2S are ahead of Kerri & Brooke in the world rankings. Doesn’t look like Kerri & Brooke have it right now. Unless I’m missing something. The World Rankings are not the same as the Olympics ranking points. Here’s the link for Olympics ranking points: www.fivb.org/EN/BeachVolleyball/OGRanking_W.aspThe World Rankings are the best 8 finishes played in the last 365 days. The World Rankings were only used for World Tour Finals, as far as I know. The top 8 or 10 teams would play in WTF but since this year’s is treated like a traditional 5* event, entry points should be used instead. The Olympic Rankings are 12 best finishes as a team since the start of the Olympics qualification period (last September) but since many teams have yet to reach 12 events, it’s basically the sum of all their finishes since September 2018. Thanks for the details...So if I am looking at this right, The ATeam is pretty much a shoe in if April is Careful on the ski slopes this off season & Alix doesn’t ingest anything she isn’t supposed to?

Yes- A-Team basically in once they get the 12 required tournaments to qualify. Technically it is not 100% but unless 2 other US teams start finishing 1st, 2nd at EVERY 4 & 5* the rest of the way, A-team will be in. KWJ/Brooke should be heavy favorites to get the 2nd spot as long as 1) they stay healthy and 2) one of the other lower teams, basically 2S or Claes/Sponcil, do not finish Top 5 at multiple 4 & 5* tournaments in the future...which neither team has proven they can do consistently. Granted, if one of those teams goes on a monster run in future 4 & 5* tournaments, they could get the 2nd US olympic spot, but currently, neither team has shown they are a Top 5 World Team, much less a Top 10 world team. If everyone continues to play the way they have been playing, A-Team & KWJ/Brooke will be US reps. Will be interesting to see if 2S is skipping Portugal and why. With a watered down field for a 4*, this would be a great tournament for them to be in. Guessing injury (Summer back?) as strategically, there is no reason to skip this as they need big points.

I’m just bummed that if my favorite player ever goes to her 6th Olympics that she doesn’t really stand a chance for a medal. 😥 An Olympic appearance just to be there is not what she wants and that’s the most disappointing thing.

I wasn’t a big fan of the team of 2S to begin with but I gotta feel for Summer. Being so close and having a partner that could put her in her 1st Olympics has to be disappointing currently. She doesn’t look injured to me. But she must be.. They have time but missing this tourney hurts. Kerri & Brooke need to capitalize on this opportunity.

An elite big is a game changer in sand VB. KWJ was a BIG wild card coming back from injury and due to recent health issues, I could see why top defenders might have struggled to commit. Since 2S was on a roll, I could see why Sara didn't want to commit, too much health risk with KWJ plus why alienate Summer when 2S could be a viable team for the long-term.
Sponcil on the other hand, I do not understand unless she was lower on KWJ's list than Brooke. Sponcil had no real partner commitments and if KWJ called, why not say yes. If KWJ gets hurt, nothing really lost. If KWJ comes back and is playing well, then she is probably carrying Sponcil along to the Olympics. Would be interesting to know where Brooke/Sponcil fell on KWJ's wish list.
Post Olympics, Alix is going to have her pick of defenders. Best bets would be Sara or Sponcil. Wonder how Alix/Sara's sponsorship deals will come into play with the decision?? Alix is the face of Adidas VB and Sara is face for Nike VB.

[ This is only what I heard but Kerri was going to try the long shot attempt with Kelly Claes until Kelly told her she wanted to play with Sponcil. Brooke was actually Kerri’s 2nd choice behind another blocker. Again this is only what I’ve heard. Maybe Geddy or VBJ have more inside info than I do. Anyways, I think it’s come as a shock to many people that Kerri & Brooke are in the position their in. I knew that Kerri would come back and play like Kerri. Hope her & Brooke can hang on and shock the world like Agatha & Barbara did in 2016.

Seems feasible that Claes was the other possibility since they played a couple events together. It would be interesting to learn how that all went down. I kind of doubt that Sponcil was a serious option because she knew she would miss a bunch of Olympic qualifying events due to school. Plus Sponcil wasn’t nearly as dominating in college the way Hughes was. I’m not sure anyone could have realistically expected her to be as competitive at the highest pro level as she is only two months after finishing up at UCLA.

Sponcil on the other hand, I do not understand unless she was lower on KWJ's list than Brooke. Sponcil had no real partner commitments and if KWJ called, why not say yes. If KWJ gets hurt, nothing really lost. Au contraire, mon ami. KWJ wanted Claes, and then Claes didn't work out for her. She dumps Claes, and Claes calls Sponcil who had been playing with Fendrick, whom she had done well with, but Fendrick got pregnant. With me so far? As you said, an elite Big is a game changer. The USA has Summer, Claes, and now Alix. Alix is already elite, Summer and Claes might get there, not sure yet. But if you're Sponcil, in late summer of 2018, you only see Claes as a desired and available long term Big. Alix taken by April, Summer taken by Hughes, and KWJ coming off injury to only play another two years. At that point, one of only three elite Bigs asks you to be a long term partner. Suppose Sponcil says no to Claes and commits to KWJ for two years. Claes picks up Hochever, or whoever, unless Flint or Stockman decides to look for a new Big. Now we're at August, 2020 and KWJ retires. Sponcil is without a Big. What chance do you give Claes of picking up Sponcil, when Sponcil said no two years prior? Claes, Alix and Summer (depending on her back) have their pick of defenders. It's a risk to think you turn down Claes now, who is likely an 8-10 year partner, and expect she'll forgive you in 2020. It was also a risk that KWJ would get through Tokyo with a sound shoulder, and still is, actually. Bottom line is, Sponcil had a lot to lose by turning down Claes in Sept. 2018.

She might gett a little bored for 4 years until Paris if she really has no passion for the bench.

she's not that animated and electric when she plays purely out of being competitve... she's said how she loves BVB ... I mean she's made a ton of money playing indoor professionally, but 2 full time years and pulling in 203k and not even hitting your potential and playing with someone whos at the end of her career... even if she were blind she'd see the bright future...

She could go back to indoor, but won't be as in demand as she was three years ago when she left. Listening to Reid talk about the toll the body takes for an Outside Hitter in indoor, you wonder whether she would prefer to preserve her body IF playing indoor did not at that point pay a lot more than Beach. Let's say she could make $150k indoors in Turkey or wherever, and $100k in Beach. Then, Sponsorship money might be better for Beach assuming she is considered one of the top 2 or 3 players in the world. Plus if she Golds in Tokyo, you know sponsorship will be very good... she is an advertiser's dream.... alltime great at Stanford, Gold in Tokyo, best American player in the world, not hard to look at, etc. Then what about the satisfaction that comes from being the known as the best in the world? That would not come from being one of 30 or so really good indoor outsides.

I honestly don`t think Alix would have won even half if she was playing with anyone else besides April. I think April gets overlooked a lot, not only because she`s great, but all her experience that she has put into Alix already. April has basically taken Alix into a short cut. Let`s say if Alix was playing with Sponcil I don`t think she would be where she`s now as a player. And I don`t think she will be able to find a partner good as April in the next 5-10 years ( if April retires). Anyways...will be interesting to see if NBC will give the prime slot to Kerry or Alix-April in Tokyo.
