It seems the coach can even conduct a campus tour during camps/clinics so long as there are no recruiting discussions?

They should’ve implemented all the measures that lacrosse did, including no phone calls or emails until junior year.

A idle mind is the devils workshop...................these people who passed this have way too much time on their hands. PURE NONSENSE it is.

So apparently softball DID get added to the Lacrosse Rule. It was not originally in the proposed legislation, but was accepted as a "friendly legislation" because the NFCA requested it was added in. FOR SOFTBALL: Absolutely no recruiting discussion regardless of in person or via email/phone/social media before Junior year. web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/search/proposalView?id=102291

So, A freshman PSA can attend camp of said college, tour around campus on her own, get back home a day later and call the coach of said college and have conversations with? Correct. And they can verbally offer a scholarship, and the kid can verbally commit. I don't think this lessens people committing as freshmen or through like April of their sophomore years. Kids who would've committed in the summer before their junior year might hold out for the junior year official visits now, but then there will be a mad rush of visits, offers and deadlines right in the middle of their high school season (and the college season).

Postives for Student-Athletes/Families: -Earlier Official Visits (saves on expensive unofficial visits) -Hopefully time to develop to make sure a good college fit (always makes me sad when I see athletes that no longer fit their original commitment) -Time to just be a kid and enjoy playing the game with their teammates instead of worrying about the recruiting work they have to do (as much). -Be formally recruited at a time when you have more of an idea of who your teammates will be and better chance the coaching staff will still be there.
Negatives for Student-Athletes/Families: -Inability to get a face-to-face connection and build a better relationship with staff/team. -Inability to visit campuses/coaches when traveling for tournaments/vacations, although can still visit campus. -Intermediaries more involved rather than investigating on your own (although phone calls help this). Too much power to too few.
Positives for Coaches/Staff -More time to evaluate and watch the progress of recruits and hopefully later commitments -Better work/life balance in regard to family time. Unofficial visits can really take A LOT of time, so eliminating the young kids that "might" fit your program later I see as a big plus...focus will become on kids you want to offer a scholarship or roster spot. I think many have left the profession due to the overwhelming time spent not just recruiting (evaluating) on the road, but the heavy recruiting responsibilities when at home.
Negatives for Coaches/Staff -Hurts those programs that want to outwork other coaches and be available and those that don't have the funding for lots of official visits. -Unable to see how kids fit with their team's culture as early. -A lot of distractions for coach/team during season fitting in junior's 48-hour official visits when PSA's can fit it in instead of a planned anytime weekend only for committed/signed seniors. Tours, meetings, most will now be done during the season of playing weekends.
Just my initial thoughts, but we'll see how it plays out. I personally used to like the days when we actually offered Seniors when they came on their official visit fall of senior year. Maybe we offered in the summer, but the "yes" came usually after or during the visit.

With communication still allowed, offers and deadlines will still be made to freshmen and sophomores.

Yep, that's what I am afraid of...but with time?? Maybe more Freshman/Sophomores won't feel the pressure to commit since they haven't got to have the student-athlete experience yet? My wishful thinking. :-)

And now schools have to triple their budgets for official travel. Good for a school like Nebraska who has a robust recruiting budget. Might not make a huge difference though since their recruiting pool is small. This will definitely hurt mid-level teams who don't have the budget but have a big pool of PSAs to filter through.

Am I missing something? The major change I see is that they are going to allow official visits one year earlier. And that they are banning coaches from escorting you around during unofficial visits. Other than that, it bans active recruiting at camps but the coach could still call the club and tell the club that they are REALLY interested in Jane Doe after seeing her at the camp. If you think this isn't a big deal then yes you are missing something. To make an informed decision you HAVE to speak with the coach and the players. It is asinine to think you can make a decision like this without that information. They say they want to align the recruiting timeline with the rest of the student body, but are they banning regular students from contacting schools? NO. This does nothing expect make the decision that much harder for prospective athletes.

I'm trying to be positive and hope long term it does slow down the process. Truly these kids don't need to make this decision so early, but I'm also a realist and know right now it is going to just be a MESS transitioning from the current system.

Typical not making sense. Don't confuse me "not making sense" with you "not understanding". Typical position of the ignorant.
