All-B1G freshman team Unanimous all-B1G sophomore and senior year AA second team senior year She was arguably one of the best freshman 6 rotation OHs in 2010. Great all around player. Acevedo might be the closest thing to this teams Wittman Wittman was Gatorade NPOY but not the #1 ranked player by prepvolleyball mag. If I recall correctly, she was #8. Oh great. Now I have to research all the #8 rated players that the Gophs have recruited to see if there's a pattern. Thank you very little... and, yes, I stand corrected.

In addition to Wucherer and Landfair, you could consider Tabi Love as unofficially a third #1 recruit--unofficial, because as a Canadian she wasn't eligible at the time to be ranked, but was probably the most hotly recruited player of her class.

What the rankings were before 2004, and of and from whom, I don't know.

A another great night for the Gopher serve Auburn was OOS most of the match
server SA SE MN Au TA win% Acevedo 4 1 13 5 23 74% Grote 3 1 8 5 17 65% Shaff 0 1 8 4 13 62% Hanson 0 0 5 4 9 56% Z 0 0 1 4 5 20% no pdf so hand counted
McGhie, after great serving vs TCU, was ineffective tonight and replaced by Crowl in 3rd set Some time in the gym practicing trajectories just over the top of the net must have happened On any number of serves I thought a serve wouldn't clear but they did! After Alex's performance I seriously doubt we'll see Wookie serving barring some miraculous turnaround in practice.
Quite a few dings re. Wookie on this thread. If Shaff never feeds Phoebe then Wookie will always be facing a wall. She had a couple of crosscourt kills with pace, but most of her kills were from off speed tips and roll shots. and she is not adept at offensive tips. Shaff rarely sets wider to give Wookie line attacks. I think sets that bring her inside could open seams in the block and offer more crosscourt potential.
I love to see a cross with Wookie coming further inside and Phoebe circling behind her.

Regularly double if not triple-block up. My husband and I both remarked to each other at the game last night how much more accurate Mel seems on sets to the outside. That said, she continues to majorly be on the struggle bus in regard to quick sets to the middle. Like, it's just not there. Year five? Come one. Literally Phoebe could not even reach the ball a couple of times. I don't get it. Yes, may be Mel's height, but cripes. So, agreed, that really makes it more difficult for McKenna. I'm not ready to write her off yet, and I imagine she's got to be frustrated. Hopefully she can remain steady and begin to contribute on a more consistent basis. I get why Keegan might be keeping her in the back row. It's tough to improve if you're not getting the chance in games. But wow, heading into B1G play, she is going to have a monstrous target on her back during serve receive. I'm not seeing much to suggest she should stay back there. I wonder if Keegan will ever pull her for that. I hope he considers it if she's doing poorly, but it seems to negatively affect her front-court play as well. I wanna be a believer so badly because she's got such enormous potential. But girl, you a junior. Time to step your you-know-what up.

My observation during McGhie’s serving rotation: Auburn had her number and tipped it to the middle of the court or right over the block every. Single. Time. And successfully. Until she can pickup on those tips, keep crowl in as serving sub. She’s got the length and her serve is pretty consistent as well.

I hope the Gopher players continue to have this much fun in the BIG season. Go Hanson. I loved the standing ovation for Acevedo; I hope she knew it was for her. LOOK OUT! The two littles were sooooo much fun and were all over the place. Minatee is quick and a joy.
I agree that Wucherer is and will forever be facing a wall. It should open up other hitters so Awoleye/Shaff need to get that middle going with plenty of Shaff dumps mixed in. The Hanson back court attack might help too. However Wucherer might have to get used to that double block since she was the top scorer last year. The opposition has scouted her. They know that she is Shaff's favorite target and that she hits mostly cross court. I liked Wucherer's tips last night; they were an effective way of dealing with block. I also observed that the tight sets were the most problematic. So Shaff, please set Wucherer a little off the net. All this IMO.

Two things I recall with Wittman:
1 - She didn't wear socks the first game I saw her play. I believe it was in the Diet Coke Classic her freshman year.
2 - Also, my fellow season ticket holder and I both felt that she was the "cleanup" OH for the Gophers. She could be counted on for a run of kills to get us back in a match.
IMO rankings mean nothing. Either you have the confidence/belief in one's self or you don't to put "the team on your shoulders" to win a match.

Loved watching Thibault and Z last night. They were all over, so fun to see their intensity and focus! Also it wasn't just our littles picking everything up, Shaffmaster and Hanson both had outstanding defensive nights and even Wurcherer, Acevado and Crowl picked up some big digs.
Wurcherer has great potential, she has such a heavy arm. But its also year 3 and she's still hitting straight into the block too often. Yes, some of it is the wall, but I'd like to see her work on her line shot and deep corner shots.

So, Wucherer is OH1, which means she is front row with the setter more than Hanson who is OH2. I don't know that Hanson at OH1 would be better than Wucherer but my guess is no. In practice, I would think Wucherer has been the best at OH1 which is why she is there now. We are still in preseason so there is time to make adjustments. Go Gophers. It’s funny to me how many people call the non conference the preseason. The gophers season has fully started. These matches count!
