-science-081318/I think that they are hoping to develop something but I haven't seen anything yet.

Unrelated to what everyone else is talking about, but congratulations to Torrey Van Winden and Adlee Van Winden for getting All-Pacific North Region honors! I definitely knew that Torrey Van Winden would be on the last, but I'm pleasantly surprised that they included Adlee Van Winden as well. The Van Winden sisters have definitely left their mark on this program, and Torrey will get to carry the Van Winden legacy next year too!

I would be a little concerned that there may be some CYA going on with respect to helmets. They don't want helmets to be required, so probably nobody has looked really hard at them scientifically.
It seems clear that helmets do in fact reduce brain injuries in many other activities, so it's unclear why volleyball would be an exception.
It's also clear that helmets do not eliminate any danger. Football players wear helmets, and they still get concussions. I had a concussion from a crash on a racetrack, and I was wearing a helmet.
The real damage is done by the brain moving inside the skull, this is true. But the impulse from the collision might be softened by the helmet if the helmet has some give to it. Or it might not be.

Congrats to the Van Winden sisters and the entire CAL POLY team for placing two players from the Big West Conference on the All-Pacific Region. The CAL POLY Women's VB proud tradition will live on into 2019 and beyond.

The CAL POLY Beach VB Team's roster for 2019 has not hit the presses yet.
But, soon the indoor team's players will be transitioning to outdoor sand. Many new ONLY sand players will blend with the indoor players for one awesome National Championship team.

Can't believe TVW was named to just Honorable Mention AA. Thought she was at least 3rd team, possibly 2nd team.

Her injury as well as Kayla Lund’s may have cost them a spot on one of the teams. That’s a shame. What a great season for both programs and athletes.

A boggling question one can only speculate.
But,...a sweet 16 (even final 8) opportunity not out of realm of possibilities!!!

Is a p5 school hiring him away? Good idea to bail before van winden leaves and he is back to being mediocre.
