Who do we think Chaim Schalk will end up with? I could see him landing a decent blocker (Cook?) who is willing to stay domestic and place high in the AVP events. Has to be Ricardo, unless Doherty decides to focus domestically to a much greater degree. When is Chaim eligible to play for the US internationally? Is it next year? I thought it was a 2 year sit-out which would mean August 2019.

I wonder if some of the opposition to trials may have been male defenders trying to avoid getting their partners poached at the last minute? Not sure Chaim/Phil wouldnt be the US' best option in 2020, depending on how much Nick and Phil respectively fall off between now and then

If Chaim is seriously US's best defender in 2020 this country is worse off than I thought. He's a good player but at the FIVB level he's only that and nothing more.

I think Phil is loyal to Nick and they are committed to riding it out together. I would love to see a scenario where Taylor and Phil end up partnering because my head immediately goes to what Taylor could be by 2020 as Nick will probably decline slowly.

Phil mentioned this on the Sandcast episode. Their plan is 2020. Phil and Nick. 2020.

I kind of like the possibility of seeing a bunch of partner switches on the men's side this year. We will see who clicks together and who is healthy and who steps up. Then next year the teams should settle down a bit as the qualification process begins.
Other than Phil and Nick has any other team announced their intention to stick together through 2020?

I believe not. All the other partner switch ups (on the men’s side) this year seem to be just testing waters for the 2018 season.

Sure, but what evidence do we have that any of the US defenders are anything more than that? The only one who I would say has proved anything recently is Hyden who is 150 years old. Nick has won a lot with Phil, but I think Chaim, Taylor, Hyden and maybe Casey would all win with Phil at close to the same rate. If Nick keeps getting the job done, no chance those guys break up, but Nick is small and old. Who knows when Father Time becomes a factor for a player like him

Who knows when Father Time becomes a factor for a player like him We have about as much evidence from our guys as we have with seen Schalk with his results to be able to safely say he'll never be much more than he is right now. Internationally he has a couple to 20 seasons, 2 other marginally ok seasons and a bunch of not very good reasons. In watching him on the AVP last year he is a pretty good player, but he didn't do anything to make him stand out among other American defenders. IMHO unless he gets lucky with partners, he is going to have a real uphill battle because he'll come in with 0 points and will have an extremely short time to hurry up and get results with no margin for error to not qualify. Schalk IMO is a really solid player, but he doesn't do anything to make me warrant he'll be a part of a great US team. If he is in the mix and ends up qualifying, I wouldn't expect that team to be any threat in any way to medal, but really that may be the case for the other US team not named Phil regardless if it's Schalk or somebody else.
