Walk-Ons and kids on partial scholarships can elect to redshirt or not since that is their choice. The coach can't obviously force a player to redshirt, but they won't offer the redshirt if they want to cycle the scholarship. I'm not convinced that Hanawahine is better than Gong/Okino/Whoever else we have. It will definitely be a battle back there. I would feel better about things if they had a Libero transfer in.This!

Is Riley Wagoner the first Gatorade Player of the Year in Volleyball to sign with the Wahine, outside of Hawaii that is? If she is, Great get by Robyn.

I think it’s probably hard to say one way or another if Kyra is better than Okino but I do think Kyra is better than Gong. Hanawahine have played behind some very good liberos at UO so she was “victimized “ by being on team with very good liberos. Even her heraled teammate Camryn Tastad(who was a third team UA HS All American)had to leave to find PT. Hanawahine has a pretty good volleyball background but was in over her head at a P5 school. Felt if she came to UH, she could have been very good. Okino is doing well because she is damn smart. She was only honorable mentioned all state so she was definitely under the radar type who worked hard to get to where she is. I do think Kyra(who was 2 times all ILH/ all State) have more volleyball skills. We shall see but I am glad Hanawahine is on the team.

She will add competition to the DS/L position, making all 3 of them (Gong, Hanawahine, and Okino) better.

Does anyone know if Robyn is looking at any of the available transfers? Looking at the transfer list on VT, it doesn’t look like there are many setters to choose from. School have started so I doubt UH will find anybody at this time. Robyn is kind of in a tough situation. Not a lot of top quality setters available. Those who become available later probably would not walk on....unless it’s a local girl coming home. She just might have to use a scholarship for an average setter. Other options is to go JC, go international or convince some local HS setter who have no offer....to walk on.

I don't think Hawaii was expecting a high quality transfer to come in as a setter. It's great if there was interest but it's hard to get a "top caliber setter" when that player knows that she will be competing with a 3 year starter for playing time.

There's also a chance transfers could come in after the spring semester. Lots of athletes finish out the full year before transferring. Or perhaps there are some upcoming grad transfers or players who want to finish the year playing for the school's beach team.
I'd expect the back up setter next year will be an upperclassmen transfer. And then Ah Mow-Santos will pick up another setter for 2021.

Grad transfer is definitely not the answer. Robyn would then have to do what she is doing now......go find a backup setter again after next season. Waste time doing it two years in a row.
Best case scenario is find one with at least two years available. One year to back up Noreen this coming season and one season to either get the starting job or back up Kate Lang in 2020. One year setters are kind of a waste because they will come in so late(August) and expect to get the timing down with all her new teammates. Not an easy thing to do. Even if she gets her timing with her teammates quickly , in a couple of months, that setter will use up all her eligibility and will never be seen from again.
Much better to train a setter who could pay dividends the next year too. Hope Robyn and staff are searching worldwide for somebody willing to come.

To me grad transfers/1 year of eligibiliy left for a setter is not the option, however any other position i'm find with and its always a gamble when bringing in these types of players when you have no idea what they bring to the team, UNLESS they are a proven player or AA. Also Being a setter you have to be able to connect with a hitters and coming in couple months prior to the season starting would not work.

All three play VB and BB.
The one on the left is going to be OSU's PG for the next four years.
Four straight conference titles in both sports.
