I think I’m going to have to amend this a little bit... if we’re talking about a surefire shot of making the tournament we’re going to have to leave the committee with very little excuses to exclude us. With the parity being just insane in the B1G this year I think not only are the top wins a must (thank goodness for that first Northwestern win!) but I think we’re going to have to throw Michigan St. and Ohio St. into the top as well. The Purdue matches would be nice to steal, and if we are going to grab a marquee win somewhere we’ll have two chances with them, but MSU and OSU are probably necessary to solidify us as honestly deserving. The problem is RPI. Looking at the RPI futures, Iowa went down after losing to Illinois and beating Northwestern. I'm not sure another Michigan State win will help much with RPI. Really need to beat Purdue at least once and then pick up at least one win against Ohio State/Minnesota/Nebraska/Wisconsin. That would probably put the RPI into a good enough spot to get an at-large bid. Oh yeah, I’m not thinking another win over MSU will help our RPI much, but a loss against them will kill our chances with the committee. When they decide between the last 2-3 B1G teams I’m convinced they’ll be looking at reasons to keep them out, which is why they omitted Maryland and Iowa last year and then turned around and said “sorry but you were the next two in... try again next year!” We’re not in a position where we can afford losses to non-ranked B1G teams and the committee will just turn a blind eye. I think any loss to the bottom half would have to be made up with two wins against the top half.

Fun fact: If Iowa does manage to stave off the bottom/middle of the pack, and can sweep through the remainder of their Rutgers, Northwestern, Maryland, Indiana, MSU and OSU matches, this would be the first time since 1994* we mark double digit wins in the B1G.
*excluding 2000, where we finished 11-9 not because we won 11 matches but because OSU was forced to forfeit their wins from the ‘99-‘00 seasons due to violations, which included two ‘00 matches against Iowa

Simply fantastic!!!! What a win! Hoye was basically unstoppable. Kelly is just a back row monster. And Orr...holy cats! She is just so athletic and truly has taken the reins of this team. Crowd was SO loud there at the end. Love it! Let's all soak this in...it's been a long time coming! GO HAWKS!!

This was a hallmark win for the Hawkeyes and a payoff for the process Bond has put this program through. You could really see it coming and I couldn't be happier for the fanbase. It makes the B1G stronger overall to see improvement from the traditional bottom tier. Now keep fighting Hawks and don't let up. The season is still youngish, don't give the Committee any excuse to leave you out this year.

We have been through a lot so seeing this hard work on the part of the coaches and players pay off is definitely rewarding! Thought the post-match interviews with Louis and Hoye provided insight into this mindset: that they are truly now realizing that they "belong" in the conversation with top teams because they know they can compete at that level. To your point, they absolutley MUST keep focused, though. Season is absolutely still WAY young! Leaving no excuses to the Committee is spot on! Thanks for your post and GO HAWKS!

Absolutely agree that we need to give the committee zero excuses to exclude us. We have @rutgers/Purdue(Home) on the docket this week. I don’t care how it’s done but we need to leave New Jersey with a W. There is ridiculous parity in the B1G this season and I refuse to feel poorly about a win whether it’s a sweep or a tight five setter (like Northwestern).
The last 3 times Purdue has walked into Carver Hawkeye we have won twice and lost in 5 once. If we can protect our arena and walk away with a win in that match... it would be unbelievable.
I thought last night we looked organized, we looked gritty, and we looked like a tournament team. I love Bond and the team’s emphasis on focus. Hope they celebrated well last night because I’m sure they’ll be right back in the gym and on track for this week tomorrow!

If anyone would like a master class in how (as fans of amateur athletes) not treat your team, cue Texas: volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/75137/4-texas-kansas-10-ctAnyway, two more days then on to Purdue! They remain a bit of an enigma. They’ve dropped a set each to Northwestern, Maryland, and Michigan State (their only wins thus far). I’d be very surprised if they were able to walk into Carver and sweep but perhaps they’ll be out to make a statement and they certainly will not underestimate us. I expect and hope for a competitive and exciting match!

I thought about this match (Iowa v Purdue) long and hard in PTW. What finally made me pick Iowa was that Purdue has a higher high and lower low than Iowa, and Purdue is most dangerous at home and has a tendency to play poorly on the road against a team they are equal to or slightly favored over.
