Didn’t know squeezing past a #7 seed qualifies you as the best team in the state. They’ll definitely have trouble against the team to come out of Rochester. I was actually thinking this would be the year that the Rochester or Buffalo team doesn’t make the state final in D1. Have heard/seen a lot of good things about the way that Shen and CNS have progressed through the year. Unless it’s McQuaid getting through from the West (current favorites), I think whoever gets through the Central Region will play the Long Island rep in the D1 final. Plus Shen crushed Penfield in 3, and CNS took them down in 5, and Penfield won the toughest league in Section V over Fairport and Victor. I think that Shen or Suffern vs. CNS game on Saturday will be played at just as high of a level as the Section V-VI game.

Tonight's Recap (Tuesday 11/12)
Big night in Western NY Division 2. Sectional Finals in D5 and D6. The winners in all four matches tonight will advance to their respective state qualifier matches on Thursday. Section V and VI Division 2 are split into two different classifications.
Section 5 D2 (A) Final #1 Churchville-Chili (20-1) def #2 Spencerport (15-7) (3-0; will update score later)
#2 Midlakes/Waterloo (16-7) def #4 Pavilion/York (12-8) (3-0; 25-15, 25-21, 25-15)
Midlakes/Waterloo earn the chance to take on Churchville-Chili on Thursday night at Webster Schroeder in the Section V D2 Regional Qualifier. Churchville is likely the top dog in all of New York D2 right now, followed closely by Grand Island. Both teams appeared to win comfortably tonight.
Section 6 D2 (A) Final #1 Grand Island (19-0) def #3 North Tonawanda (13-5) (3-0; 25-20, 25-20, 25-12)
Section 6 D2 (B) Final #1 Eden (18-1) def #3 West Seneca East (15-6) (3-1; 25-15, 25-17, 28-30, 25-21)
Grand Island and Churchville both one match away in what could be the match that decides the D2 state championship in the regionals. Eden will likely give them a great match on Thursday in the Section VI D2 Regional Qualifier.
Looking Forward No matches tomorrow, Thursday's matches are the Section V and VI D1 Championship and D2 Regional Qualifier Matches. McQuaid vs. Fairport (D1) and Churchville-Chili vs. Midlakes/Waterloo (D2) in Section V. Clarence vs. Orchard Park (D1) and Grand Island vs. Eden (D2) in Section VI.
Out of the 166 boys volleyball teams in New York (under NYSPHSAA) 146 have been eliminated and only 20 teams (12%) remain alive. 10 Division 1 Schools, 10 Division 2 Schools.

No matches tonight, so here’s a central region preview. 3 team region, and the rotating bye goes to Section 3 this year. All 3 teams in the Division 1 Regional are undefeated, may be the first time this has ever happened in the Central Regional.
Central Region Division 1 Preview
Section 1 D1 - Suffern (17-0) Suffern is a team that is really an unknown, not in the program itself, but in how much damage they are capable of at the state level. A couple of really athletic players, especially their outsides who really carry their team, but aren’t known around the state since none of their players play club. Very raw talents, although their serving and passing is above average for a Section 1 team. If they are going to beat Shen, both of their their outsides will need to have a good night. Shen may be a nightmare matchup for Suffern this year, just with the style of volleyball Shen plays, but Suffern will have a huge advantage in being able to play their regional game in their home gym. Expecting them to have a huge crowd and they could pull the upset over Shen.
Section 2 D1 - Shenendehowa (20-0) Shen has done a much better job with ball control and serve receive this season. They looked really solid in the Sectional Tournament, and if they keep up the way they’ve been playing, I like their odds to get out of the Central Regional. They are pretty even with CNS this year, and there isn’t much to separate either team. Their Sectional Final against Bethlehem should have prepared them well for the hostile environments they will have to play in on Friday and Saturday. Big wins over Penfield, Burnt Hills (x2), and Bethlehem (x3) this year. Odds are against them as I don’t think a team has ever won two away matches on back-to-back nights in the Central Region before, and it certainly will be tougher this year with how much stronger the region looks this year. I think both trips are about 6 hours or more round trip (3 hours including stops one way from Albany area) and Shen’s probably looking at 12-14 hours of round trip travel just for the regional.
Section 3 D1 - Cicero-North Syracuse (21-0) Very similar in style and talent level to Shen. They’re results have looked very impressive this season, and they may have as many “quality wins” as any other team in the state. The Northstars have knocked off Penfield, Canisius, Rush-Henrietta, Jamesville-DeWitt (x2), and more. They have the big advantage of having Friday night off, and will have a massive advantage over Shen (if Shen beats Suffern), just due to the insane amount of travel Shen will have over a 30 or so hour period.
Predictions Shen over Suffern in 4 (Friday, 7:00pm @ Suffern HS) CNS over Shen in 5 (Saturday, 7:00pm @ Fayetteville-Manlius HS)

Division 2
Section 1 D2 - Eastchester (12-4) Eastchester is a huge unknown. Word on the street is that they are pretty athletic with a couple of decent swings, but will struggle in serve-receive and on defense. Just like Suffern, they are likely a group of guys with potential, who just don’t play club and haven’t been exposed to higher level coaching yet. I don’t see them getting past Burnt Hills, but anything can happen at this point of the year. Haven’t had any real notable wins yet. Their match against Burnt Hills is at 5:00pm on Friday @ Suffern HS, and will precede the Shen-Suffern matchup in D1.
Section 2 D2 - Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (15-2) In my opinion, Burnt Hills is a big favorite to get out of the region this year in D2. They feature the Section 2 player of the year in their primary outside, and have suffered their only losses of the year to Shen (twice in regular season, plus once at the BHBL tournament), and were swept in 2 of those 3 matches. Whether or not they advance to their 3rd consecutive state tournament will depend exclusively on their ability to execute, as I feel that they are much better than the other two teams in the regional. Just like Shen, they face the challenge of an extreme amount of travel over a 30-ish hour span.
Section 3 D2 - Jamesville-DeWitt (14-4) Jamesville-DeWitt will certainly give (likely) Burnt Hills a run for their money on Saturday night at Fayetteville-Manlius. No real quality wins for them this season, no teams were too impressive out of Section 3 this year with the exception of CNS, who they struggled against. Another relative unknown heading into the regional.
Predictions Burnt Hills over Eastchester in 3 Burnt Hills over Jamesville-DeWitt in 4

Has anyone ever tried starting a club in Section 1? If so, why don’t they take off?

Has anyone ever tried starting a club in Section 1? If so, why don’t they take off? From what I know, multiple attempts have been made. Not really sure why they don't take off, but I'd like to see someone form a new club rather than a girl's club branching out to the boy's side and charging ridiculously high amounts. It's a shame because there have been some tremendous athletes with big potential that have "slipped through the cracks" since they don't play club. With the proper coaching, weight room facilities, and higher levels of play, some of the players in Section 1 would make solid college players (after a season or two of work). Personally, I'm not as high on Suffern as I was a few weeks ago. I think they still have a shot to get through the Central Region, but I think that they may not have enough options to compete at the state level. Still have some really athletic guys that can hit, and a couple that can pass. Still think that their junior OH has more potential than any other junior in the state at the next level, and they have a couple of other guys with backgrounds in basketball, track, etc. could use some volleyball-oriented coaching.

The person who undertakes this would have to do it for the love of the sport not the love of $$$.

Has anyone ever tried starting a club in Section 1? If so, why don’t they take off? They’ve tried. Plainview was a popular one for a little while but it seems like that club is no longer around. The new club in their area is “Block Magic.” The guy running it used to coach for the club “LIVE”.
