CAN3 keep their Olympic hope moving forward, onto Quarters by beating SUI1. Wow, thought this was their tourney to lose. It's mind-boggling how Brunner/Huberli, despite theoretically being one of the Top 10 teams around, is incapable of actually winning things. Their only FIVB win was a 1-Star (remember those?) where their opponents got injured in the finals.

One thing I've seen done in eSports to help a situation where there's no pure bracket advantage to winning a group is to let group winners pick their opponents/spot in the draw. This is a huge incentive/reward for doing well in pool, allows top teams to avoid the Duda-got-lazy-in-pool scenarios that !!!!###$$$!!! up draws, and also generate storylines, etc. That would be fun, but the best solution is still just straight double elimination. Every match matters, everyone plays hard. No downside except for the lack of pool play participation badges

HB/SB into the semis vs Zoe VDP (are they SUI2 or SUI3 now)?

CAN3 keep their Olympic hope moving forward, onto Quarters by beating SUI1. They're still well behind in olympic points, but are they close to being ahead of Pavan/McBain in FIVB entry points?

How far behind are Sophie and Heather in overtaking Pavan/McBain and/or qualifying for the Olympics?

if you scroll down here fivb.12ndr.at/olympic-ranking/women you can see canada two at 500 pts average per event. Canada three are much lower down because they don’t have enough finishes just nine out of twelve needed. Their average is 491 so they are close to over taking them when they get their twelve finishes if they keep up this form. They will get a real bump on their average after this event. The key thing is keeping an eye on teams who haven’t got the finishes who will take those top 17 spots so canada one, sui one and germany two which will bump the teams down in qualifying. 18 is the magic number as world champs USA cheng/Hughes are world champs. Hope this helps.

Ittlinger/Borger in a good position to gain ground on LLLL, who dropped out of this event. Both teams are in Tepic next week, so the race for GER2 could get interesting.

That’s determined by best four finishes of 2024. A few weeks ago I thought Pavan/McBain were a near lock for the Olympics, but seeing the way both teams have played recently, combined with Canada’s NORCECA rules, I’d say Heather/Sophie are in a pretty good spot right now.

I have a thread listing each team's points using Top 10 finishes, which more realistically shows where each team is now that we are about 80% through the qualifying process of 17 months.
I will update that Thraed with Guadalajara included and you can see. The thread is Called Olympic Beach Volleyball Rankings, Women. It will be at the top of the first page tomorrow night.
Tbe short answer to your question is that Heather/Sophie are only about two 680 point finishes, not counting Guadalajara from passing Pavan/McBain, assuming Pavan/McBain don't also get some high finishes. This race will continue probably through the very last tournament, which is in Ostrava end of the first week of June.
But then there are other teams vying for position 18 in the ranking besides Pavan/McBain. ESP2 are ranked around #21 but are playing well and rising. ESP2 might get that 18th spot even if Heather/Sophie pass Pavan/McBain. Also FIN just passed CAN2 for spot 18, using Top 10 finishes by earning 600 points today.
But... there is, as ajm mentioned above, a back door into Paris. It is the NORCECA Olympic qualifyer held middle of June for teams not in the top 18, and not having two other Top 18 teams from their country. If heahter/sophie play that tournament, they would be about 90% sure of winning it, assuming both are healthy. I don't think Puerto Rico or Mexico would send a team that could realistically beat Sophie/Heather.

Thanks for all the answers team.
I usually come to this forum to read the crazies talk about volleyball... Every now and then a group of posters prove that there's more value than just that!

A moment of appreciation here for the creator of FIVB.12ndr.at Might not the the prettiest from a visual perspective, but it is the easiest and best way to have everything in one place, live results… I’m sure even the VW staff use it!

I didn't see the game yet, but Huberli tends to psych out in end-game situations.

Why is CAN3 (Bansley/Bukovec) not playing the Elite16 in MEX next week?
Do they need a break? Focus on the next Challenge-event at the end of the month for easier points?

They would’ve been on the reserve list, not likely to get in anyway. But they dropped out. Probably should’ve stayed in just in case.
