The Buckeyes drag down the defending MAC Champions. In Bowling Green.... ...KY. On Thursday the Buckeyes host the Miami Redhawks, who split the MAC Title with BG last year. Then of course on Friday, it's the noncon grand finale, against the big bad Dayton Flyers!

2 players were unavailable at tonight's game.
Freshman MB Reilly MacNeill was in a short walking boot. Freshman OH Jenaisya Moore had her left hand heavily wrapped. Looked like it was more wrapped around the ring and pink fingers.

Doesn't look like Columbus native Jennifer Schulze out of Dublin Coffman got in the game for Miami.

Unlike Michigan... . With the wins over BG, Miami and Dayton, OSU clinches at least a share of the de facto State Title. /Cincy is also undefeated against Ohio teams, collecting victories against Cleveland State and Xavier. They play Bowling Green tomorrow (Sat) and Dayton on October 30. So in the unlikely event that they win both of those games, they would have a solid argument for a share of the state title with OSU. //Personally I think that the Bearcats would have a weaker case for two reasons. 1) They are ducking Miami this year, who they usually play, and lost to last year. And 2) they lost to freaking Northern Kentucky; technically not an Ohio team, obviously, but they are in the Cincy metro.

By far the best day of the season so far for the buckeyes. Probably not a coincidence that Sandbothe played better than she has the rest of the season. Geoff actually used a consistent lineup for both matches.
Current Lineup: S: Mauer (back row and when low on subs) Podraza (front row) OH: Grunze, Powell MB: Witte, Sandbothe OPP: Bukilic L: Murr Franklin comes in for Powell in the back Gruensfelder comes in for Bukilic in the back

Looks like a pretty strong start to the season! I've been completely swamped so I've just seen bits and pieces. Gotta smash some turtles tonight.

...and with the road win over the Terps, the Buckeyes are tied for first place atop the Big Ten standings.

