Colorado beat Nashville 4-3 to end the regular season and claim the Central Division title. Not bad for a defending Stanley Cup champ decimated by injuries this season.... And with that the playoffs are set and here goes:
West
1) Vegas vs. Winnipeg - WINNIPEG 2) Colorado vs. Seattle - COLORADO pacific 2 vs. 3 - Edmonton vs. Los Angeles - EDMONTON Central 2 vs. 3 - Dallas vs. Minnesota - DALLAS
ROUND 2 Edmonton over Winnipeg Colorado over Dallas
CONF. FINAL - Colorado over Edmonton
East
1) Boston vs. WC2) Florida - BOSTON 1) Carolina vs. WC1) NY Islanders - NY ISLANDERS Atlantic 2) Toronto vs. 3) Tampa Bay - TAMPA BAY Metro 2) New Jersey vs. 3) NY Rangers - NY RANGERS
Round 2
Boston over Tampa Bay NY Rangers over NY Islanders
CONF. FINAL - NY Rangers over Boston
Stanley Cup Final: NY Rangers over Colorado
There we go. All things being equal I went with the squads with the supposedly more reliable goaltending. I think I overrated the Rangers and picked them last year as well but with Shesterkin in net....

That being said , this OT goal by Juuso Parssinen was SWEET!

Ownership had the Infinity Stones to pull this off and they clicked their fingers. Are they willing to trade aging superstars, survive some lean years, and build for the future? Crosby, Malkin, and Letang are 35, 36, and 35 years old respectively.

Crosby, Malkin, and Letang are 35, 36, and 35 years old respectively. They'll be rebuilding after they retire anyway. And all of them (plus Jake Guentzel) have relatively affordable contracts. I wouldn't trade them unless they're getting an absolute haul in return. They're so important to the history of the Penguins that I'd rather just keep them. I'm happy with how the Crosby/Malkin era turned out in Pittsburgh, assuming that they're not a real title threat anymore. Three Stanley Cups and 16 straight playoff appearances. The Capitals only got one Stanley Cup out of Alex Ovechkin. And the Penguins themselves only got two Stanley Cups out of Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr.

Speaking as a Sharks fan we were/are in the same boat, just ahead of you. Unfortunately we never won the Cup, so Pittsburgh's ROI has been much better. Now we are so bad we have a shot at the #1 draft pick. Two or three more really lean years and several high draft picks, and just maybe we can turn things around. It will take some luck and good management. I worry about the management part more than anything.

I've always liked them, and I had a long-time girlfriend from San Jose. It was bittersweet when they finally advanced to the Stanley Cup Final in 2016, and they were playing the one team that I couldn't root for them against. But yeah, it takes luck and good management. The Penguins were terrible and drafted in the top two from 2003-2006. They drafted Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury and Jordan Staal with those picks, and that was the core of the 2009 Stanley Cup champion team. And of course, Crosby and Malkin were key to the other two titles.

Stomach virus will affect Bruins lineup for game 1. Yes, 100% homer, but having watched this team play 82 games, I am amazed at the way they just figure out a way to win. They did not shy away from the regular season records which is a good sign for the post season. They will just keep rolling. Is some other team going to beat them 4 out of 7? I don't see it short of a Ken Dryden '71 performance from some goalie. 2nd round will be tough either way. I like Edmonton in the west.

Okay, first time watching an ESPN broadcast of the NHL all season (currently watching the Boston v. Florida game 1) - What in the world is this ridiculous hovering callout box label that they're displaying above the puck handler on the power play? Have they been doing this all season? It's not at all critical to know which individual skater possesses the puck at a given moment. If you don't recognize the guy with the puck, just listen to the play by play or wait till something consequential happens and you'll hear who did what.
I guess I'm a Luddite when it comes to sports broadcasts because I'm similarly annoyed at the superimposed strike zone in MLB broadcasts or the dark green shading of the yards to go to a first down or whatever the hell that is. Thank the gods that volleyball has none of that nonsense.

I generally stopped listening to announcers because I think they get paid to have big.mouths. at least when you read a book you do not actually have to listen to them.

I did a Twitter search for "ESPN power play distracting," and the earliest complaint that showed up was Feb 18. So it probably started around then

I no longer really watch either the NFL or MLB so those examples are just me griping for the sake of griping, but this PP label is def annoying. Unnecessary technology and it's not like this is the tool that's magically going to make hockey popular or help individual players ascend into widespread notoriety. Even that glowing puck feature they had decades ago had more utility than this thing. And it's doubly ridiculous that they insist on labeling the player at the time of the game where there's the greatest amount of puck movement. Alright, I'll stop whining now.
