The way the release was worded, made it sound like just an extension of the indoor program..."an enhancement to Coach Elliott and the volleyball program" Wonder if he will still get the kind of athletes he's been getting, if they know they have to play beach too.

I mean, isn't that exactly how Nebraska got the ball rolling with their program and it was expected Cook would treat it as such also?

Playing a "limited schedule" in '23 with the indoor staff coaching. Sounds very Nebraska-like. If they look to hire a beach staff for 2024, then we'll know they're serious about competing. Otherwise, it's going to be a three-week "season" with Jerrit and Cook sitting in beach chairs smoking cigars in Honolulu every year. I do hope it's the former, with the right coach and a full complement of scholarships, Texas could become dangerous fairly quickly.

Does John Cook also coach the beach team?

Does John Cook also coach the beach team? Technically. He is the listed HC, and is involved, but has let the assistants do most of the heavy lifting, so to speak. At least he did, I haven't the seen the Nebraska beach team in like the past 3 or 4 seasons.

Reading the release it sounds like they're copying nebraska's system. (aka using it as an extension for indoors). At least initially.

There were initial accusations that they would be using the beach program to extend or split up scholarships to offer more positions to potential recruits as well. Not sure what the rules are for that but it did seem like a loophole initially that was not addressed. I also believe there was a post here a year or two ago showing Elliot with the Texas girls practicing out on their new courts. Is there any proof that Cook and Elliot actually know how to coach beach, or are they of the idea that volleyball is volleyball.

I dont think an athlete can play indoor if they are on a beach scholarship (because of the sport hierarchy thing). So they're not gaining an edge that way (unless it can convince someone to walk on, like Line Andersson at Stanford) but no one is going to Nebraska for beach lol. And no. I dont think Cook would claim to either lol

Elliott might be able to use beach volleyball as a way to extend practice time and skills for the indoor players for a limited amount of time - say, the first two years.
That isn't something Texas as an athletic department or an institution would put up with for very long. If Texas competes in something, they want to compete for national championships. I realize in football it doesn't look like they're trying very hard, but that's more about incompetence than desire.
Well before the 2025 season I would expect Texas to field an independent beach staff, with a full complement of players with scholarships. But between now and when that happens, there may be some competitive advantages for the indoor program of the sort that Nebraska currently enjoys.
Unless Texas makes some kind of ridiculous home run hire on the coaching front, I would imagine it will take some time to get the program up to speed, and if they make a poor hire initially at the head coach position, it extends the timeline. But eventually Texas will expect to compete at the upper tier of the sport. Whether it happens or not is a combination of factors, but that will be the goal.

This is huge getting another Power 5 school into the mix. The sport is growing a lot in the state and if they put maximum effort into this program, it can grow sooner than later.
I pray they don’t use this program like Nebraska does

Texas could have a very good beach program extremely quickly if they hired a coach who knew how to use the transfer portal initially for a quick boost and leadership. Texas has so many athletes from the Dallas, Austin, San Antonio (and to a lesser degree Houston) that have done well at the collegiate level and continues to grow. I think every program at the top level has Texas players on it and the only current strong program in Texas is TCU and that happened in a hurry once they got a coach who could recruit. You have one of the best players to ever play, Adam Johnson, who lives in Austin. Don't have to look far.
