With or without Orr? Seemed like the 6-2 last week went well enough to show potential without her. Team has lost its two 6 rotation Captains this season...

My 2019 Year In Review and Future Outlook
Qualifications: Season ticket holder since 2012, watched about 75% of this year's matches (either live or on FloVolleyball).
Disclaimer: Pretty much just a fan. Daughter played club volleyball through age 14.
2019 started with lofty expectations. Extremely tough schedule, but if the Hawkeyes could end the year with a winning record they would be in the tournament since RPI would not be an issue. Things started off well with an upset of #22 Washington State, but an injury to Megan Buzzerio during the non-conference schedule started a cascade of injuries that would make for a trying season. Here's my review by position...
DS/L: Boyer, Slagle and Johnston got the bulk of the playing time. Lowes (as a DS), Bushman and Evans didn't play very much at all. The big thing I saw out of the back line was a lack of consistency. When the back line passed well, the team did well. When the back line struggled with their passing, the team rarely was able to recover. I think this was really typified by Johnston, who was 2nd in the B1G in digs/set coming into the last game of the season. There would be times where she was diving all over the court and digging the ball like Olson or Kelly before her, but then there would be times where she would shank four passes in a row.
Setter: Brie Orr showed that she is one of the best setters in the B1G, missing 10 of the last 11 games of the season was tough. Courtney Buzzerio showed that she can run the offense in the absence of Brie, but Buzzerio was really needed as a RS. Lowes came in as a setter in a 6-2 system towards the end of the year and did a good job. However, being undersized meant that she couldn't always make up for sub-par passing and sometimes the offense suffered.
MB: Jones and Clayton got most of the playing time, but Rients got some extended looks. Tubbs only played in a handful of sets. Jones showed some more offense this year and had some runs where she was serving tough as well. Clayton was great on the block and could put away mistake balls, but didn't seem to have much offense run for her. Rients showed a great block, but couldn't consistently make kills.
RS: Courtney Buzzerio was the starter at the beginning of the year and Grunkemeyer was the backup. Buzzerio looked good as a RS, but would be even better if she could elevate a little more to be able to hit over the block. Grunkemeyer got injured during the season and wasn't an option anymore once Orr got hurt and Buzzerio had to shift to setter. Rients tried to step up and play RS, but didn't have much of a kill shot. During the last couple of games Iowa would cycle their OH through RS as well, which sort of worked.
OH: The season started with Megan Buzzerio playing 6-rotation and Hughes and Hansen fighting for the other spot. After Buzzerio's injury it became Hughes in one slot and Hansen and Schmidt fighting it out for the other spot. None of them consistently played 6-rotation, with Courtney Buzzerio playing 6-rotation instead. Hughes was the most consistent hitter, with Hansen and Schmidt showing flashes of excellence. However, none of the three showed a ton of physicality.
Overall, I thought the team did about what it was capable of, given the circumstances of the season. Even if you say they could have won five of the matches that they lost (South Dakota, Iowa St, Michigan St, Rutgers, Ohio St), they still be under .500, at 15-16. Just too many tough opponents this year, especially given the injuries.
Outlook for 2020 I really hope the team can gain more consistency in the offseason. Having a consistently good passing game would greatly help this team. Hopefully they can develop some depth at RS and find a complete MB (either Clayton or Rients developing a kill shot) to pair with Jones. To me, Iowa still really needs a standout OH. This is the one thing that seems to consistently elude the Hawkeyes. The closest to this during the Shymansky era was Cali Hoye. I really hope either Hansen, Schmidt or Black (2020 recruit) are able to be a consistent heavy hitter at the net that can be counted on night in and night out. If the Hawks can find that, I think they have the talent to finish in the middle of the B1G and make the tournament.

Jaedynn Evans (Freshman DS) no longer listed on roster. Best of luck to her in her future endeavors.
