I wonder if BYU transfer Kanai Akana is redshirting this season or he is unable to join the team until next season. I believe he left BYU at the start of the academic year but not sure if he is currently enrolled at UH this semester. He has UH MVB on his Instagram so I’m assuming he has returned home. He has.

From the Honolulu Star Advertiser today:
"If wishes come true, the University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team will start where it left off nine months ago.
The past March, the Rainbow Warriors prepared for a Big West road match against Cal State Northridge. But the coronavirus outbreak forced the cancellation of that two-match series and eventually the rest of the season.
Of the 2021 season, head coach Charlie Wade noted, the “first match figures to be, ironically, the exact same place (Northridge) where the (2020) season ended, that same weekend in March.”
Tentative plans call for a league-only regular season for Big West teams, with a round-robin of three-match series. Only the first two matches of a series would count toward the standings — and the Big West tournament’s seedings. “If you’re only playing league games, you want to max it out,” Wade said of expanding series from the usual two matches to three.
Wade said players would welcome playing on three consecutive nights.
“The players always would rather play games than practice,” Wade said. “We try to make our practices harder than the game, so the games should be a little easier. And as a coach, you’ve got to manage. … If you only have one guy who can score and you have to set him every time three nights in a row, yeah, you’re at a disadvantage on that third night. But that third night is nonconference. We don’t have any problem playing three nights in a row. We do that in tournaments. Theoretically you have to do that in the Big West tournament and the NCAA Tournament. It’s not that bad to get into that mind-set.”
After five weeks of training in November and early December, the Warriors took a break for final exams. The past Friday and Sunday, the Warriors took the antigen COVID-19 test to re-establish the “bubble.” Monday was the first practice of training camp. Wade said four players were set to arrive on Wednesday. Outside hitter Filip Humler and setter Jakob Thelle — both of whom have been in Europe since March — are scheduled to return next week. Starting today, the Warriors will undergo the molecular (PCR) tests once a week. COVID-19 testing will expand to three times a week as the season nears.
Because the 2020 season was cut short, the NCAA granted a do-over, meaning each player will retain the same class standing in 2021. Three All-Americans — outside hitter Colton Cowell, middle Patrick Gasman and opposite Rado Parapunov — are back for their second senior season. Wade said there will be three third-year freshmen and a fourth-year sophomore. Cowell, Gasman and Parapunov are in grad school. “We have third-year freshmen going like, ‘I can slow down and get a master’s or I can speed up and get a PhD,” Wade said. “We have more people who are going to walk out of here with a graduate degree in the next three or four years than in the history of the program combined.”
Some observations from Wade:
>> Cowell, at 6 feet 1, is poised for an MVP-caliber season. Cowell, who can touch 11 feet 7, can consistently launch above-the-antenna-level shots. His serve can reach 70 mph. And Cowell is the league’s best serve-receiver. “There aren’t many people on the planet who can pass like him,” Wade said. “Colton is in the best shape of his life. He’s playing at a higher level that we’ve ever seen.”
>> In the competition for the the second middle position opposite Gasman, Max Rosenfeld made large gains in fall training. “He was on the floor when we beat Lewis and BYU last year,” Wade said. “He’s good. He’s really worked hard. He’s in his fourth year and he still has three years of eligibility. He’s playing at a really high level. He’s crushing serves.”
Alaka‘i Todd is a third-year freshman who grew an inch, up to 6-9, and is capable of touching 11-8.
>> There are several contenders for the second left-side spot. Humler, who started last season, should not need much time to regain form after he arrives next week. Wade praised Chaz Galloway and Devon Johnson, and offered that Spyros Chakas is “closer to starting than not. He’s really impressive.” Punahou graduate Kana‘i Akana has transferred from BYU.

bigwest.org/news/2021/1/7/general-hawai-i-tourism-authority-named-presenting-sponsor-of-big-west-basketball-mens-volleyball-championships.aspxfrom Cindy Luis blog Had mentioned previously that this would be happening (via MVB coach Charlie Wade) The Big West today announced that the Hawai’i Tourism Authority would be the presenting sponsor for the men’s and women’s conference basketball tournaments. Men’s volleyball will host this year and in 2022. UC Irvine, which had been scheduled to host this past spring (April 23-25, 2020) will host in 2023. This year’s event at the Stan Sheriff Center scheduled for April. IMHO good news that BWC is looking at postseason Will see when teams announce schedules. Sounded like they’ll be following the schedule from last year in terms of order of contests but like a three-match series with two counting in conferenece and one nonconference. If so Hawaii would open at CSUN, host UC San Diego and Long Beach State, play at UC Santa Barbara, finish conference play at home with UC Irvine. Basketball, men and women, will be in Las Vegas March 9-13. Although UH schedule still has it being played in Anaheim, Calif. From UH AD David Matlin: “The University of Hawai‘i is honored to host the Big West Volleyball tournament at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. The last time we hosted, it was a memorable event for both Big West student athletes and the people of Hawai’i. Mahalo to the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority for this impactful Big West sponsorship and for their continued support of University of Hawai‘i Athletics.”

HTA sponsoring an event in Las Vegas (even if it's the 9th island) is silly. It sounds like us just bailing them out and giving them money.

Just found it on volleyballmag: Austin Buchanan (6-8, S, Monte Vista, CA, Bay to Bay) Spyros Chakas (6-4, OH, Athens, Greece) Makua Marumoto (6-4, OH, Hawai’i Baptist, Honolulu, Hawai’i, Spike & Serve) Croix Reganit (6-2, RS-OH, Sierra Vista, Las Vegas, Nevada, Kaizen) Logan Sharp (5-9, Libero, El Segundo, CA, SCVC) Jack Walmer (6-3, S, Mira Costa, Manhattan Beach, CA, MB Surf) Croix's got some major hops and hang time...hope his passing and defense is just as impressive. This seems like a decent class,
just missing that ever elusive middle blocker.

There were mentioned that Alakai Todd have been impressive in workouts. It that is the case, I feel we will be ok. After Pat Gasman graduate, we will still have Max Rosenfeld, Voss and Todd for 2022. Wade could always find an international one that could step in right away in 2022 or the year after.

When is UH men team will start the season? I can't find any info on this. no one knows. supposed to be sometime March from what I've heard. It looks like the BW is set to start in earnest the second week of March, although some teams with short travel distances may start during the first week of March. They will only be playing teams in their conference. Hawaii will likely have five three-game blocks of either Thu/Fri/Sat or Fri/Sat/Sun (it will vary with their opponent) with only the first two matches counting towards conference records. I'm guessing here, but it would seem that they will be on the road three weekends and at home two weekends.

I know this is a 2020 thread, but I didn't feel the need to start my own topic....but, looking at the top recruits for 2021 or 2022... Who in the heck does Hawaii pick up? I get the two setters, Marumoto, and Sypros, but any top 5 recruit in the US considering Hawaii? levi cox bruh... get with it low key, #1 recruit in the nation. hes a 7 foot middle, plays for kevin wong at SAS even though he not from here, mother suzanne is second all time in blocks at UH behind angelica what class is levi? has he committed yet?

'22 and he isn't. also, whoever stated that he's the number 1 recruit, he's far from that. very raw and slow for his size, he'll get there tho, hopefully like scott stadick. but nowhere near a top 10 recruit.
