This happens a lot more than you think, OP, in volleyball at all levels, college, pro and international. As they say, it ain't over until the fat lady sings.

If it happens a lot more than we think, then it doesn't match that basketball game. Oregon's win probability was at 99.8% in that basketball game. What we're looking for are the situations that are similar to that, where a team only comes back 1 in 500 times.

You can't have exact matches for different sports. Coming back from what seem to be certain losses is not a rare thing in volleyball. It depends how you define it, if you want to be exact as to make a direct comparison to that basketball game...there is one match I can think of...

BYU volleyball this past season nearly went undefeated and got swept in the final four; it is not quite exactly what happened to the 2014-15 Kentucky men's basketball team that lost to Wisconsin though I'm sure most had them favored to win it all!

Andrea Becker, current Sport Psychologist for the USA Men's Team, spoke about this very thing at the 2015 AVCA Convention. She calls it "Competitive Loafing." MP3 Audio.

What's surprising is I feel like a lot of epic comebacks/collapses/meltdowns tend to happen in the Olympics. A lot of heartbreaking losses for sure.

What's surprising is I feel like a lot of epic comebacks/collapses/meltdowns tend to happen in the Olympics. A lot of heartbreaking losses for sure. Heart-breaking losses or miraclously win, it depends of course on which side you are rooting for. Olympics...if you are a US fan, then hockey's 1980 "Miracle on Ice" was indeed an amazing comeback. And specifically volleyball, Brazil suffered a heart-breaking loss in the 2012 Men Final, Brazil was leading 2-0 and leading 22-19 when they retired Giba in the third set. Big mistake. Russia turned around and beat them for gold 3-2. Of course, if you are a Russian fan, then it would have been an comeback for the record books (well, maybe not literally, but figuratively). And back in 2004, it was the Brazil women who suffered a heart-breaking loss. Brazil was leading 2-1 in the semifinal and had the match point at 24-19 against Russia when they blew it in the 4th set and allowed Russia to win 28-26 to an eventual loss of 3-2. The reverse happend in 2012. Not an amazing comeback or meltdown, but Russia was leading 2-1 against Brazil in the women quarterfinal when Brazil pushed back to prevail. And then there was Rio. Brazil absolutely crushed China in the quarterfinal first set, 25-15, the fans were all expecting an easy 3-0 win, but China had something else in mind and pull off a 3-2 win on their way to gold.

Yes, the Olympics is pretty brutal for these things. Yup. I remember this. Felt bad for her, but the price she paid for showboating.

And that move haunted her for the rest of her career. What's strange is that it seems like such a simple move that shouldn't cost her to slip and fall, but what do I know about snowboarding! lol

Yes, the Olympics is pretty brutal for these thing Here is that 2004 semifinal between Brazil and Russia. Jump to the 1:40:07 mark, the Brazilians were jumping and celebrating at 24-19, they had 5 match points, surely they must have thought, the game was theirs, well.....

Why did the coach take Giba out? A three-point lead in the gold medal match is not the time to sub out your starters...

Bernardo Rezende is a great coach, but that decision was hard to understand, but he did it, and he paid the cost for it.
