Hentz was classic in the post match interview: "my block was amazing tonight. I was able to set up around them and they made my job so much easier"
The combo of the Cardinal block and Hentz keeping the ball off the floor had to be frustrating for BYU. When is the last tme a top 4 seed reached the national semifinal and hit negative for the match?
I was there and then watched again when I got home.
1. When your first contact is wayward then you cannot run the offense as fast as you'd like. There were any number of flurries of competency for BYU when their passing was good. At the start of the match it was Stanford who couldn't get into system. But once the midpoint of the sets were reached they sputtered. 2. Your setter's options then become limited and and the opponent's MB gets to double up on the OH. MN sometimes ran gap sets to the MB on passes that only got to the 3 meter line. That kind of play with sets NOT going to the pin can open hitting lanes that aren't there on higher sets to the pin. I didn't see any teams doing this. 3. BYU exhibited a flaw similar to what I saw last week in the MN ORE match. When things aren't working you HAVE to make adjustments. If you aren't beating the block then you need to work the edges of it. They subbed out Robinson, who really struggled, but her replacement didn't seem to have much effect. 4. As noted upthread the COY did not change her rotation in set 2. 5. re. RJP and her dominance vs TX vs her suffocation at Stanford's hands... she also was slow to change her attack angles. Her 'broad shoulders' after Miller's injury had made her a sentimental POY candidated, but now.... 6. Hentz' digs allowed Stanford to be WAY more effective in transition. Much too often BYU was only able to keep the ball in play in transition. They couldn't buy a kill.
Haven't looked at the stats but it felt like a good chunk of Stanford's role players outperformed their season average. It's likely that none of the BYU squad did. Game balls to Hentz, Alade, & Fitzmorris. If these three perform at a similar level on Saturday the Huskers will have no chance.
The Target Center may have sold out but there were plenty of empty seats in the lower bowl. The DJ, for me, was annoying with relentless loud interludes between points. I thought the crowd was rooting for BYU. Not as loud as on their home court of course.
We all wish for competitive matches, but we sometimes don't get what we wish for.

Thanks for sharing your insights and observations. I agree with your insinuation that Heather should have spun the dial on her lineup. If you're hitting negative, might as well try some different match-ups. She is a great coach, and completely deserving of COY. Great rapport with players; develops players well (does more with less); rumored to be great recruiter (jury still out). Often in-match adjustments can be hardest aspect to master. Still, I give her credit for subbing out a struggling hitter, and for moving the serve-receive configuration around. From her mini-interview after 2nd set, she seemed pretty overwhelmed, which is understandable. I hope to see them back in the final four in the near future.

Oh good, the guy that destroyed Hodson's career is gonna do some commentary between matches You keep on saying that, but you are so far off base. Hodson's career started to go downhill due to her injuries and her mom before even coming to Stanford. Her career came to an end due to Haley and her mom while at Stanford. Her reputation started to go downhill due to the lawsuit her mom pressed to happen. The trend continues, and its sad because she is a talented girl. Unfortunately, her mom never taught her to live up to things that really existed prior and taught her to wrongly place blame. To talk crap about Dunning and say he ended a career is so off base. They just want/ed somebody to blame. Somebody except themselves. While it was all going the right direction and she was getting praise, they failed to acknowledge issues she was experiencing (prior to Stanford). Once it really became a problem, they wanted to point fingers. Dunning just happened to be the person that was there at the end to point the finger at. There were many people to point fingers at prior, including themselves. On a side note, Stanford blocking was incredible tonight. Hentz, you're a phenom. BYU had been great all season and has every reason to be proud. RJP is a beast and many of us enjoyed watching her all season. Wow I never knew of a lawsuit. Can ounor someone plain what happened I thought she just medically retired? This is crazy

The start of the after the game press conference only starts with BYU but doesn’t show Stanford (??!!?!?) and showed every other team? I’m confused I haven’t seen one press conference of Stanford. Does anyone have a link to one? Another poster claimed that the DVO does not ever post them. As a fan, I do not think the school should have that privilege, but if the NCAA will not post them, they probably do not have the authority to make a school post them. That follows the long-time preference of Regina, the team’s assistant SID, who insists that she will only interface with accredited journalists. So, since only they are in the room with the coach and players, only they should be allowed to see the video.

We all wish for competitive matches, but we sometimes don't get what we wish for. Or, as my old man used to say, "You go wish in one hand and s*** in the other, then tell me which one fills up fastest."

Maybe Heather thought, “Kevin thinks I’m going to flip my line up, so he’s going to flip his. I’ll keep mine the same.” Happened to me a few times as a coach.
Not sure it would have made a difference. Stanford was just too good last night.
If RJP gets POY, I think she’ll be embarrassed. Not that she should be-she’s had a fantastic season. I’m wondering if they wait to announce the POY on Friday so they can “re-vote” after the semis? This year, might not be a bad idea. It would save all the snarky posts (like I’ve seen about Heather) from a few Vters. Not that the committee cares about Vtalk!

It absolutely affected the match.

Still kind of irked by Karch's comment about the "mayor" of Hentz-ville. I mean, would it have hurt to have said something complimentary? Does he just hate to respond positively to ideas/comments that he doesn't initiate? I haven't listened to much of his commentary about Stanford in previous games because I usually go to them live. Is he down on Hentz or what? Karch's evaluation of Hentz as a libero shows his inability to appropriately evaluate talent for the National team. Period. I don't think he understands the emotional component of her game. Sure she might move around more then she has to at times but that's her. Take that away and you're nerfing her.

Why were the Dollies dressed in gray sweatsuits? It wasn't cold in the arena.

It was really fun to watch Hentz in person for the first time. She had some incredible digs, but I may have been even more impressed with Alade's play. Looking at the in-match stats displayed at Target Center, I thought they had to be mistaken with how many blocks Tami had. Just a dominant performance. So agree with the 10 second bursts of EDM between EVERY point being extremely annoying and unnecessary. It really took whatever crowd noise that could have been happening out of the arena for both matches. BYU's section was loud at the beginning, but Stanford really made it hard for them to sustain the enthusiasm for the Cougars past the 2nd set. Also, I think there were a lot of Cornhusker fans still at the bars during the start of the Stanford match. Also enjoyed watching the Stanford tree do his thing and the Tom Hanks-Castaway led Cardinal band.

BYU needs to find a way to get into the PAC12. I believe playing in the WCC hurt BYU a lot. Not enough tough competition, once conference season started. This is correct

Oh good, the guy that destroyed Hodson's career is gonna do some commentary between matches John dunning did not give Hodson her first 4 concussions. She got 1 with him which was her 5th and the doctor said no more. not Dunning fault. I get the feeling that she's happy where she's at and concussions aside probably wouldn't change a thing. I think she wanted to do other things.

Don't want to stats-chat in a blowout like this, but the most interesting was hitting errors. The whole Stanford team had 7. BYU had 32! Never seen anything like this. Alade was not an effective hitter, but she had 14 blocks! I'll take that! I thought after facing the Florida and Texas block we could hit against anyone. Guess not. Wish BYU would have played better. Rough way for the seniors to go out. But thanks for a great season. It’s been so fun. Go Cardinal. Texas block was nothing this year compared to year's past.
