Luyties left for non volleyball related reasons. Hope Hall has a good offseason. Well, sort of volleyball related.

I Thought Reka Orsi Toth would be a shoe in for the wahine, went on to get wcc freshmen of the year, too bad Hall didn’t make it work. . I'm glad none of the Hawaii defectors (e.g., Monkhouse, Luyties) were recognized. Call me petty. Yeah, unfortunate that Monkhouse fainted after the Hawaii game and had to sit out the rest of the tournament and I am glad she is okay. But, I still didn't like the photo of UCLA team and Monkhouse holding her finger in the air ("we're #1)! Unfortunately, I think we were just one player away of doing really well. With Monkhouse and Iosia, it could have been a different story. Monkhouse and Maglio had wanted to play together. Unfortunately, Mags was at the time Lea quit not thinking she was coming back, and then Lea quit about the time Mags said she was coming back. Hall was quoted saying they would play at the #1 and I do believe this would have been an upgrade over Ozee/Maglio for this year. Luyties barely got playing time at Cal. Unfortunate for her, nice girl, but I think she could have helped Hawaii had she stayed. To be clear, I am not mad at Ozee (although I did find it amusing that she put on her Instagram page - NCAA court #1, I will be back next year and then posted a bunch of photos of herself...no mention or thank you to her partner for getting her there). lol Amy did the best she could. I just don't think she was ready for Flight #1 as a defender. Even her offense really was terrible for many of the matches. Her BWC performance was poor (that had to affect Maglio play as well when things just continued to go wrong on those games). I am not sure how Amy was all of a sudden able turn her offense around just for NCAA's (which she did) when she couldn't do it the rest of the season...a little too late I guess and I feel like that cost Maglio an All-American (and she gave up a lot of potential to come back for this team). She probably doesn't care that much about the actual award, but I really wanted her to get it.

That would be really too bad if he let her get away? She is a Julia level volleyball player! It could have been Maglio/Monkhouse, Orsi-Toth/Martin, Scoles/Homayun, Ozee/Napolean, Loker/Huddleston. Yikes, that would have been nice. Too bad.

They could exclude Seniors (not old farts) or have their separate honorable awards unless they plan to go grad school, it doesn't help individual exposure going forward. It would help out the school I suppose, much like a recruiting tool. I can see Anna saying in the line of "I coached 10 All-Americans last season". I personally wouldn't really get too worked up about it. I like 'SC just not a fan of Anna's persona. I feel as if she overlooks a lot of team and plays it off on camera and blames it on the girls for not showing up.
It was so funny watching espn cut to Lea Monkhouse be the first to hold (or the one holding the trophy) right after the winning pair got the W, and they were taking photos with it.
Do you guys think Luyties would have been a better blocker or split defender compared to Russo?
They could have used an actual defender at 1, and placed Ozee at a lower pair to defend (stuck it out w/ Martin/Ozee at 3). I wonder if they even attempted to put Napoleon w/ Mags or if Maglio outright asked for Ozee. Hindsight is 20/20 with these pairings and possible players filling the roster. Seeing those service errors at the BW tournament and NCAA tourney was frustrating to watch, it was amateur hour out there (yes I know it is considered amateurs). I've seen pros have the same amount of service errors in one set so it's not like its uncommon but the issue later gets fixed, not so in this case.
Edit: I just saw that Ozee was an 'Honorable' mention for AA. Did they not consider players like Martin as an AA or Poletto just because they played at 3?

Yes, given that she had little to do with UCLA's national championship run.

The coach has to nominate the players for AA. Maglio and Ozee would have had to win AA (being at the #1 pair) for our second pair to be considered. I believe the rules specifiy the #2 flight could be nominated (but only can win if their first flight win the award). So, Julia and Ari may have been nominated. But, with not giving the award to Maglio and Ozee meant they couldn't even get HM. That is part of the frustration for me because Julia and Ari also compared well with Sponcil and Lily/ Cannon/Slater. In the past, USC's second flight have won an AA, but I think only the best second team (Sponcil and Lily) should have won AA. That would have put Maglio and Ozee in, and then Julia and Ari could have received AA along with Cannon and Slater. Again, just my opinion. I know this was a bit of a rant for me, and I am sorry. I just know how much Maglio, in particular, has given to UH volleyball. It was a grind playing both and keeping up her school work for four years. She really wanted to come back to go for a Natty and disappointing that Monkhouse left. I agree, I am not a SC hater. I do not like Anna Collier and I don't like some of the way she has coached her team.

The Lea Monkhouse comment was more of a "Are you serious?" funny rather than a "haha" funny. Wolfgang described it for me haha....
fetchin As for Anna C., I'm not sure how other UH fans (and others) feel about her. There are a few negative comments on other threads. The latest one I saw was how espn shouldn't do an up close interview with her any longer. When people make comments like that they should at least suggest on what the live broadcast could do. Maybe something like blur her out Black Mirror style? I don't know...
For her actual coaching there was a comment about her coaching style here:
I noticed some of the players doing the opposite as pushing the set to the net, although I'm sure this changes depending on in-game strategy and player discretion.

Canada is nice but Europe has a lot of talent (four all americans this season and many talented players through out the country playing at the top flights) I hope he starts bringing in an European every season like Wade does for the Men.

I think the hardest pair to put together is the one with Maglio. Mags was not here for fall camp so she is going to have to work with someone new. I would like to see Mags be paired with Loker but I think Loker and Martin probably have better chemistry. Paige Dreeuws could be the next logical partner for her but to jump from flight 5 to fight one is a huge leap. I doubt Hall will break up Scoles and Napoleon since they did so well in the fall. I would keep Ozee and Homayun at flight 3; since they did so well there last season. If I have my Jeff Hall cap on this will be my flights: 1) Maglio and Loker 2) Martin and Russo(Martin played with a freshman last year in Monkhouse so why not again?) 3) Ozee and Homayun(why mess with a good thing) 4) Scoles and Napoleon(did well in the fall and seems to be good fit. Both first year in D1 but extremely athletic) 5) Huddleston and Dreeuws. This is going to be the lineups....just watch!!! :-o Haha! We will see if you are right! There are lots to like about your pairings! Martin and Russo have really good chemistry and get along well outside of volleyball. However, I'm not sure if Russo is ready to play at the #2 spot yet though. It would be awesome if she has a great camp before the season begins. I'm also not sure if Loker is as good at defense as Monkhouse, though she has a good arm like Monkhouse. That's why I can see Ozee with either Maglio, Martin or even Scoles. Huddleston and Dreeuws would be really similar to the Dreeuws/Zalopany pairing of last year!

Loosing one, two or three girls in the same year is a lot but when you have five players that get on the transfer list and one who flat out quit, there’s a problem. It’s sounds like one of the coaches in this volleytalk not just a fan. Let’s be really, the coaches are the ones who recruited the defenders that were 1000% capable of playing and winning. The decision to pull Dreeuws from Gulf Shores was one that may have caused UH so many transfers. Would be interesting if a volleyball talk host show could get all five girls from this year on there show to talk about why they transferred. Anyone curious else curious too?
