If Minnesota’s serve receive looks anything like it did yesterday, it won’t be close. You seem to be implying Wucherer isn’t going to serve receive about 50 times. I’m picking the likeliest name, but Texas is going to zero in on the outside hitter playing 6 rotations and make her feel like Scott Sterling. Without the facials. Z was aced 8 (!) times yesterday. The outsides will definitely be targeted, but why not home in on a bro who can’t pass?

Puts constant pressure on them. If it’s successful can take them mentally out of the match. Maybe that’s not what they do this time. But I do feel strongly they’re going to pick one player and hone in on them. Maybe it’s the libero.

It’s definitely a good strategy for a team like Wisconsin, which has a freshman/inexperienced setter and one primary offensive outlet. But for Minnesota, all of their pins are showed up well on offense yesterday. If Texas targets Wucherer only, that frees up Hanson on the pin/backrow. Add in that Grote, who doesn’t need to worry about passing, has been a more terminal opposite than Smrek so far, and the “target one person” strategy doesn’t yield as high of a result. Targeting Z gives a higher chance of not only an ace, but a poor pass, which limits Shaffmaster’s ability to distribute the offense efficiently.

Does anyone have the passing stats for Stanford/Minnesota yesterday?

JT you were behind one of the service lines right? Do you recall whether the Gophers were splitting the court pretty evenly in serve receive against Stanford? Did Z have a bigger chunk and/or seem to be attempting to poach serves aimed at our OHs and not doing so well? One of those things that’s hard to tell with the tv broadcast camera angle. I do remember a replay of one Stanford serve where Wucherer took a couple steps to cover a front row Hanson but ended up shanking it. Looked like the ball was going right at Hanson’s platform. Made me wonder how much passing responsibility Hanson has. She wasn’t passing when in the back row with Thibault either. Hanson seemed to be playing 6 rotations for her back row offense more than anything. She had more sets back there than Wucherer did.

Not up on VM yet for some reason They probably had to get a new set of coders after the first one gouged their eyes out like in Event Horizon.

I don't know too much about the inner workings of most teams, so I usually go to the NCAA stats page and try to infer what's going on.
There's talk about targeting in serve receive Wucherer since she's their best player and it's the strategy Texas likes to do. But then there's a counter discussion about why not target Z. So then I had to look up the Minny roster and check out who has "Z" and it's obvious that it's Zeynep Palabiyik (wow, no wonder they use Z).
And I see Z is a Libero and so far has had 37 RetAtt and 8 RErr. So that would mean in the game against Stanford she returned 78.4% of the time?
Hmmm, doesn't look good. Let's see how last year's team was:
Murr (Oh yeah, Ohio State transfer): 23/523 = 95.6% LandFair (must have been targeted ALOT, but now is at GBR): 78/866 = 91% Wucherer: 49/529 = 90.7% Z: 10/129 = 65.5%
It's only one game, but I see what y'all mean about targeting Z.
Did I interpret the stats correctly?
(I'm just a humble fan with no access to the all-important passing numbers)

I need "swiss" to post that, unfortunately, Texas will lose. And then all will be good. Minnesota is a much better team than Wisconsin right now. So I think that they will be a tough matchup for Texas.

Texas will blow out MN in 2 of the sets and 2 more sets will be competitive. 3-1 Texas wih Skinner having a monster match. I can certainly see this happening. However, Pedro is back and very evident with our two middles. They both put on a performance yesterday. We shall see how they stand up against Texas later today. I was very happy for both of them. Here's hoping their performance will continue into this match and the rest of the team can build on it. Is that Pedro’s specialty? Middle play?
