Again, nice guys who know the game, but not broadcasters. People like the Mckibbins, Friend, Travis do it as a hobby - not something they practice or work at to improve or be better and you don't just throw people like that out there on an Olympic broadcast. Even Rich toes that line of hobby and side job, however is very good at it and knowledgeable. I have no problem with paying the first group of people I mentioned some small stipend for doing AVP broadcasts and see how they do as regulars or just extra reps, but not the Olympics. Agreed. NBC has a much higher standard for professional broadcasting training and experience geared toward a more mainstream audience. Doesn't matter as much how much knowledge they have. Even someone like Rich, as much as I like him, NBC would probably look into some of the cringe-worthy comments he's made to smaller audiences and probably take pass. I did notice that the AVP used Rich and Mark S more heavily in the booth alongside Cam in Hermosa. Maybe Matt Prosser and Dain Blanton weren't available? I think it's good to get these people practice doing AVP broadcasts if that's the sort of path they see their careers going down. Totally agree, years ago when Amazon Prime was the host they seemingly were pulling whoever wasn't playing that weekend or at that exact time and brought them into the booth for a set or two and we got to hear some other voices. They should absolutely be doing this for the Bally's app and see if they have any hidden gold somewhere where it wouldn't cost too much and we are not punished listening to Dain for multiple matches in a row just because we enjoy volleyball.

I think Emily Day Capers does an ok job on the Bally app. Her content is good, but her delivery and intonation needs work, as everything she says sounds like she’s asking a question, and it comes across as sounding like she’s unsure. I hope that when they throw amateurs on the mike like that they at least have someone there to provide a basic level of coaching.

Denise Austin of the UK is perceptive snd snimated on FIVB volleyballworld.tv I like her style, although sometimes too emotional, but her emotions often give good insights. Lewis's too. Holly McPeak is fairly good on NCAA broadcasts, albeit a bit sugary - too many positives. Few critiques.

Marlowe and Sunderland are always my top choice. Though Sunderland will almost certainly be occupied commentating on the indoor matches.

Chris and Paul are a big reason why I got into watching AVP broadcasts back in the day. I hope that before they retire the AVP brings them back to call at least one last match together.

I think they have the knowledge and personality to be very good and would love the AVP to give them a shot at it. If it were the McKibbins, expect a Vikings v Partain/Benesh gold medal match where 75% of the commentary is about the Crabbs, Tri and baby court.

Chris was best man at Karch's wedding (or vice versa) and was close friends with several other players. But unlike a lot of modern commentators, both he and Paul were willing to be critical. Basically proved you can straddle that line. Also when watching them, and they were more connected back then, I regularly felt like I was getting insight into the game and the players beyond, "these guys are the greatest." Often discussed rumors about upcoming partner switches, talked about overtures players had made that were refused (when Karch tried to split up Smith/Stoklos etc.) and generally made the sport feel more important

They also were funny and, as former players, used the beach volleyball lingo seamlessly. If it were up to me, they would call the Manhattan Beach final every year.

I absolutely disliked the girl calling the gstaad final. The voice was like she partied all weekend and there were no interesting information whatsoever. Only described what happened and waaaay to many superlatives used. Girl here. Netherite armour on.

Girl here. Netherite armour on. Is this a Minecraft reference that is supposed to show you are unbothered by the comment, or you need that level of protection from someone criticizing your performance?

Hey modern day coach, as a newbie to volley talk I def felt I needed some level of self protection and preservation. But saying hello and coming into the room. Following lots of threads with interest.

Well, they basically cannot do that. The announcers are almost always no longer on site. That's why there's never a live shot of them in the booth, even during the open, which is the most common time to see the broadcast team on camera. And no, they are not providing any coaching to the new announcers they are putting on air.

I know I've seen photos of them on social media sitting courtside with a laptop in front of them. That said, it would not surprise me if they're not being paid a dime.
