Club volleyball season has started and qualifiers will soon be getting underway. It appears the first qualifier for 17's will be the Northern Lights Qualifier in late January, while the 18's begin qualifier play the 2nd week of January at either the KC MLK Qualifier or Windy City Qualifier.
As a reminder of 2023 GJNC finishes, Arizona Storm (Arizona) beat 1st Alliance 16-Gold in three in the 16-Open finals. Nebraska One 16 Synergy (Great Plains) and Tribe 16 Elite Cardinal (Florida) placed third.
At 17's, SCVC 17Roxy (Southern California) beat DYNASTY 17 Black (Heart of America) in three to win the 17-Open final. 1st Alliance 17 Gold (Great Lakes) and H Skyline 17 Royal (Lone Star) placed third.
Just wanted to get conversation going on the upcoming club volleyball season, particularly at the 17/18 Open level. I know it's very early in the season but does anyone have any tea on which 17/18 teams they think have a shot of making it to the end based on early observations or review of rosters? At 18's, will these top finishers lose players to early graduation?

17s - Have to imagine Arizona Storm, 1st Alliance, Tribe, Surfside, Houston Skyline, and Nebraska One will all be in the mix. But can any of the others clubs elevate their status from 2023 to 2024?
Couple interesting developments - new series of MLK weekend tournaments in Houston and Columbus that are attracting to good teams for some early season competition. Not really a fan of USAV Nationals in Las Vegas and think like we saw the last time USAV Nationals were in Las Vegas the AAU Nationals might attract some Clubs opting out of going to Vegas.
Hearing there are also some tournaments not allowing teams to pre-register for Open but instead the tournaments will place the teams in Open or Premier based on how they have played during the season.
Talked to a good source over Christmas break who told me less players have made D1/D2 commitments than this time last year. Not sure how this person has that intel but worth noting if it is in fact true. Might also be a sign of more and more schools opting for transfers over HS recruits,

I believe Milwaukee Sting 17-Gold should be strong again this season as they bring back Madison Quest (Wisconsin commit), Gabriella Pitcel (Illinois commit), Olivia Durst (Michigan State commit), and Kati Berezowitz (Vanderbilt commit).... to name a few.

Don’t they have 2 new setters who have not set at the open level in their age groups and the huge loss of Mackenzie Collins Also wondering why Zoe Humphrey is playing down in 17’s……does that bode well for UCLA?

She is still playing high level volleyball ,one would argue it may be more competitive than 18’s depending on the team. Many kids aren’t playing 18’s as they are early enrollees. One of the setters has played open previously.

If you aren’t a early enrollee, Playing 17s in your 18s season is best. Longer season and tbh competition is better but obviously just depends on that birthday if you’re able too!

1st Alliance and Dynasty 18s lost a lot. But I would expect their 17s to be very good this year.

Additionally, I look for Milwaukee Sting 18-Gold to be uber competitive this season. They return their entire team, while officially adding Lilly Wagner (setter, Maryland commit) to the roster. Wagner played up at 18's during the 2022/2023 season but came down to 17's for the final month of play due to Sting losing their only setter to injury at the end of the season.

On paper, TAV 18-Black looks scary good!!!! It will be interesting to see which teams can hang with them this season.

About the Milwaukee Sting teams... every year there is someone hyping them up and then the results don't actually add up. I believe we heard the same thing about them last year.

Much of the team is the same but adding Suli Davis to that mix elevates them that much more! It will be fun to watch them for sure! TAV-17 Black also looks pretty good on paper. They have a couple players from the Drive Nation team last year that was high ranked throughout the season.
