State Farm Women's College Volleyball Showcase Wisconsin vs. Texas | Sun., Sept. 1, 2024 11:30 AM Central | Fiserv Forum Milwaukee, Wisconsin
|
Follow AlongSeptember 1st is National Burnt Ends Day. Burnt ends are the crusty, fatty, flavorful meat cut from the point of a smoked beef brisket. Most commonly associated with Kansas City-style barbecue, KC burnt ends are usually served chopped and smothered in thick, sweet sauce derived from brown sugar, molasses, and tomatoes. The sauce is a feature of KC barbecue, and Kansas City is one of the four main BBQ regions in the US. By contrast, Central Texas barbecue is all about the meat, which is typically rubbed with only salt and black pepper, then cooked over indirect heat from pecan, post oak, or mesquite wood. Sauce is typically considered unnecessary, but it may be served on the side to complement the meat. Milwaukee, host of this weekend's tournament, has a varied culinary scene that features a variety of different styles of barbecue restaurants. Our Texas friends can get a taste of home at Heaven's Table Barbecue on North Avenue or at the Sweet Smoke Barbecue, a food truck that will be serving at Enlightened Brewing Company on Sunday afternoon. Those interested in a saucier experience can check out Speed Queen Bar-B-Que, less than a mile and a half from the Fiserv. Chef Jason Alston, owner of Heaven's TableAdam & Cindi Beilke, owners of Sweet Smoke BarbecueMama Betty Gillespie, who founded Speed Queen Bar-B-Que in 1956

BTW, an FYI, the interim starting lineup seems set, with Skinner/Wenaas, Ames/Singletary, Rutherford, Swindle, Halter, and Akana as the DS.
That said, Rutherford was in sweats on Saturday. Kahahawai replaced her in the lineup. Plenty of players saw playing time. No 6-2, but with Swindle and Carlson on the roster I guess it’s a possibility. Still, if you go with that starting lineup I think that’s your best bet, and then we’ll see what Elliott actually trots out there.

I'm just hoping we take a set.💔 This is starting to remind me of when everyone thought Minnesota was going to ‘drag’ Texas after the first weekend.

I'm just hoping we take a set.💔 Sometimes it’s hard to realize in the moment, but it really isn’t about the wins and losses right now. It’s about showing improvement. I know the result last night was not what Badger nation wanted to see, but let me tell you, it was light years better than what I saw out of Texas opening weekend last year. But all year long they kept getting a little better and then a little better, until they put it all together in the Elite Eight in Palo Alto. Same thing here. Just look for a little more cohesiveness, a little better passing, a little better setting. Plus you have a couple of players with likely lingering injuries. That’s a part of what affected Texas last year. Asjia O’Neal tweaked her leg, and it just seemed to take forever for her and Swindle to get on the same page. Like in the movie “What About Bob?” baby steps. Baby steps! And who knows? Maybe it’s you consoling me and repeating my words back at me after the match. There’s no guarantees about what Texas team we’ll see. Maybe they look like a rec team that’s never played together before. I don’t expect that, but I sure didn’t expect it last year, either. I do know wins and losses matter here, so I’m not trying to downplay the importance of the match. These are huge for regional host opportunities. But outside of that they honestly don’t matter as much as showing continual improvement.

Wisconsin showed moments of brilliance against Louisville but they ended up beating themselves with errors. Franklin was steady as always but it was Robinson who really shined. Smrek started out strong but fizzled towards the end, likely due to a minor injury she's nursing. Not having a second OH option was a huge weakness for the badgers. The badgers utilized the new 2 Libero system, a system that admittedly makes me feel like an old timer, but it seemed to work for them. Charlie seemed solid in her first ever college game, especially with only a month or so of practice under her belt. While there will be growing pains for her and the badgers I have no doubt she'll have an amazing career at Wisco. The glaring issues is at OH, if Orzol is back in the front or TSC figures it out between now and Saturday it could get ugly for the two time defending champions.
While Texas seems to have the edge I'm yet to be convinced on, admittedly, what little I've seen from them this spring. Rutherford has been less than ideal in the back row and Kahahawai seems to struggle with terminating. Swindle still struggles with her location, especially behind her. Carlson offers much needed improvement on the setting but she struggles on the block. It's unclear where Lauenstein will fit in to the picture as she's saw action on both the right and left pins against UTSA. Plus with Wenaas returning it makes things even more unclear for the former cornhusker. There's even been some talk of a redshirt in the Texas thread, even with it being speculation I can see how it's not an unlikely scenario.
All in all it should be a great game, one I'm definitely looking forward to watching. I don't see it being a sweep but I'm going to have to give the edge to the longhorns here. Best of luck to both teams!

I think it’ll be closer than people expect. I saw flashes of a good badger team.

Wisconsin fans freaking out over one 4 set loss in the first game of the season to a top 10 team lol (in their hometown). Y’all will be fine, Texas hasn’t even played a game and has had plenty of issues so far in preseason.

Y’all will be fine, Texas hasn’t even played a game and has had plenty of issues so far in preseason. I mean, I have and would be freaking out right there with them. As fans we build up all these expectations over the offseason of what we’re going to see. When reality comes crashing down on us it’s perfectly normal to react to it. Even over react. Been there done that multiple times. It’s tough to get too worried at any individual result in volleyball any more. After last year’s final result I’ve reached my complete zen state where whatever happens was supposed to happen. But check with me if Texas football plays horribly on Saturday. The level of overreaction I’m capable of will reach the megaton scale. I just think it’s a privilege of being a zealous fan. We’re allowed our overreactions!