Annual preview of the other Columbus area College Volleyball teams: Last year I included all the teams in the surrounding counties, and it was excessive. So this year I will contain it to Franklin County, which is still excessive, but a lot less excessive. NCAA D2 Ohio Dominican Panthers: GMac West Schedule: www.ohiodominicanpanthers.com/sports/wvball/2019-20/scheduleRoster: www.ohiodominicanpanthers.com/sports/wvball/2019-20/rosterLast year they rolled through the season with only 8 players; 6 Freshmen, 2 Sophomores, and a JuCo transfer from Columbus State. The results were predictably underwhelming, and any "rebuilding" that may have been accomplished was dealt a major setback in the off season when the setter and the libero each left the program (the libero has resurfaced at Columbus State). The good news is that they have 8 freshmen coming in, and bring back everyone else except the libero and the setter. They only mustered one GMac win last year, so they should be able to top that pretty easily if they are even remotely competent. It is year 4 of the Jenn Fepke regime, and she is still searching for her first 10 win season. NCAA D3 Otterbein Cardinals: OAC Schedule: otterbeincardinals.com/schedule.aspx?path=wvballRoster: otterbeincardinals.com/roster.aspx?path=wvballThe Cards won 3 OAC Titles over the last 2 years (2 regular season, 1 tournament) and had a 2017 NCAA tournament appearance behind Wright St transfer OH Hadley Sterett. Now that her eligibility has expired I would expect the Cardinals to fall back to the middle of the OAC pack. Particularly since they also graduated a four year starting setter along with a few other key players. The good news is that the back row returns intact, anchored by 4 year Libero Ashlyn Leon. Even so, a realistic ceiling for them this year is probably a top four OAC finish, and hosting an OAC quarterfinal. Monica Wright returns for her 13th season as HC, and is by far the greatest coach in school history, being the only one to ever win a Conference Title and/or make it to the NCAA Tournament. Capital Crusaders: OAC Schedule: athletics.capital.edu/sports/wvball/2019-20/scheduleRoster: athletics.capital.edu/sports/wvball/2019-20/rosterAfter posting the first winless season in school history, they made sure that it wouldn't happen again by putting a couple of JuCos on the docket. The Crusaders haven't made it to the OAC Tournament since 2014, which is worse than it sounds as the top 8 out of 10 teams go. While an 8 seed might be a bit of an optimistic ceiling for them under the circumstances, it would be disappointing if they didn't at least beat Wilmington and emerge forth from out of the OAC cellar. The good news is that they appear to be bringing just about everyone back, which is unusual for them as they generally hemorrhage players in the off season. Of course there is still time for some last minute deflections, which aren't exactly abnormal. Amanda Hubbard enters her third season at the helm, no doubt hoping that year three is a lot more like year one than the winless year two. NJCAA D3 Columbus State Cougars: OCCAC Schedule: www.cscccougars.com/sports/wvball/2019-20/scheduleRoster: www.cscccougars.com/sports/wvball/2019-20/rosterThis team is the diamond in the rough for 2019. Last year they rolled through the season with basically all freshmen, and were Nationally ranked in the top 5 throughout the season, finishing second in the OCCAC behind the Owens Express, who went onto win the National Championship. Owens is always the team to beat if you want to win this Conference, but the Express have to replace a lot of their key players while Columbus State brings just about everybody back from last year's team. The Cougars also poached the Libero from Ohio Dominican (NCAA D2) and they are bringing in a robust class of 10 freshmen, many of which are not local gals which is obviously unusual for a commuter college. From the outside looking in, it appears as though they are going "all in" this season, bound and determined to win the whole ball of wax. IF (big if) they have successfully positioned themselves to be better than Owens, then they should cruise to a National Championship. Bobby Diamond is the top returning starlet on offense, and is an absolute assassin at the net. I suspect that "someone" will sign her up to play for the next two school years after this one. Columbus Ohio Mid-season roundup. Ohio Dominican Panthers - 0-13/0-2 GMac It was a winless September. A few 5 setters, but it's been a pretty rough start. Probably shouldn't have cancelled the Central State game. The Panthers are off to an 0-2 start in GMac play, but will have their opportunities. In fact next weekend they host Ursuline, who is also winless. The Panthers will also get matched up against a few of the other Conference doormats at the Crossroads Midwest Region Crossover in Indy. The good news is that they have only managed to run off one player mid season, instead of half the team like last year. Otterbein Cardinals - 14-3/0-0 OAC I undersold the Cardinals a little in my preseason preview. I was expecting a major rebuild due to all of the key pieces that they had to replace. Well they replaced 'em, and they are rolling. There's no reason they can't make a run at an OAC 3-peat. They'll have to get through the usual suspects; ONU, Heidelberg, Muskingum and Mt Union. But they are loaded, gaining reinforcements from a strong freshman class and the return of a player or two that were hobbled last year. Capital Crusaders - 8-12/0-0 OAC I undersold Capital a little as well, wondering if they could even win a game after failing to do so a season ago. They laid that talk to rest right out of the gate, winning four of their first seven. They did schedule a little lighter in the noncon, but they have also avenged a few of last year's losses. I am going to go out on a limb here and guarantee a victory over Wilmington in OAC play. They will have to muster a second Conference win in order to qualify for the OAC Tourney, and they haven't pulled that off since 2014. Marietta is probably their best chance at ending that streak. Best case scenario from a Columbus perspective would be if Otterbein gets the 1 seed and Capital gets the 8 seed, setting up a crosstown spike off in the OAC Quarterfinal round. Columbus State Cougars - 15-3/8-2 OCCAC They had their best start in a long time, but their Conference Title hopes have been dashed. While the Owens loss was lopsided, it was on the road and they could have avenged it at home. But then they dropped a road game vs Sinclair, who they had already beaten at home. So they will be unable to catch Owens unless someone else also trips them up as well, which they won't. The Cougars were ranked as high as #3 Nationally before suffering the pair of OCCAC losses. Their lone nonCon loss was against Otterbein JV. At any rate, the team remains loaded and competitive.

The Women are struggling to get anything at all going this afternoon against Michigan. Almost look worn out and tired, no fight at all.
